Aibu in believing most of what they're saying?

Just deleted Instagram, tiktok and turned notifications off on Facebook.

Will keep mumsnet because I don't think they use the same algorithm model etc

Like Mumsnet?

Well the users created the content which draws in other users & advertising. The more users, the more adverts, the more £££

This is all very, very old news.

Anyone with half a brain who has been paying attention for the past decade should be very well aware that social media isn’t free, that the user is the product and that targeted advertising based on users’ personal data is how the companies make profits.

Which is why I don’t use or engage with social media.

It’s a bit more nuanced than TSD states but ultimately yes - but I’ve known for years how much ‘they’ know /how we’re watched in public etc and choose to carry on as I am.

Am bizarrely proud though that if I go to see what ads I’ve responded to on IG/what they think I want to see, it’s empty. They have no idea how to place me so you can ‘game’ the system too.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 30/04/2021 16:20

I am massively disappointing with the targeted advertising on instagram tbh.
It hasn't showed me a single duck for sale or some weird cooking equipment. Full of Shein (i had to google it lol), them "eco" products and some other non interesting thing to me.

2*, they gained 2 because it also shows me plant watering app advert and as plant serial killer, that's something when I can't decide whether they are trying to help or laugh at me😂

I watched this a few months ago and haven't been back on SM since. It was a good excuse to disengage with it as i was finding that i dislike or disagree with many aspects of it anyway. Haven't missed it at all, although it is when I found mumsnet Grin

Social media advertising is my day job, please don’t leave the sites 😂

Also, there’s much more too it than the docu shows & you do have far more control & ability to opt out than you ever used to.

My MN account isn’t linked to my real identity. It was set up using a throwaway e-mail address created & used for that purpose only on a PAYG burner phone.
