The heartbreak of mixing colours in kinectic sand and play doh

Lighthearted of course Hmm

Does anyone else hate it when their child mixes the colours of play doh or kinetic sand?

I try so hard to keep them separate but now I have brown play doh and just one big random colour of sand. I should have 4-5 different colours and 4 different scents Sad

We mix away in this house, I don’t think we have an original play doh colour anymore. I love play doh and send but the kids like oobleck best.

Chickenlickeninthepot · 07/05/2021 14:31

I don't mind too much about the playdoh mixing (though it drives DH nuts) but every bloody painting ends up brown because DS just loves mixing all the colours together.

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 14:32

What’s oobleck?

I recently was given a brand new play dough kit but it only had a few colours in it, and was horrified to see the instructions on how to make colours for certain things by mixing them!! The horror!

Biancadelrioisback · 07/05/2021 14:35

DS(4) often asks me to 'unmix' his playdoh and I have a little cry to myself...

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 14:35

Aaaaah cornstarch and water. Never knew it had a name

I haven’t actually done this with my dc yet. It’s always been a plan but never got to it. I might get some tomorrow now

You can make kinetic sand sooo easy!
I can't remember exact recipe for it !

A quick Google will show you then you can make ENDLESS amounts alot cheaper . Let them mix it as much as they like 😜 xx

SnowdaySewday · 07/05/2021 14:39

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

I'm almost missing playdoh right now. Preschool toys are so much simpler.

(Would it be odd to buy myself some playdoh? I'm only 34....)

Are your DC young enough for you to make conductive play dough?

My polling station was near the preschool - yesterday was the first time I’d been there during the school day in years. The smell of play dough wafting on the breeze. Thank you COVID that I had to queue...

shouldistop · 07/05/2021 14:39

Yeah I don't like it but I just go with it as ds loves mixing colours. Goes against my internal sense of order!

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 14:41

Yeah I’ve seen recipes for kinetic sand

I think it’s something like 1 cup sand, 1 cup baby oil or something like that

Sentences you only ever say once as a parent and never bother again :
"Let's try and keep the colours separate"

HowsYourHeadHun · 07/05/2021 14:43

My DS usually hides it somewhere for me to step on the dried up Play Doh, it really is as sharp as a knife once it's dried.
That or he's usually trying to sneak a piece to eat.. Grin.

He does mix them. But he is good he'll only pull out little bits to mix together Grin.

SnowdaySewday · 07/05/2021 14:44

Oobleck another name for gloop. Cornflour and water.

Amazing properties e.g. pours like water, if you push an object in gently it sinks, but hit the surface hard and it acts like a solid. Same principle as quick sand.

WickedQueen · 07/05/2021 14:55

My husband and I had a full blown argument over his encouragement of mixing colours. Anal, he called me. Anal.

HannaHat · 07/05/2021 14:59

He encouraged the mixing?

I used to be selective about which colours they could mix at once. E.g. orange, pink and yellow or blue and green.

That way, at least the resulting mix wasn't just brown.

Looking back I probably should have let them just mix the lot - the day we got rid of the playdoh was a happy one 🤣

StripyHorse · 07/05/2021 16:17

I should add - we got rid because they outgrew it. Now teen / pre-teen DCs.

Exhausted4ever · 07/05/2021 16:22

It drives me insane!!! And with the painting that ends up just brown!

Soubriquet · 07/05/2021 16:41

I don’t use paint too much here but it’s amazing how felt tips can still have a sludgey brown tint to it too

I mean..how?!

OP posts:
Riddo · 07/05/2021 17:08

I used to let the mindees colour mix but only in one palatte so we ended up with a blue/ green/ white mix and a red/orange/yellow mix!. It's quite a good compromise 🙂
