Coffee on the new carpet

39 replies

We had a new carpet fitted yesterday in the hallway/stairs. I made a cup of coffee for DH and I yesterday and as I made my way into the living room he jumped off the sofa and screamed, scared the shit out of me and I dropped the coffee everywhere. Brilliant stain all over the new carpet. Now I want to hire a carpet cleaner today to get it off and DH is saying it’s a waste of time as we’re buying a new front door. AIBU to go and hire one anyway??

DD spilt a cup of coffee on the cream carpet of an AirBnB we were staying at (you can imagine my reaction!).

They had some Waitrose own-brand carpet cleaner spray in the cupboard and it got the whole lot out after about 3 days - I kept spraying/drying/hoovering and the stain cleared completely.

The longer you leave it, the worse the stain will get so you are right to book the carpet cleaning. Or just cover the stain with the new door. Also, make the screamer do any booking. Not your problem to fix.

Never mind carpet cleaners you should act immediately in this situation.

If you don't have any special carpet and upholstery shampoo in (and it is always worth having about the place for accidents) you can a decent job by putting a little water and a lot of washing up liquid in a bowl and beating till you get lots and lots of froth. Then sponge the froth (not the water) over the stain. Rub gently or just leave and then hoover up. I have got most stains out like this, including wine

Is that you, Sharon?

But yes this was my first thought!

You’ve made it in to the Mumsnet madness Twitter page hahah

Don't use hot water on it, heat sets stains. Get a clean, colour fast sponge, lots of cold water and paper towels. Blot at as much coffee up using paper towels as possible, then dampen stain - working from the outside in - with the sponge and cold water. Soak up using paper towels. Do not rub. Keep re-wetting and blotting from the outside in until stain has lifted. Use a carpet cleaner on anything remaining.

@CuriousaboutSamphire you sure about that?

Also, I suggest that you are also traumatising your cat!

As I said in my comment, the cat DOES it. She jumps out like a wee sneaky arse and mock attacks and repeats until you mock chase her right back. But thank you for your concern over my cat.
@OhRene I really hope you and your family at least have the sense to not do it to someone holding a hot mug of coffee. Someone could easily end up in a&e with burns
Well obviously.

Make sure any cleaner suits your carpet. I once put bleach cleaner (unknowingly) on a carpet with some wool in it. Ruined it.

Dr Beckman carpet cleaner is your friend and it's not expensive either. I always make sure there's some in my kitchen cupboard.

Which is why washing machines all use cold water - er...

TaraR2020 · 07/05/2021 14:01

@sashh
It depends on the stain to an extent but first line treatment for stains (especially on things like carpets) shouldn't include the application of heat.

Heat does set many stains.

Washing machines don't use hot water for the whole cycle.

This!! I spilt some Cat food on my beige coloured carpet but didn't realise until later on as I'd fed him whilst it was still dark. By the time I'd noticed it had already dried in and stained. Used the beckmans and it came up a treat. It comes with a brush attached too which helps work it into the stain. The other thing I do is use bio laundry liquid and water out of a boiled kettle to lift the stain out that way

Heat does set some stains.

And washing machines don't wash in hot water the entire time, and very few people use a boil wash cycle! I wash my clothes at 30-40 degrees, not at the temperature of a freshly-boiled kettle.
