Aibu in believing most of what they're saying?

Just deleted Instagram, tiktok and turned notifications off on Facebook.

Will keep mumsnet because I don't think they use the same algorithm model etc

Wait, what have I missed?

@Sparklfairy

Wait, what have I missed?

Netflix doc about how manipulative social media is.

Basically I'm not worried about it, I just don't really want to be sold off to advertisers. Essentially I don't want to be their product!

Of course - add that to the current censorship, to the Bill hates global plan..... it all adds up!
Suddenly we live in a dystopian world that most people aren’t even aware they’re trapped in!

I've seen the change in my wider family. Conspiracy theories, political divisions and the bile and hate.

Thanks for reminding me of the social media boycott by sports teams. Will now log off in solidarity.

I turned off ALL notifications on all sm and it made massive difference, I am logged into like 5 accounts sometimes at the same time so that was insane amount of notifications.
I use it for work so can't just delete and tbh wouldn't want to. I am, however, quite strict when it comes to my personal ones, on my privacy settings, who gets invited/accepted and I am quite immune to adverts. I also don't follow any influencers or politics. It's all ducks and plants lol.

Basically a horrible customer for them on the personal accounts😂

I have to admit though that I was quite surprised at how much people were surprised. It's free to use. Obviously they will want something. Like data

None of this is new, surely? I remember hearing ‘If you’re not being charged then you’re being sold’ many years ago.

I'm not saying it's new.

My op was actually questioning if that doc can be believed

I didn't mena you personally with the surprise, just general @owlpicture

I took charge of it as much as I can because I made it into nice happy place with artists, local businesses, plants, ducks and things like that.
They already had the data, so meh. Plus I have Alexa🙈 And google. I am sure all of them knowore about me than I do.
Now they also know I am fond of pictures of dogs catching treats. 🙈

Surely the fact that social media providers make so much money proves that yes, they are selling their users very successfully indeed.

It's called "The Social Dilemma"

It has been around a while, and yes "none of this is new" exactly, but it's the best explanation I have seen about why it matters and explains some of the complex technical stuff very well. It's well worth a watch as a family tbh.
