The heartbreak of mixing colours in kinectic sand and play doh

Lighthearted of course Hmm

Does anyone else hate it when their child mixes the colours of play doh or kinetic sand?

I try so hard to keep them separate but now I have brown play doh and just one big random colour of sand. I should have 4-5 different colours and 4 different scents Sad

This irrationally bothers me too! Destroys my soul every time it happens

GeidiPrimes · 07/05/2021 13:24

Do you know, I've just bought some kinetic sand for me to play with, and that was my first thought - oh no, what if the colours get mashed together.

Ylvamoon · 07/05/2021 13:27

Yep, I spent hours hovering over my DC trying to stop the mixing. And still ended up with the gastly brown blobs!

MistyMinge2 · 07/05/2021 13:27

I hear you. It really grinds my gears too. Why can't they see it would be so much better if the colours remained separate?! 😔

HannaHat · 07/05/2021 13:29

God yes, it irrationally winds me up 😂

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 13:33

There’s some beautiful colours in the kinectic sand and some of the moulds you make the stuff with, you need to put different colours to make it look pretty..buuuuuuut you put two colours together it’s very hard to get them apart

Just repeat to yourself...
It's a toy. It's to play with. Don't stifle their creativity.

And then either cry quietly in the corner, or buy your own to make your own stuff and keep separate.

(It's good practice for the Lego years when they want to break up sets and build their own creations).

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 13:39

Yes crying quietly after it’s all tidy away is my go to

Oh god yes, I feel the same. DD is pretty good at keeping play doh apart but the bloody sand! Nightmare.

CervixSampler · 07/05/2021 13:46

Why can't they design it so that it doesn't mix together?

This is why I only let mine have one colour at once, I’m mean! I buy 2 tubs of the same colour so he has plenty to make things out of, they’re just a bit monochrome 🤷‍♀️

Noodledoodledoo · 07/05/2021 14:00

My method - we have playdough they can mix up (inevitable with a ice cream machine gadget unless I clean it out EVERY ice cream made!) and pots which are kept as the 'right' colour. Also I got the box of 18 mini pots of Playdough, so less to mix!

With kinetic sand we had the rainbow slicing set - one hit wonder instantly mixed, I then bought a big bag of just sand coloured!!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/05/2021 14:01

Ha ha! I so agree!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/05/2021 14:02

But yes of course I let Ds mix it and just cry silently to myself Grin

BlackRibboner · 07/05/2021 14:02

It's the fault of the boxes. Lovely pictures of toast, cake, flowers, animals etc. - all in one mould but somehow colours kept separate! It's a lie and I fall for it too many times

LolaNova · 07/05/2021 14:05

Yep. It looks quite pretty all mixed together initially but then it all just becomes one dull sludgy mess.

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 14:10

Yes!

Lies the lot of it

Ooooo look at this lovely cheesy cheese sandwich you can make you can make with your play doh. By the way.. once you’ve made it, you can’t unmake it. It remains a mess

Buy it! You’ll hate love it

We only have one colour of play dough because it's the homemade kind and I could only find one bottle of food colouring. My worst one though is paints and art supplies - I hate it when DD turns all the paint palettes murky brown and always have to tidy up the art materials nicely because goddamit I bought the good quality ones and I want them to last!

ShamrockHillz · 07/05/2021 14:12

Uh this drives me mad. Any play dough, clay, sand we have inevitably ends up brown or puke green. I hate it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/05/2021 14:13

I'm almost missing playdoh right now.
Preschool toys are so much simpler.

(Would it be odd to buy myself some playdoh? I'm only 34....)

LadyCatStark · 07/05/2021 14:14

I saw an advert for the toasty maker yesterday and thought it was a terrible idea. He is a device to squish your playdoh together even more so it’ll never come apart!

worriedatthemoment · 07/05/2021 14:15

I remember that well and toys put In the wrong box and iced cakes not done neatly.
Took a lot of inner strength to not put it right

RickJames · 07/05/2021 14:17

Aw, I'd give my right arm to be playing playdoh with a messy toddler right now Sad DS10 is out on his bike with his mates. Not helpful, sorry Grin

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 14:25

Mine aren’t toddlers anymore but the demons STILL enjoy mixing the colours Sad
