AIBU?
To be a bit peed off next door neighbour has painted the trellis above the garden fence?

We only moved into this house 8 months ago so this is our first summer here. The fence is 5ft heigh with garden trellis above taking it to about 6ft.
I've been pondering what colour to paint our side of the fence, it's currently a faded orange and needs doing again. I was thinking about either pale grey or cream.
Yesterday (when we were out) without even mentioning it to us my next door neighbour removed all the trellis and put a fresh coat of orange fence paint on both sides of the trellis so now it seems I'm stuck with the orange fence unless I want an argument (we've been told these neighbours can be v difficult). Am I being unreasonable to be a bit pissed off about it and should I paint the fence and trellis the colour I really want or just put up with it as it is?

In the name of neighbourly relations, they might have spoken to you. But if they own the fence, they can do as they like. I’d get one that’s the same size and paint it the colour I want, or go over and ask them if it’s ok for you to paint your side whatever colour you want
I think you’re pretty unreasonable to be annoyed at them when 1, the fence was already orange when you moved in and 2, you’re annoyed at them from someone else telling you that they’re unreasonable, not by going to speak to them directly

YANBU. Irrelevant who owns the fence, you can paint your side whatever colour you want. It is gonna be tricky to paint a trellis a different colour both sides though, presumably why your neighbour took it down to paint it, to protect the wood.
If you are skilled and careful it should be fine. I'd make a bags of it despite best efforts.

I think as others say it depends who owns the fence? When you bought the house there should have been an indication as to which side of the garden boundary you're responsible for and which is your neighbour's. (eg for us our neighbour is responsible for the fence running along the left side of the boundary and we are for the right). You're not unreasonable to dislike the colour and could always ask if they'd mind you carefully painting the side that's facing your garden but if it's their boundary you might have no choice! 🤦🏻♀️

We own the fence and trellis one side but their garden is bigger than ours so they own the fence and trellis at the bottom of our garden. It's a complicated set up 😂. Can't really put more trellis up as the trellis is thick and sits on top of the fence.
I'm sure if we paint our side of the trellis and the different colour ran through the gaps and down their side of the fence they would not be happy and would pick a argument, they're very fussy. I really don't like the orange but at the same time I'm not sure it's worth the arguments it's bound to cause

You can't paint someone else's property whatever colour you want 🙄
You will need to put your own one up if you don't like the colour they've chosen for their fence

No you cannot
It is criminal damage though the police won't get involved.
If you are lucky because the fence is a few years old they will have a go at you and not do anything but neighbourly relations will be strained.
If the fence was newly put up they can ask you to pay for it to be repainted up to a replacement, and take you to the small claims court if you refuse.

Surely it's an unwritten rule that you can't just decide what colour your neighbours side of the fence is, even if you do own it.
They should have asked if you liked that colour and if not at least given you the chance to paint your side with a colour of your choice at your expense?
It might be legally theirs but the colour your side doesn't effect them at all so why be so bloody minded about painting it "their" colour.

Have they painted your bit of the fence and trellis?
If yes, I would speak to them and say as they have painted your fence, you will paint your side of their fence to a colour of your choosing.
Get it in writing. If they refuse paint the trellis you own on both sides and leaves the trellis they own.
