AIBU To think that the vast majority of the 5% of top earners in the UK don't really post on MN

Top 5% of earners in the the UK earn 70k or more, but it seems that every 3rd poster on here earns way above that and beyond.

OP posts:
MildredPuppy · 05/05/2021 17:16

I think they do as 5% is still a lot of people.

Bluntness100 · 05/05/2021 17:17

I do and I do.

saraclara · 05/05/2021 17:19

Ha. After reading the two dishwashers thread, I was tempted to suggest that MN had a 'rich people's problems' branch!

But given the proportions involved, maybe the specialist branch should be the 'average income or below' branch!

AbsentmindedWoman · 05/05/2021 17:20

This, at a guess.

£70k only seems like a lot compared to the poverty wages that a lot of people are forced to manage on.

Salaries in the UK are laughably behind the cost of living.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/05/2021 17:21

I don’t really understand your point. Obviously the majority of high earners don’t post on here, why should they? Is your point that you disbelieve the people who say they do?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/05/2021 17:21

I do too, but I couldn’t say the majority post on the board. The majority of that group must be men!

YellowGlasses · 05/05/2021 17:21

5% of 66mil is still a lot of people. Besides, for many, it’s the household income rather than an individual.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/05/2021 17:21

I mean, disbelieve the people who say they earn that much.

Grin

And they have such stressful and high powered careers with massive pension pots. They can't take full maternity leave because it'll harm their promotion prospects or mess up their pensions.

Ooh and they all have cleaners.

Not sour grapes (honest!) it just sounds so ... exhausting.

CarlottaValdez · 05/05/2021 17:23

It’ll be more than 5% of mumsnet demographic though.

I have the cleaner to make it less exhausting! :D

BillMasen · 05/05/2021 17:26

Mn is a site where posts are usually well written, educated and intelligent (whether you agree with the opinions or not). Certainly compared to other sites out there so it’s not a surprise the “average” poster is educated and intelligent.

These often go hand in hand with higher earnings (not always I know) so I’d expect higher earners to be disproportionately represented here

Dinosauraddict · 05/05/2021 17:26

I have that salary and post a lot. Couldn't tell you what %age that puts me in though. Don't have the cleaner any more though - and gosh I need one!!

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 05/05/2021 17:27

There are a lot of fantasists and trolls on here. Both ones lying about their salary and ones posting about how £70k isn't a lot of money.

BillMasen · 05/05/2021 17:27

Clearly the well written and intelligent posts aren’t normally mine...

Eilethya · 05/05/2021 17:27

Here we go again. Jesus Christ.

But the cleaner can't do your actual job, can they? Unless you have amazing powers of delegation Smile

No, but it's one thing off of my plate so the cleaning isn't something that then has to get done on top of everything else (for either DH or me.)

Alconleigh · 05/05/2021 17:30

I earn that and don't post as much as I lurk, but I do the latter quite a lot. I don't have any of a massive pension pot, a cleaner or a particularly stressful job.

theAdventuresofMissBarbaraPym · 05/05/2021 17:30

Does anyone remember LeQueen, LaQueen?

VodselForDinner · 05/05/2021 17:32

I earn in excess of that. I don’t have many people in my close circle who work and earn less than that.

But I’m not in the UK so not sure how that impacts your stats.

I find the approach Brits have to salaries just crazy. It’s like a race to the bottom in terms of reverse snobbery.

TownTalkJewels · 05/05/2021 17:32

This is a pretty middle class site, and 70k is a pretty middle class wage. Middle class doesn’t mean ‘average wage’.

Why are you so surprised?
