AIBU to ask you (kitchen related)

Sorry to post on AIBU but better traffic!
We are getting a kitchen refurb in the summer and panicking (and not being able to think!) about how to transport/store everything that is currently in the cupboards!
We have a spare room- so everything can possibly go in there but we don’t think carrying it up in cardboard boxes would be suitable- due to breakage - and wondering if anyone knows of what sort of “receptacles” we could use!
We don’t want to necessarily spend money on containers- would rather keep that for the kitchen refurb.
I’m sure people do this all the time and have more ideas than all we can think of (which is just cardboard boxes!) would really appreciate any ideas possible.

Your drawers you usually keep clothes in? Bag up the clothes!

Bags for life? Then into boxes. Repeat!

Oh good Lord- that would mean even more effort! Emptying the clothes.

We also have 12 cupboards and 8 drawers in the
kitchen- good idea though as I hadn’t even considered that we can just take out the kitchen drawers and move them straight up which is a fab idea! My head honestly doesn’t work about thinking that way so I really appreciate that idea- just 12 cupboards worth to think about now.

I would use the opportunity to have a clear out; probably will find lots can go to charity. Then put aside what you need for day to day; 4 plates, 4 mugs etc. Pack the rest in plastic storage boxes and hoick them upstairs. If you are anything like us, some stuff will never be missed and you can have a second cull on unpacking. I now only have stuff in my kitchen that we actually use.

Genuine question but why can't you use cardboard boxes?

That's what we always pack our kitchen stuff in to for moving house and never had any issues, I assumed most people did this?

Just wrap anything breakable in bubble wrap (can get cheap roll on Amazon) or newspaper.

Sorry if I've missed something, just not sure why that's not an option

Why do you need to store them in anything? Just take them up as-is and stack them in piles in the floor/bed.

Thanks all- I just thought cardboard boxes would end up breaking with heavy stuff like tins and crockery? Maybe not though!
The only times I’ve moved house before- we’ve have limited stuff but it seems that over the years (and with more cupboards to put things into!) we have built up quite a lot.
Defin a good idea to have a cull. I’m sure we don’t need half the crap we have. Good to know that cardboard boxes will hold out too (are you just talking about normal cardboard or the thick, reinforced stuff?)

We bought a load of plastic tote storage crates recently for a move £6 each but plan to sell them
on again once we are moved and unpacked

If we take everything up as is- I dread to think how many trips up and down we will need! With 12 cupboards- packed to the gills- it would probably take us a good 1-2 days to get everything up. Would be an absolute nightmare- I just want someone to come in and do it all for me! Hate stuff like this!

Cardboard boxes are fine so long as you tape up the bottoms with parcel tape, and don't throw them across the room

Run down as much foodstuff as you can, pack away the stuff you usw irregularly ahead of time so it's quick to move. Check out freecycle or Olio (very usable app) for boxes /packing material being given away.

Thanks for all advice- feel better now. I must sound like a complete knob but I honestly have a job where I make day to day decisions- as does my husband!
It’s just when it’s something new or unknown I become flummoxed and he generally follows my lead (so then he becomes flummoxed and we can’t see the Wood for the trees!)

We have never built up so much stuff before, so anytime we moved in the passed, the whole house contents fitted in the car!
We have now been in this house for so long I would worry that the contents of the bathroom cabinets wouldn’t even fit into the car!

Banana boxes make good boxes for moving kitchen paraphernalia.

I bought a load of £2.95 Fitty boxes from B&Q for the unwieldy heavy stuff.
I also used suitcases for the robust stuff like baking trays and chopping boards.
All utensils in jute shopping bags.

I used the Fitty boxes to organise garage afterwards.

Suitcases! Brilliant- another idea I hadn’t thought about- we have loads in the loft- thank you and we also have a good few banana boxes in the loft too.
It reasons like this I need to ask others- I just don’t think about things like this- I get fixated on one idea and can’t think of others.

If you're worried about structural integrity of the cardboard box then some big plastic storage boxes might be better with heavier items.

Just googled fitty boxes/ I think we are sorted now- a mix of all the above ideas and we’ll be grand.

Get a couple of supermarket deliveries with no bags. They pack everything in sturdy plastic boxes. Which they deliver to you. Then keep them

This made me smile. As a very, very long term online grocery shopper I go back to the days where they LEFT the crates. Every farmer, vet and gamekeeper round here has a boot full and garage full of tesco crates. That's what my house got stored into. Every time I tried to return them they did not want them.

Do you have to move it all upstairs? We just put ours in the next room. It was only for a couple of weeks.

That’s what I really want Tinty but mine always wait for the boxes to come back!
