Sorry to post on AIBU but better traffic!
We are getting a kitchen refurb in the summer and panicking (and not being able to think!) about how to transport/store everything that is currently in the cupboards!
We have a spare room- so everything can possibly go in there but we don’t think carrying it up in cardboard boxes would be suitable- due to breakage - and wondering if anyone knows of what sort of “receptacles” we could use!
We don’t want to necessarily spend money on containers- would rather keep that for the kitchen refurb.
I’m sure people do this all the time and have more ideas than all we can think of (which is just cardboard boxes!) would really appreciate any ideas possible.

@Rainybows790

Tell them that you have to quarantine then disinfect the boxes so they can’t have them back immediately Grin

Rainybows790 · 06/05/2021 21:33

Might actually try that! 😂 (or ask them really nicely!)

Surely it's only going to take a few days or a week. So things can go in the other rooms downstairs, or behind the sofa, or under the table, work out what you will eat whilst the work is done, leave out what is necessary - kettle, tea bags, tins of baked beans, few plates, cutlery etc

When I did my kitchen we used the big aldi bags for life - went in and bought about 20! Great for transporting cook books too

Rainybows790 · 06/05/2021 21:54

Thanks CCS- will defin get some!

Quincie- somewhere in the region of 4-6 weeks- getting everything ripped out though- new heating system, floor, electrics etc. Dreading it as I hate mess/clutter but it’ll be great when it’s finished!

Why cart everything upstairs? (and then down again!)

I would just stack everything in boxes in the dining room/lounge/hall.

Did this last year. Bags for life are your friend. Just the right size and weight. After a MASSIVE clearout. My new cupboards are bigger and are still full so not sure what happened there.

I dont think it will be that bad!

Admittedly our kitchen (& whole house) is super small but when it was refitted we just lived around piles of crap for 10 days. But it didnt involve any building work.

Are you buying new appliances? We used our dining table as a house for the kettle / microwave ect and about 3 plastic tubs full of food. The fridge was in the living room.

Erm we took upstairs a couple boxes -cardboard- of pots & pans & cupboard foods but really by the time we boxed stuff up there wasn't much to worry about!

The dishwasher & washing machine lived in the shed for a couple days turned off & that was hardest.

Just use this time to eat from your cupboards, bin out of date stuff, donate stuff that you clearly arent eating or going to eat & it will be much clearer and easier to deal with.

Im assuming you probably have a token junk drawer or 2. I would shove that all in a tub in the loft and never think of it again.

Good luck & enjoy your new kitchen

Thank you! Good advice that I’ll (try ) to follow- I hate throwing stuff out! I’m not very good at it but need to take the leap now!
Yes- getting new appliances- can keep the old ones in the living room for now on the kitchen table- good idea! Could also fill the table up with various boxes too.
Hadn’t even thought about the fridge- the current one is integrated so (I don’t think) can’t be kept elsewhere- hopefully it won’t be too long between the old one going and the new one being plumbed in!
