To sometimes hate grammar pedants ***message edited by a MNHQ pedant***

There are people pouring out their troubles and woes to have someone come along and say
“Actually OP. Yabu. Because it’s I went to the store not I gone to the store. “

They add nothing to the conversation but just strong arm their grammar into a thread where it isn’t needed

Do you mean pedants, OP?

Sorry, had to be done Grin.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:10

Bollocks. Fucking autocorrect Grin

OP posts:
LimeCoconut · 01/05/2021 14:10

Please tell me the title was deliberate 😂

Gemma2019 · 01/05/2021 14:10

I hate them too - much prefer grammar bracelets

BIWI · 01/05/2021 14:11
Grin
BIWI · 01/05/2021 14:11

First rule of pedants' corner ... !

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:12

Oh you fuckers

I’m going to get post after post like this now aren’t I? Grin

OP posts:
ThePlantsitter · 01/05/2021 14:12

I think you split an infinitive in your title there too, tsk tsk.

SwanShaped · 01/05/2021 14:13

Amazing! I assumed it was deliberate.

stackemhigh · 01/05/2021 14:13

YANBU. It’s so smug and superior.

I’d get your titled corrected as it’s all that everyone will focus on now.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:14

Yes...I think I ought to

OP posts:
Namechangedforthistoday · 01/05/2021 14:14

What happens in pendants corner stays in pendants corner. 😂

JackieLavertysWeirdVoice · 01/05/2021 14:15

A split infinitive klaxon has probably gone off somewhere as well Grin

OP, I do take your point. I also raise an eyebrow at the cases where posters pour their hearts out, and someone questions whether they were technically breaching covid guidelines.

And I hate autocorrect.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:15

But it never does!! It spills over to all threads ignores the wrong word

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 01/05/2021 14:17

YANBU, although MNHQ do delete the grammar wankers posts if you report them.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:18

As they should because sometimes the posts are very hurtful

There are people on here who have dyslexia, or speak English as a second language. They don’t need their grammar pulling up

OP posts:
Raskolnikov84 · 01/05/2021 14:19

Just tell them it was a deliberate mistake, and having spotted it, they are now the proud recipients of today's "Pillock Pedant" award.

Soubriquet · 01/05/2021 14:20

MNHQ should do an emoji just for that Grin

OP posts:
CyranosBestie · 01/05/2021 14:23

I hate this too. People are so quick to judge and be smug. Maybe the person has dyslexia or some other condition that means they struggle with spelling and grammar. The criticism says more about the person criticising than the person they are mocking.

CandyLeBonBon · 01/05/2021 14:24

You had to boldly go there didn't you op?

Tbh there are loads of SPAG issues on here that give me the rage, and I have to fight the urge to correct them, but mostly bite my tongue / but there are some which really need pointing out IMO.

Could of instead of could have, for example.

I presume people use the former because they are writing phonetically but it drives me mad nonetheless.

Spelling errors generally should be easier to avoid these days due to spellcheck everywhere. I'm talking about in the wider world, not just MN. If errors don't get corrected, how does anyone ever learn?

And don't even get me started on 'Reign it in' My boss wrote that the other day in an email and she's a copywriter!!! Confused

Planttrees · 01/05/2021 14:24

Too funny Grin

SquirrelFan · 01/05/2021 14:25

I am a proud grammar pedant, so I would love a grammar pendant! Something lovely in silver... my birthday's coming up...

BlusteryLake · 01/05/2021 14:26

I agree OP, pedantry has its place but that place isn't on a post where someone is asking for advice. I would correct a work colleague on a professional document, ditto for my (teenage) children's essays, but it totally derails a thread on here. It's also very insensitive to make someone who may not have had the educational opportunities and support that the pedants have feel inferior at a time when they are seeking advice and support.

WorraLiberty · 01/05/2021 14:27

Exactly this ^^

There will also be people who didn't receive a particularly good education for one reason or another.

They don't need the MN wannabe teachers circling their threads, ready to swoop down and 'help' them.
