To never go swimming? Or to the gym?

LudoBear · 04/05/2021 12:37

The last time I went swimming was on holiday in Spain 8 years ago. Before that would have been when I was at school aged 12 (33 now).

Never stepped foot inside a gym.

Anybody else never go swimming or to the gym?

You're an adult, you can do what you like. Why would that be unreasonable?

Exactly this, neither are in any way compulsory. Why would you think otherwise?
CaptainMyCaptain · 04/05/2021 12:39

What they said. I'm sure the majority of people don't.

nellly · 04/05/2021 12:50

I'm a bit confused why you think anyone else would care, I like both of those activities. I'm sure there are things you like that I don't.

LudoBear · 04/05/2021 12:52

It just seems like everyone goes to the gym. Seems to be the thing. Either gym, swimming or both.

Subeccoo · 04/05/2021 12:55

I do both of those. I don't know many people that do no exercise but doesn't have to be those things specifically. They happen to be two of my favourites, along query running.

Subeccoo · 04/05/2021 12:55

Oh but you anbu to not do them. Do what you like.

billybagpuss · 04/05/2021 12:58

Do you have dc, do you take them swimming? as I do think that is important for safety.

Anonmousse · 04/05/2021 13:01

I cant remember the last time I went to either. I wouldnt generally think it was worth commenting about though?

lazylinguist · 04/05/2021 13:07

You surely don't think the majority of adults swim and/or go to the gym though? I'd be astonished if a quarter of them did tbh. It's just that people who do so tend to mention it!
I don't belong to a gym, because it's too expensive and I'd rather be outside walking or running, or in my own house doing yoga. I do swim, but only occasionally, in lakes or the sea. I hate public swimming pools with a passion - disgusting, hot, damp, clammy, noisy, echoey places. Ugh.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 04/05/2021 13:09

I do swim because a) I don't enjoy it, b) I'm far too self conscious after weight loss and a csection to get in a swimming costume whether it be to tan by a pool or actually swim in it. So if you don't fancy it then don't worry about it!

I do genuinely like going to the gym but haven't been in 2 years. Partially because of a hectic home life and also lockdown. But I've never felt pressured to go to it as a result of friends or someone asking if I go. I'd love to go back. Just need to see if I can get there in the evenings once daughter goes to sleep. But again, why does it matter if you've been or not u less you're the one who really wants to go?

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 04/05/2021 13:09

That should have said I don't swim! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 04/05/2021 13:12

I’ve only been properly swimming as an adult once about 6 years ago and it was a hideous experience. It was the first time I’d been in about 10 years and I had a panic attack, the lifeguard had to come ask if I was ok after witnessing my rather frenzied swimming. I’ve never been a confident swimmer at all, I only learnt aged 10 and it was only because I was forced to with school. Deep water just terrifies me. I go swimming with my DC or at least I did pre-covid but never do any actual swimming, just Bob around holding my toddler...

Only went to the gym a few times as a teenager, didn’t like it so never bothered again. I walk a lot and used to do HIIT workouts on YouTube and go running when I was mega fit.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 04/05/2021 13:18

I don't know anyone who goes swimming regularly

queenMab99 · 04/05/2021 13:22

I haven't been swimming for years, I am not keen on swimmimg in swimming baths but would like to swim in rivers and lakes, I walk for exercise, but I this is becoming very hard due to rheumatoid arthritis, which I have managed quite well for 30 years, I am also overweight, so need to do some kind of exercise. I recently spotted some tankini and swimming shorts sets, which I could bear to be seen wearing in public, and this has inspired me, I may start a aquarobics class when things open up more after covid.

Taikoo · 04/05/2021 13:23

I never go to a gym ever and swim less than once a year.

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2021 13:26

@LudoBear your thread about showering from yesterday is still going strong. Surely going to the gym/swimming would be an issue? Sad

I don't go to the gym or swimming. I hate swimming and was so glad when the DC were old enough for me to sit in the cafe with a cuppa and cake and wave at them every now and again.

RickJames · 04/05/2021 13:31

I hate running so I never do it (outside of emergencies) I am genuinely puzzled as to why so many people do it and I can't believe they actually enjoy it!

I like other sports, go to the gym and I loooooove swimming, go twice a week when it's open.

We are all slightly different, thank goodness Smile

To be honest I think it’s more that some gym fanatics LOVE to tell people frequently about their trips to the gym, which is why you probably think you hear about people going a lot.
Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2021 13:37

Are the gyms back open? (England)

BelleBlueBell · 04/05/2021 13:50

@Sparklingbrook

Gyms have been open since 12th April in England
Allthereindeersaregirls · 04/05/2021 13:52

I only swim on holiday (or a quick dip in a river). I never go to the gym.

Voomster953 · 04/05/2021 14:26

Is there a new craze on here for competitive gym avoidance? Sometimes threads like this appear to look down on that those who do exercise. So strange.

Jekere6 · 04/05/2021 14:27

I don't have a gym or pool near me, so don't go to one. But I've recently started buying gym equipment for the garage, I'd like to be able to run indoors instead of in the hail like this morning!

Sparklingbrook · 04/05/2021 14:28

Have they @BelleBlueBell? I hadn’t even noticed. Suppose it was the same date as swimming pools then.
