To think an iPad is basically the same as a fire kindle?

I want to get a tablet for my son but he is very clumsy and will damage it

I don't want to spend a bomb on an iPad

Is the kindle fire basically the same?

It depends what he would actually want to use it for I think. You can compare exact specs online to check.

I'd recommend a high quality robust toddler proof tablet case for whatever you pick though. 😊

Ostryga · 28/04/2021 11:27

The fire is great for kids (how old is he?) but doesn’t support the YouTube kids app which is annoying. It’s also very slow and if he’s not using it for the games it’s not great for streaming or using the internet.

A reconditioned IPad from eBay is a great way to go if he’s older.

stylemeplease · 28/04/2021 11:31

He is going to be 5,

I want to use it for learning apps and watching I guess Netflix or prime?

Oh I don't want it to be really slow. It will frustrate him and he will throw it on the floor 🙃

Will look for a comparison chart that's a good tip, thank you

A fire and ipad are incomparable.

My 4 year old twins have a fire each that we got when they were 3 for a flight. We use it occasionally to keep them awake in the car.

They are slow.... Fine for watching TV on or the occasional kids game like alphablocks, but very slow.

Would be absolutely fine for a 5 year old.

Nightbear · 28/04/2021 11:35

I love iPads but there’s no way in hell I’d buy one for a 5 year old.

DynamoKev · 28/04/2021 11:36

Doesn't have to be a choice between iPad or Kindle Fire.
DD now has a Galaxy tablet (cheaper than an iPad) after years of using her Kindle Fire that she got when she was 6.

Isittimenow · 28/04/2021 11:36

Definitely not the same but the Kindle is fine for a child that age.

greenjojocat · 28/04/2021 11:37

We use a galaxy tablet for the children, was around £100 and it works perfectly well

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 28/04/2021 11:37

iPads for grown ups, Fire for children in my house. The fire is slower and not as intuitive to use but basically indestructible in the kidproof case.

Pavlova31 · 28/04/2021 11:45

I use a Huawei Mediapad tablet.
Fast working and fine for Netflix ,Prime and Youtube.
You can by a rugged protector case from Amazon.

Pavlova31 · 28/04/2021 11:47
  • buy
swimlittlefishy · 28/04/2021 11:48

If he's clumsy AND will actively throw it on the floor....maybe just don't ut him expensive, fragile, technology that he doesn't need anyway?

swimlittlefishy · 28/04/2021 11:49

by him

swimlittlefishy · 28/04/2021 11:49

BUY. Fuck me.

wizzywig · 28/04/2021 11:49

And get the amazon insurance for the inevitable cracked screen

TheGumption · 28/04/2021 11:50

The Fires are horrendous once you've tried an iPad. Soooo laggy and slow and unresponsive.
But my 3 year old gets on fine with it for small things like phonics games or cbeebies playtime etc. The older DC have iPads and they're worlds apart. Much better for bigger games.

NotMeNoNo · 28/04/2021 11:51

You can get super rugged cases for Ipads with a screen protector built in, my autistic DS has one.

If you get a cheaper Android tablet it will probably be fine but still get a good case.
Also look at Morgan computers for deals on previous model Ipads.

(this kind of thing)

waitingonmykitten · 28/04/2021 11:51

We started off with a kindle fire for our 4 year old but it was slow and there were a lot less apps to choose from. We upgraded to an iPad quite quickly and feel like it was worth the extra money. We have a very sturdy case and screen protector.

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 28/04/2021 11:55

I have a 6 year old who has a fire and it is perfect for Netflix, prime, the age appropriate games and apps and books (the parental controls are solid on the fire - it is very safe - she has no access to the browsers - just what I allow onto her side).

I have an iPad which I let her use procreate on and chatterpix (not available on fire). But for day to day use a fire is fine at that age imo.

PugInTheHouse · 28/04/2021 11:58

We alway got Samsung Galaxys for the kids at that age, get a decent case (including front protection) and it'll be fine. I have had a kindle fire myself and to be honest it wasn't as good as the Samsungs, it is probably fine for a 5 year old though.

I am not a massive fan of ipads, they are overpriced compared to other tablets (as are pretty much all apple products)

Crappyfridays7 · 28/04/2021 11:59

When my kids were small they didn’t have their own iPads they used mine/more of a family thing than anything really. It also had a big rubber protective case on it. So they got timed sessions to do what they wanted and we also used it for audible/guided meditation or music.

However now they are older they have their own. Which they look after because they okie they are expensive. All content is monitored by me history etc. And they have set times to use them. Could you get an iPad mini? My middle son son used that for years then the phone/x box took over from it but he liked it.

user1493494961 · 28/04/2021 12:08

If he's likely to throw it on the floor I wouldn't buy either of them.

SemiFeralDalek · 28/04/2021 12:08

I found the amazon fire 7s to be awful. Tried two different ones and they were both rubbish. We've got a 10inch Samsung one now and it's awesome. It had a proper screen protector and a tough case on.

stylemeplease · 28/04/2021 12:09

I think I will get him the fire then

I didn't ask if I should buy one.

I will get him the case too.

Thank you very much for the helpful advice

No it's not at all.

My kids had Fires they were a pain in the arse, awful to navigate the parental controls, screen is shit. Silk Browser - awful. Put controls on and they can't access anything.

I spent more time trying to sort them out than using them.

I would go to CEX and buy a cheap reconditioned Ipad rather than Fires if I was doing it again.
