AIBU?

Should I be upset at paying £300 for haircut

Hi ladies,
Have waited 7 months to get my hair done and finally went today. I got a full head of balayage highlights, a root tint to cover my greys and a cut and blow dry. The website was really unclear and it said £130 for a full head of balayage. Knowing sometimes that hairdressers add optional extras I budgeted £180 just in case. I got to the till, the receptionist seemed awkward, didn't confirm the price straightaway, so I asked her what it was, and £300 appeared on the credit card machine. I can only guess that she didn't say the figure out loud because she was embarrassed to charge me that much. I didn't want to say too much in front of a full salon full of people but I simply said "wow that's expensive?" She shrugged and didn't say anything but "your e-receipt will be sent directly to you". I thought I'd best pay and then query the receipt later as I already felt so embarrassed and caught off guard.

Looking at the receipt they have charged me for:
£130 full head of balayage
£65 full head of permanent colour
£65 ladies cut and finish
£35 olaplex
£5 tip
Total: £300

Am I right to be completely shocked at the price of this?? It did take 4 hours and I have long thick hair but really? Have you ever heard of a haircut this expensive and fellow hair stylists, does this price sound reasonable to you?

Needless to say I have sent Rush an email but am I being unreasonable questioning the price of this haircut?

Goodwinter, this was at Rush in Liverpool Street. They did ask if I wanted olaplex but said it was "about £20 or £30". In my head I thought, I'll treat myself (thinking the £130 balayage will come up to around £160ish, and I thought why not I haven't had a haircut in 7 months....!)

Also I thought that about the perm dye - it's like I've paid for two heads isn't it?!?! 🤣🤣

I have emailed them but is this too late to kick up a stink now that I've paid?

I'm so gutted I've been saving for an iPad and now i feel like I've thrown it down the drain.

To be fair my hair looks beautiful but also feel like I've been mugged in broad daylight.....

I'd say overcharged by £65 as surely balage should have included the root dye.

I think Rush is one of those places which normally would have a sale / offer on, like 50 % off colour, 25% off for new customer, discounts on certain days of the week, so that normally hardly anyone pays full rates. I think you paid full rates. At Headmasters they give an estimate prior to starting which you agree to, although they also charge £35 for olaplex !

I also wondered why you need root colour as well as balayage, but I’m no hair expert.

Did they treat it with the magic flower from Tangled? Does your hair now glow and heal?

I'd be querying that on the basis of you only having one head. How can they change for a full head of balayage and a full head of permanent colour?

Does it look good? I’d want to come out looking like Claudia Schaffer for that price

I think I’d actually want to BE Claudia for that price.

That's crazy pricing !

However i would expect crazy pricing in central London. I'm also well aware of added extras and would have checked the price beforehand.

I got the exact some treatment done today minus the olaplex and paid £85. Granted it’s a small town in the North East of Scotland but £300 is WILD

I pay £150 for a cut and colour. No way would I pay £300.

That's a bonkers price
I pay around £60 for full head highlights and the cut is included in the price

My balayage costs £150. I’m given the price before they work. You shouldn’t be paying for 2 dyes

I have a balayage cut and blow-dry Nd olaplex and I pay £130 I know uts different dependent on where you live. Even when I had a colour correction which is when I started with balayage I'd didn't pay more than £150. I think the colour is an incorrect charge. I don't understand how they can colour and have a balayage? Please phone them up and question this part as there is no way it should cost £300.

I absolutely refuse to pay hundreds of pounds for a haircut. I have long straight hair that doesn’t need much styling. £50 for a decent cut and colour with my hairdresser that comes to my house.

Can I afford to pay £300 yes. Would I, hell no.

OP you said your hair is long and thick? Do you think this has contributed to the extra cost? You’ve also gone to a trendy, prestigious salon which also bumps up the price.

When I was younger it used to take 6-8 hours. Very long and very, very thick, and they would add on costs for labour. (I have two stylists to paint on the bleach).

Still though 300 is excessive so you’re not being unreasonable. For long hair in an exclusive salon 100-200 sounds about right.

You’ve been ripped off.

Update - bless my mum she's transferred me exactly £35 for the olaplex 😩😂🙈

I'm glad that you are all as shocked as I am. I'm aware they always charge extras but the last time I went to a Rush they didn't charge me extra to cover greys, it came included with the price of the balayage service. I think I paid £150 then which I thought was steep.

I wish I'd kicked up a stink now but I hate confrontation and the salon was so busy. Argh kicking myself.

I've just been on their website and all the separate bits are clearly priced. You may want to query the second colour but otherwise, it's what you asked for. It actually could have been worse - you could have had a more expensive stylist which would have added another £100 or so onto the cost in total.

A friend of mine queried the bill in a fancy Glasgow hairdressers. They had charged her separately for 4 different colours of highlights. When she dug her heels in and asked for a full breakdown of the costs they were actually charging for towels. She refused to pay.

Olaplex can be bought online for about £26 and the bottle lasts a few washes depending how long/thick your hair is.
If I've ever had a surprise when I've gone to pay I just never go back to that salon again. I also try never to go to a chain.
