AIBU?

To be a bit peed off next door neighbour has painted the trellis above the garden fence?

We only moved into this house 8 months ago so this is our first summer here. The fence is 5ft heigh with garden trellis above taking it to about 6ft.

I've been pondering what colour to paint our side of the fence, it's currently a faded orange and needs doing again. I was thinking about either pale grey or cream.

Yesterday (when we were out) without even mentioning it to us my next door neighbour removed all the trellis and put a fresh coat of orange fence paint on both sides of the trellis so now it seems I'm stuck with the orange fence unless I want an argument (we've been told these neighbours can be v difficult). Am I being unreasonable to be a bit pissed off about it and should I paint the fence and trellis the colour I really want or just put up with it as it is?

It might seem rude, but I don't think you should take a fence.

@PinkCookie11

Just paint your side what colour you want!
It’s on your side aswell so do what you wish with your side

Very bad advice.

Much better to ask the neighbour politely if they would mind if you paint your side a different colour. Failing that, put something else up in front of it within your garden.

@44PumpLane

If its their trellis they can do what they like.... Stick some trellis up on your side and paint it whatever colour you like perhaps

Exactly what I’d do
Painting trellis is difficult if different colours

People need to read up on the what is legal and what isn't because some neighbours will and have taken their neighbours to court

And you need to RTFT! OP owns part of the fence.[/quote]
And what part of my post refers to OP, I wrote that there is some bad advice and then provided what the correct advice is.

I know OP says they own part of the fence therefore its clear what she is or isn't allowed to do when the bits she owns vs what she doesn't.

So why dont you read my post properly as it covers both scenarios which is what OP has

Just go round and say, hey thanks for painting the trellis but we were actually going to paint the fences and trellis our side a different colour, would you mind? Make sure it doesn't run and I'm sure it won't be a problem.

hellcatspangle · 19/04/2021 16:49

Maybe put some willow up your side?

lighteincastlewindow · 19/04/2021 16:51

Maybe he thought he was being helpful, protecting the wood from rot?

Billandben444 · 19/04/2021 17:09

I don't think he's painted it orange but applied a wood preservative so may have thought he was doing you a favour to stop your fence and trellis rotting.

Reminds me about a post I saw on another fence thread that had me Shock

We were in the same position op. Our fence. We painted our side grey. Ndn painted her side brown. We had a solicitor instruct her not to touch our property.. She legally had to allow us onto her property to maintain the fence. I went round and painted it grey.

Blindstupid · 19/04/2021 17:18

If you own the fence, your neighbour can’t actually do anything at all without your permission. They can’t paint it, they can’t attach anything, they can’t nail or screw into it .... unless they ask you first and you give permission.

Best one I ever saw was on Reddit, guy had gone to some expense to erect a nice fence on the boundary. Neighbour immediately painted their side without asking.
OP then lifted the panels and turned them so nice, newly painted side faced them. It was rather funny and actually served well as a reminder that you cant paint random fences you haven't paid for.
Erkrie · 19/04/2021 17:28

If they've painted your trellis then you can do what you want with it. Paint over it. If it's theirs, you can't.

Willowkins · 19/04/2021 17:43

I've had some problems with my NDN - to say she has boundary issues doesn't cover the half of it. Anyway the latest is that she painted her side of the fence orange. You can tell because little bits of orange have dripped through the knot holes.
I own the fence so have thought of all kinds of revenge including just turning it round to mess with her head but I decided to ignore it and pretend I don't know instead. Excuse the mixed metaphor but is this the ditch you want to die in?

Doghead · 19/04/2021 17:47

I suspect they put the trellis up for extra privacy. They've probably painted both sides to protect it. I know when we've put new panels on, very often the neighbours at the other side don't bother painting /protecting it so they eventually wear out much quicker.

Just put your own trellis up directly next to it.

Oh, and please don't listen to other people saying these neighbours are difficult.. ...talk to them and make up your own mind. If you listened to my old neighbour my husband and I were the devil incarnate....the truth was she was possibly the most antisocial neighbour you could ever wish to meet. We had to involve the police over it.....prostitution, drugs, fights, parties, mountains of household waste in her garden, oh I could go on and on.
