I want to get a tablet for my son but he is very clumsy and will damage it

I don't want to spend a bomb on an iPad

Is the kindle fire basically the same?

My children used their Fires for their home schooling. They weren't the only ones.

They use them to watch iPlayer as well.

SeaTurtles92 · 28/04/2021 13:55

Oh no, they aren't the same.

That's like comparing an android phone to an iPhone.

I'd always go for the iPad just because I prefer apple over other brands.

NursieBernard · 28/04/2021 13:55

They are definitely not comparable, the Kindle fire is slow and glitchy.

spittycup · 28/04/2021 13:56

Kindles are crap for adults but ideal for kids. Wouldn't buy an iPad for a kid under 13

Jazzybeats · 28/04/2021 14:42

Not comparable. The kindle kids is amazing for kids (not good for adults). You get all the apps games etc free too for the first year. Plus Amazon will replace it if the kids break it in first 2 years.

The iPad is a productivity device and too much for a 5 year old.

averythinline · 28/04/2021 14:51

Kindle fire 10 the new version is on offer at the moment.. its much faster than the old one which was slow...I pads are a lot lot more money but are easier to use...depends how much you want to spend...we got a 2nd hand ipad which was great..think it was music magpie or somewhere like that

hedgehogger1 · 28/04/2021 17:16

Be careful I got a fire for learning apps etc. Loads of them are not compatible

Jumpers268 · 28/04/2021 17:25

We used to have a Kindle Fire and then got him an iPad (due to home schooling etc). Honestly there's no comparison between the two. The Fire was slow, not a huge choice in apps and the battery was shit. BUT there's a massive difference in price! We got a shock proof case for his iPad and also a screen protector AND insurance.

Jumpers268 · 28/04/2021 17:27

I should add, my son is 6.

zingally · 28/04/2021 17:45

The kindle is fine for a child, but as soon as they get their hands on an ipad, they won't want to go back!

Lovethewater · 28/04/2021 20:28

When we bought the children's kindle fire it came with a 2 year no quibble guarantee. We had it replaced brand new just a month before the guarantee expired after our child was sick on it and it wouldn't turn back on.

ImInStealthMode · 28/04/2021 20:39

No 5 year needs a several hundred pound ipad!!

The Kindle Fire Kids tablet comes with a 2 year guarantee; if it breaks they'll replace it no questions asked. Sounds ideal if he's likely to throw it on the floor Confused

ImInStealthMode · 28/04/2021 20:40

x-post!

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 28/04/2021 20:40

A fire is fine for a 5 year old but there is a reason one is £50 and one is £400

Alleycat02 · 28/04/2021 20:45

I got a kindle Fire for my boys and it's absolutely fine, besides not having bastard sodding kids YouTube which is the main thing my eldest wants.... So he uses my crappy old Samsung Galaxy tablet for that and the Fire for all the games / apps that are included!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 28/04/2021 21:38

Ours have iPads, but for goodness sake make sure you get Apple care with it!

Our 5 year old wouldn't dream of throwing/dropping an iPad though. If yours would then maybe anything else would be better. Or they're too young for one, if throwing is an option!

Itsmeeloise · 28/04/2021 21:48

You can get a really good Android for £100. ! Really don't bother with the fire

Caplin · 28/04/2021 21:55

My kids have the Fire 10 and we pay the monthly fee for kids which is unlimited games, books etc. You can set content to be age appropriate which I like. I have added Minecraft and Roblox to their accounts (11 and 8).

But there is no doubt they are more tricky to set up and less intuitive. But they stream Disney + and Netflix, you can download a couple of movies onto memory cards. Only thing to watch is be gentle with the charging port. If you damage the pins you need to replace the whole thing. On another device you could just replace a part.

That said, they are cheap, especially on amazon prime day.

I disagree with that point, Dd2 (6) has a kids fire 8 and will use my ipad for drawing on procreate and chatterpix, which they also use at school but she loves her tablet and the games and books she has.
Hankunamatata · 04/05/2021 19:57

Mine all have iPads. John lewis do a great accident insurance and we spent money on good quality armour cases. The one that's got broken was my rather clumsy 12 yr old. He managed to break 2 in a year by just being clumsy 🤦‍♀️

Hankunamatata · 04/05/2021 19:58

Plus they use ipads for homework apps like seesaw and googleclassroom. Minecraft app works well.

ginghamstarfish · 04/05/2021 20:00

Can't imagine paying iPad prices for a child to play with! Android tablets are surely perfectly fine for kids.

RandomLondoner · 04/05/2021 20:15

For 95% of uses, an Android tablet will be as good as an ipad and a fraction of the price.

Having said that, I only use a tablet for one app, "Simply Piano", and although at the time I bought my android tablet the app worked more or less equally on both, the new beta features in the ipad version are so superior that I'm having to buy an ipad now.

To put in context how expensive ipads are, a five-year-old one with a physically smaller screen is costing me more than my Huawei mediapad cost new. (For any other app, the Huawei is better because of the bigger screen.)
