To sometimes hate grammar pedants ***message edited by a MNHQ pedant***

There are people pouring out their troubles and woes to have someone come along and say
“Actually OP. Yabu. Because it’s I went to the store not I gone to the store. “

They add nothing to the conversation but just strong arm their grammar into a thread where it isn’t needed

@Handsnotwands

There’s a time and place for pedantry. That said being able to communicate clearly and effectively is an essential skill. And if no one is ever corrected then they’ll not know how to do that.
But communicating clearly and effectively is not just a question of grammar.

My MIL, who is extremely fond of correcting people, doesn't actually know how to converse in a way that does not come over as humorless and patronizing. Communicating is also about LISTENING attentively and with empathy, something she has apparently never learnt.

Someone who buts in with "You've made a mistake" on a frequent basis is not a good communicator!

In fact, sometimes the person has actually not made a mistake. They have simply used a regional variation. Or have made an allusion to a TV programme or a literary character. Or are being ironic. MIL doesn't get this.

(For those who are wondering, yes, she is almost certainly on the spectrum and so, in one regard, this is not her fault. If a child or young person nowadays showed the extent of difficulties that my MIL shows, they would be referred for specialist help. )
