Should I be upset at paying £300 for haircut

Hi ladies,
Have waited 7 months to get my hair done and finally went today. I got a full head of balayage highlights, a root tint to cover my greys and a cut and blow dry. The website was really unclear and it said £130 for a full head of balayage. Knowing sometimes that hairdressers add optional extras I budgeted £180 just in case. I got to the till, the receptionist seemed awkward, didn't confirm the price straightaway, so I asked her what it was, and £300 appeared on the credit card machine. I can only guess that she didn't say the figure out loud because she was embarrassed to charge me that much. I didn't want to say too much in front of a full salon full of people but I simply said "wow that's expensive?" She shrugged and didn't say anything but "your e-receipt will be sent directly to you". I thought I'd best pay and then query the receipt later as I already felt so embarrassed and caught off guard.

Looking at the receipt they have charged me for:
£130 full head of balayage
£65 full head of permanent colour
£65 ladies cut and finish
£35 olaplex
£5 tip
Total: £300

Am I right to be completely shocked at the price of this?? It did take 4 hours and I have long thick hair but really? Have you ever heard of a haircut this expensive and fellow hair stylists, does this price sound reasonable to you?

Needless to say I have sent Rush an email but am I being unreasonable questioning the price of this haircut?

I’d say the prices are standard for central London, it’s what you’ve been charged for that’s the issue, presuming you didn’t ask for the Olaplex, did they offer it/tell you they were doing it?

Also you shouldn’t have been charged for a full head tint, you can’t possibly have had both a full head tint and full head balayage.

Call them on Monday.

Also cheeky buggers adding the tip 😂😂

Hope you like it though!

The cost of vanity.

You paid, so that's the end of it.

But not the end of your vanity, I suspect!

Am I correct in thinking the OP has posted once. And now the thread is on page 21!

No you are not correct.
She posted six times.

Lassy1945 · 17/04/2021 16:57

Ah thanks
It wasn’t coming up when I selected all op posts

Whatpaint · 17/04/2021 17:12

Any response to your email yet OP?

LagunaBubbles · 17/04/2021 17:18

Don't understand why you didn't ask the exact price before they started, thats insane

Lassy1945 · 17/04/2021 17:22

I’m just baffled that someone having to really save hard for an iPad....
Went to a London hairdressers and basically had a full suite of services!

Me neither, you’d at least check first, the Info is readily available.
NewMexico · 17/04/2021 18:09

Last time I made a hair appointment I booked with the junior stylist I always have and know the exact prices of – except they’d booked me in for when she was on holiday so swapped me to a senior stylist and, as I found out at the till, upped the cost. I naively assumed that because it was their mistake they’d charge me the junior stylist prices I’d agreed upon! Definitely a lesson for me to confirm prices up front 🤦‍♀️

My hairdressers skills are far from shit!
Who is the one being rude???
My hair is amazing.... and I'm more than happy with it.... it's complimented on many times......Even by stupid, naive people who pay 5 times that price!
It's not about her not being able to be employed by salons. She loves being mobile and doing things her way..... she's extremely popular and good at what she does!
You just didn't get it , did you ?

TomorrowsPrincess · 17/04/2021 18:16

@MrsMaizel oh I got it!
Your looking down on my reasonably priced hairdresser as you pay more for an oven clean.
Whatever makes you feel good I suppose
I can guarantee my hair looks ten times better than your oven tho! 😂😂😂

LadyPoison · 17/04/2021 18:28

Coincidently just got back from the salon. Cost was £160

Root regrowth ( 4" or so...... thanks Boris)
"Refresh" of the rest as it had faded a bit
Half head of highlights and a toner
Undercut, 2" trim of ends and blow dry.

Nope 🙄

blueangel19 · 17/04/2021 18:57

After lockdown prices have gone up. Business are trying to catch up. May be we need to ask for a quote when booking. It happened to me but not at the hairdresser. Now I am making sure I ask.

Valerievalerie · 17/04/2021 19:00

Hairdresser here , Always always ask for full cost before starting. I do 2 prices for Balyage one without root tint and one with which is 20 quid extra
£22 for Olaplex .
It’s expensive, but central London . Balyage is more expensive because it’s highly skilled to do well , I went on a course in London with the main Balyage expert and he charges hundreds and in his salon and doesn’t even cut , just be pleased it’s a good Job because badly done Balyage is dreadful
You will find cheaper

RuthW · 17/04/2021 19:31

But it wasn't a haircut, it was a cut and two lots of colour. Yes it was expensive but had you just had the one colour and no cut then it would have been about the cost you expected.

TomorrowsPrincess · 17/04/2021 19:44

@MrsMaizel well that's how your coming across...... not very well at all

cushioncovers · 17/04/2021 19:54

Fucking hell some people must have more money than sense to spend hundreds on a cut and colour. 😳

MrsDThomas · 17/04/2021 20:00

Fuckinghell, how much?😱

I would die of shock there and then. I think £20 for a wet cut is a lot😂 I colour my hair every 6 weeks for £5 and cut it every 12-18 months.

You’ve been robbed.

MrsKoala · 17/04/2021 20:10
@MrsMaizel well that's how your coming across...... not very well at all
Not really. Considering her post was actually saying a direct response to a poster being rude about people who pay a lot for hair. mrsMaizel said

You're being a bit silly , rude and naive here . Let's reverse this shall we ? "Who the hell pays less than 50 quid for a colour and cut from a mobile hairdresser ? Their skills must be really shit as they don't even value their own time ! Sounds like no decent salon would even employ them . I pay more to have my oven cleaned . I can't get over as cheap a price as that 😂😂😂😂😂"

She’s quite clearly saying this is a silly and rude equivalent that no one on the higher paying side is saying. Despite the amount of people telling us we’re stupid and their hair looks better than ours even tho they just run the lawn mower over it. You’ve misunderstood her post completely.

MissMaple82 · 17/04/2021 20:16

Jesus christ. I pay 55 quid for full head, foils colour cut and blow dry

Me too. I am also baffled that somebody thought a colour treatment would include a cut and blow dry! OP if you had booked a cut would you expect a colour included..? No of course not so why the other way around.

£300 for central London for four different services is perfectly normal. Also having taken a quick look at the website, the prices are all very clearly stated. Totally unreasonable to book something and then complain about it because you haven’t bothered to find out what it costs first.

Treacle200 · 17/04/2021 20:22

I had exactly the same issue with Rush in Tunbridge Wells. I had booked online and it showed me the cost in a confirmation email. Anyway, when I went to pay, they wanted to charge £60 more than was confirmed in the booking email. I questioned the cost and they said the level of stylist I had chosen wasn't available so a higher level stylist did my hair. Of course I made it clear that this was not my error and I only expect to pay what was confirmed on my booking email. They then spent 20 minutes fiddling with their computer and dropping the price £10 at a time to see if I would pay the slightly lower amount. I stood my ground until they finally charged the correct price. The whole thing was embarrassing and I won't go back there.

TomRipley · 17/04/2021 20:29

Not me (because I have 3 kids to support) but my sister pays around this much for her hair. Also in central London and with the addition of olaplex.

I've paid £150 for baylayage and cut without a blow dry, just a rough dry in south London and that hurt.

Some places are just more expensive. I've taken my teenage son to a barbers that charge £10, another posher barbers charged £27 and once I took him to Rush in Croydon and it was about £35!
No difference in the cut at all just the place being a bit trendier.
