AIBU or are Esther's (?) comments about teachers and nurses horrific. I know it is meant to be humourous, but where is the humour in that? Is it me?

It's exactly the sort of humour my teen is into. Sarcastic etc. I guess it's fairly straight forward to knock out.

They're awful people in general but she was being sarcy.

I really like Giles Coren, he gives not a single fuck about whether or not people like him. Yesterday’s column really made me laugh.

I only ever read Esther's stuff. Her insta is good too and her newsletter.

Obviously sarcasm.

Also what a lot of people kept saying in the first lockdown.

In the January one it changed into education/socialisation but it was still mostly.. I need to work ,why aren't schools open yet?

If you look at threads started by people struggling with childcare costs or in general , more than half the replies will mention "starting school" as a solution to their problem.

A lot of people do see school as childcare and the education part is just a bonus. Both must be excellent ,of course.

If you have an issue with what was said about teachers and nurses then take it up with the government that promotes and supports these views and the people lapping it up.

I bet the nurses loved the clap so much more than a pay rise.

@Twenty2

Spaghetti hoops actually are one of your 5 a day.

I know this isn't the point of the thread, sorry.

Don't forget chocolate orange! and a slice of carrot cake!

I love their articles and look forward to reading them, I find them extremely honest and direct, and feel relieved when I read them. They are a mix of humour, sarcasm and irony. The lockdown ones made me laugh so much, pretty much the only thing that did. Giles lost it one week. I hope they run the whole thing from start to finish. Thought the lack of sex/wanting sex and not wanting to go out comments were particularly on point, and how many people feel.

It's what Johnson's government thinks - so not news.

I can’t stand either of them. Esther Walker has been a hate read of mine for years, and he’s no better. Remember that racist stuff, was it about Peckham??

It's obviously a joke/irony, as you can tell by reading it in the context of the other bullet points.

Does that make baked beans 2 of your 5 a day?

You'd think so, wouldn't you, but sadly not, they're only one. Big beanies, I mean meanies Sad

He's very funny

Says who? Confused I see him as the less talented member of the family who has gets the gig because of his surname. Tedious. Skip past his articles - never found he has anything of interest to say .

Horrific? Seriously?!! I don't think it could be more obvious it's a piss take. Whether you find it funny or not is a different matter, but if you're as sarcastic as you claim to be, how could you not see that?

It's what Giles Coren does. He's very funny and very outrageous and makes a lot of money as a consequence. And his wife does the same.

Crankley · 18/04/2021 18:57

Obviously not sarcastic enough to know it when you see it. I mean come on - alphabetti spaghetti is an English lesson. They are obviously not being serious. Hmm

mrcerec · 18/04/2021 18:57

Fair enough, I just thought it was in poor taste. They were written by Esther from what I can ascertain.

Their joint column irritated me generally, so I'm probably looking for trouble Grin

It's irony. Exposing the nonsense of clapping nurses and failing to give a decent pay rise.

You didn't think 'restaurants are just somewhere different to sit' was a bit of a heads-up to sarcasm?

Report
VladmirsPoutine · 18/04/2021 18:51

Of course it isn't funny, but it is meant to be sarcastic.

Report

I tried to see it, but other parts of the article are believable. I just think it is not at all funny, and believe me, I am sarcastic beyond belief.
