AIBU or are Esther's (?) comments about teachers and nurses horrific. I know it is meant to be humourous, but where is the humour in that? Is it me?

Am I being unreasonable?

They’re pointing out that clapping nurses instead of paying them more is as ludicrous as claiming spaghetti hoops are one of your five-a-day.

It’s obviously a piss take. Confused

I suspect that's sarcasm.

Report

Mumblechum0 · 18/04/2021 18:33

I read it as sarcasm too

RobertaSloth · 18/04/2021 18:34

It’s very clearly all sarcastic.

I frequently roll my eyes at the pair of them but this was clearly a half assed joke because they don't have the energy for any more lockdown columns.

Hmm

The sarcasm flags are loud in this one. You don't see it???

They're a pair of self-satisfied twats, but to be fair to them; this is clearly intended to be humourous sarcasm.

She's taking the piss.

I tried to see it, but other parts of the article are believable. I just think it is not at all funny, and believe me, I am sarcastic beyond belief.

Of course it isn't funny, but it is meant to be sarcastic.

You didn't think 'restaurants are just somewhere different to sit' was a bit of a heads-up to sarcasm?

Report

Hothammock · 18/04/2021 18:51

It's irony. Exposing the nonsense of clapping nurses and failing to give a decent pay rise.

oneglassandpuzzled · 18/04/2021 18:52

Giles Coren is a satirist.

Spaghetti hoops actually are one of your 5 a day.

I know this isn't the point of the thread, sorry.

Fair enough, I just thought it was in poor taste. They were written by Esther from what I can ascertain.

Their joint column irritated me generally, so I'm probably looking for trouble Grin

Obviously not sarcastic enough to know it when you see it. I mean come on - alphabetti spaghetti is an English lesson. They are obviously not being serious. Hmm

It's what Giles Coren does. He's very funny and very outrageous and makes a lot of money as a consequence. And his wife does the same.

Does that make baked beans 2 of your 5 a day?

It's obviously sarcasm but I can't ever remember finding Giles Coren funny.

Report

MsVestibule · 18/04/2021 19:08

Horrific? Seriously?!! I don't think it could be more obvious it's a piss take. Whether you find it funny or not is a different matter, but if you're as sarcastic as you claim to be, how could you not see that?

He's very funny

Says who? Confused I see him as the less talented member of the family who has gets the gig because of his surname. Tedious. Skip past his articles - never found he has anything of interest to say .

You'd think so, wouldn't you, but sadly not, they're only one. Big beanies, I mean meanies Sad

It's obviously a joke/irony, as you can tell by reading it in the context of the other bullet points.

I can’t stand either of them. Esther Walker has been a hate read of mine for years, and he’s no better. Remember that racist stuff, was it about Peckham??
