Coffee on the new carpet

DevonBumpkin · 06/05/2021 09:06

We had a new carpet fitted yesterday in the hallway/stairs. I made a cup of coffee for DH and I yesterday and as I made my way into the living room he jumped off the sofa and screamed, scared the shit out of me and I dropped the coffee everywhere. Brilliant stain all over the new carpet. Now I want to hire a carpet cleaner today to get it off and DH is saying it’s a waste of time as we’re buying a new front door. AIBU to go and hire one anyway??

No. Not a waste of money if it works. I don’t know what works on coffee. Others will no doubt advise.

Shoxfordian · 06/05/2021 09:14

What’s the new front door got to do with it?

Melitza · 06/05/2021 09:16

Why did he scream?

wildeverose · 06/05/2021 09:18

Eh? What's the front door got to do with a carpet cleaner, and why did he scream?!

CuriousSeal · 06/05/2021 09:56

This is such a random post 😅

ShirleyPhallus · 06/05/2021 10:04

Do you live in the Sistine chapel?

sashh · 06/05/2021 10:17

Before you hire a cleaner boil the kettle and get some clean tea towels.

Pour the boiling water on the stain, leave for 30 seconds and blot with the towel, repeat as often as necessary.

Do not rub.

You are steaming the stain out.

This does work, the first time I saw someone do it was after a bottle of red wine had been spilled on a pale green carpet.

I've since got coke out of a cream carpet using this method.

BTW what does the door have to do with it.

EngelbertsRumpispink · 06/05/2021 10:20

Is that you, Sharon?

ImInStealthMode · 06/05/2021 10:31

Unless you're just going to leave the old door in the hallway covering the stain what does the new door have to do with it? And why on earth did he scream? So many questions....

SD1978 · 06/05/2021 10:32

Eh? Why did he scream, and what does the forthcoming new door have to do with the already laid carpet?!?!

Isthatyoucolinrobinson · 06/05/2021 10:36

I think he's thinking putting the door in will cause more mess so sort both out afterwards. I would not do that though.

PurBal · 06/05/2021 10:38

@sashh great tip!

If it's a single cup of coffee I think a carpet cleaner would be overkill. I spilt black coffee on my new carpet and it came up with a few squirts of the foam carpet cleaner in a bottle.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 10:43

Why did he scream?

get the stain out now... it will soak firther in and set if you don't

Blot it till it's a dry as you can get it

Rinse it with a squirt of washing up liquid or biological dtergent if it had milk and sugar in it, and a tablespoon of white vinegar in two cups of warm water.

  • wet a cloth and blot the stain towards its centre

Blot it again until it's as dry as you can get it.

I've even got redbush tea out of cream carpet using a similar technique.

DevonBumpkin · 06/05/2021 10:48

Sorry wasn’t clear, he’s talking about the cost of the new door and the cost of the carpet cleaner. He screamed on purpose to make me jump (he says he didn’t realise I was carrying drinks)

OP posts:
CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 10:55

He screamed on purpose to make me jump ???? A couple of questions:

  1. Why are you cleaning the carpet?
  2. Why are you still in the same house, relationship as him?
  3. Is he 6 years old?

He sounds, erm, tiresome?!?!

OhRene · 06/05/2021 11:04

@CuriousaboutSamphire you'd hate our house. Constant laughs like this from being silly. All 5 of us happily hiding around corners and jumping out. Even the cat does it. Just leaps out, legs splayed like a starfish, she slaps your leg with an un-clawed paw and runs away.

OhRene · 06/05/2021 11:06

And OP, just google all the tips and tricks for getting stains out of the carpet and make your DH try them. The messing about is one thing but the negative results? His shit to deal with. And if it fails, get the carpet cleaner! So what if the cost is coming from the new door fund. It needs sorted.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/05/2021 11:07

Constant laughs like this from being silly. All 5 of us happily hiding around corners and jumping out. You are right. I would hate that. I don't see it as amusing at all. I don't like m/any 'practical jokes' at all. Though I am not devoid of humour!

I suggest that you are also traumatising your cat!

user1471457751 · 06/05/2021 11:46

@OhRene I really hope you and your family at least have the sense to not do it to someone holding a hot mug of coffee. Someone could easily end up in a&e with burns

SatsumasOrClementines · 06/05/2021 11:53

So he just wants to live with the stain? Or is he doing anything about it?

If it were me and my DP I’d agree it was a big cost but that if we tried everything else and it didn’t work then we’d just have to spend the money. (And we’d both by trying to get the stain out.)

Horsemad · 06/05/2021 11:54

Screamed on purpose to make you jump? 🙄 Jeez, your husband is thick.

Anyway, I'd hire the carpet cleaning people & make HIM pay for it.

mainsfed · 06/05/2021 11:55

Why are you the one hiring a carpet cleaner when knobhead did this?

I think you need a thread in Relationships.

idontlikealdi · 06/05/2021 11:55

I'd get the local carpet cleaner man come round and sort it, if it's a stain and not the whole carpet probably be £50.

He sounds like a dick, he screamed, he should pay for it.

grumpygiraffe · 06/05/2021 11:58

YANBU. And from now on you should carry a cup of coffee all the time around the house, so when your husband next screams for no reason you can throw it into his stupid face.

FunnyWonder · 06/05/2021 12:05

@grumpygiraffe
GrinGrin That really made me laugh!
