Who woulda thunk?!

Staying in, keeping schtum and being all mysterious doesn't work anymore, does it? Not in this day and age.

Also, it's time to earn and what better way, eh?

It's the RF equivalent of keeping up with The Sussexes Joneses

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2021 14:35

Meh.....if it gets the word out for their charities great. I'm sure any income generated from it will be handled just like the income taken from entry into Buck Pal. Etc

fiheka · 06/05/2021 14:36

Does this count in their list of public engagements?
So a quick update on a youtube channel?

Neighneigh · 06/05/2021 14:38

I think they've got a new pr & Comms person, someone I'm LinkedIn to liked a post from the person who said they were off to do the job. Would explain a different approach

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 06/05/2021 14:39

Didn't think this sort of commoner's approach would be approved by the RF but I suppose desperate times...

OP posts:
fiheka · 06/05/2021 14:42

They are incredibly anodyne anyway. So I can't see their youtube channel being any different. I suspect it will be full of shots of the kids playing, some general meaningless stuff about good work charities are doing that everyone would already support, and maybe some general meaningless stuff about mental health.

They don't use their positions to bring publicity to controversial causes like Diana did. Kate for example is supposed to care about young children and pre-school education. But who thinks that shouldn't happen? No one. Totally meaningless and the Royal Family equivalent of the old Miss World contestants who all said they loved small children and travel.

StoneofDestiny · 06/05/2021 14:46

Maybe they can use it to announce when they intend to do a proper job and to stop living off the back of taxpayers?

Sallyandsam · 06/05/2021 14:47

I think it’s a great way to showcase their charities.

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 06/05/2021 14:49

With possibly millions of views per video and possibly millions of subscribers, they've hit the millenial jackpot with this one without even trying. Could be how it was sold to the decision-makers.

This is now their regular job - the future King and Queen are Youtubers, so no one complain about them not having a job anymore. Genius!

OP posts:
fiheka · 06/05/2021 14:49

@Sallyandsam will be interesting to see if they do that in any meaningful way? For example, asking people to donate to specific charities.
Just saying this charity that works with young children is useless and does not help the charity at all.

Sallyandsam · 06/05/2021 15:35

@fiheka

I disagree that publicity alone for a charity is “useless”, I think it is enormously helpful for raising a charity’s profile. Royal visits to charities do not always make the national news/papers, although are often reported on locally.

If a charity is referenced on a royal YouTube video it will reach a much wider audience. More people will find out about the charity’s work, and interest and donations are more likely to follow. It does not need to include a specific request for a donation.

fiheka · 06/05/2021 15:41

@Sallyandsam Lots of people will assume a charity with Royal backing will have enough money already. You have to tell people a charity needs donations.
Awareness-raising is useful for a controversial charity. Diana's work with AIDS charities and on mines was a game-changer for those charities.
If they were focused on more controversial charities then yes this would be useful. But they do not do that.
Still it will help to keep them in the riches they are accustomed to and bump up their number of public engagements so making them look not so quite work shy as they clearly are.

cheezy · 06/05/2021 16:04

They are really pulling out the PR stops. They must be desperate behind the scenes.

What's the AIBU?

fiheka · 06/05/2021 16:17

The AIBU is - am I being AIBU to promote William and Kate's anodyne youtube channel?
Yes you are OP.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/05/2021 16:20

Agree with those upthread saying they need to focus on change with their reach. Find a cause that needs championing and bring about real change

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 06/05/2021 16:25

Haha! Promote them? Don't think so - they hardly need promotion. I'm just surprised. If anything, I'm surprised there's not been 100 threads on them already. I'm sure H&M would have pulled that many with hundreds of posters criticizing them for being attention seekers, had they been the ones to start a channel.

Been trying to post on the royal family board but the create post button gets stuck once I click on it.

I also hardly visit that forum because, believe it or not, I really don't care for any of them either way. But this is unexpected news to me.

OP posts:
fiheka · 06/05/2021 16:32

They do seem to be pulling out all the stops for pr. I guess some of the recent revelations do not cast them in a very good light.

motherloaded · 06/05/2021 16:35

They could not be more cringey if they tried these days!

fiheka · 06/05/2021 16:36

@motherloaded On that we agree Grin

My feelings are summed up by this picture.

I really think this is part of it. These days, hiding behind the great walls of palaces don't cut the mustard anymore.

And I think PW's "Be careful what you say now, they're filming..." at the beginning of the video, says more to me than he probably intended for it to mean.

I don't think they'll let it go straight to the main reason for the channel for now, it will be too obvious. It'll probably be a gradual process from 'it's all about the charities' to the well-scripted Q&As, AMAs and the real Show and Tells inorder to exonerate themselves.

DarceyDashwood · 06/05/2021 16:50

They’d be being remiss if they didn’t use YouTube as a means of communication.

fiheka · 06/05/2021 17:01

What I want to know is whether this counts as a public engagement? I suspect it does since a phone call does.
