Reassure me about the AstraZeneca vaccine as Denmark have banned it

Urbanhymngirl · 14/04/2021 17:33

I have my first vaccine tomorrow and it’s the AstraZeneca one - Denmark have banned it today over the risk of blood clots- Aibu to ask for some reassurance? I feel REALLY anxious 😬

The incidence is incredibly low, it's more likely you'll get side effects with the pill, paracetamol, ibuprofen or antibiotics - does that help?

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/04/2021 17:36

The risk of taking the pill is massively greater and they prescribe that every day.

doodleygirl · 14/04/2021 17:37

How old are you?

Levithecat · 14/04/2021 17:37

You have more chance of getting a blood clot flying or using the contraceptive pill. BBC have a good article here www.bbc.com/news/explainers-56665396

Urbanhymngirl · 14/04/2021 17:37

@doodleygirl 48

I have a blood clotting disorder.
I had the AZ vaccine.
I am completely fine and very grateful to be "done".

doodleygirl · 14/04/2021 17:40

Everything I have read has been in connection with people under the age of 30. I would be nervous to. Can you talk to your GP?

spanieleyes · 14/04/2021 17:41

My son is the same, he currently has a blood clot and has still been fine with AZ.

underneaththeash · 14/04/2021 17:42

You have considerably more chance of dying in a car accident on the way to the vaccine centre than dying of an AZ induced blood clot!

trunumber · 14/04/2021 17:43

At 48 you are statistically much more likely to die of covid than a clotting side effect.

I'm not positive of numbers but it's something like 1 in 6000 change of dying of covid and nearly 1 in a million of dying from covid side effects

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 14/04/2021 17:43

Clotting disorder, anaphylaxis risk and have had the AZ vaccine very willingly.

KrisAkabusi · 14/04/2021 17:54

You've more chance if being struck by lightning on the way to the vaccination centre than of getting a clot.

Spied · 14/04/2021 17:55

If you are of the age you are having the AZ then the risk of Covid and potential blood clots caused by that are greater than the risk of blood clots caused by the vax.

I've had both my AZ jabs ( 2nd was 3 days ago) and while I'm nervous I just keep thinking the above.

Twiggywinkle13 · 14/04/2021 17:57

I’m 30, I’ve had both doses and I’m going to be very honest - first dose, felt very tired the next day, so for 24 hours then was completely fine. Second dose, you wouldn’t even know id had it. Please, please get this vaccine, I’ve taken the pill for more than half my life and have a high bmi, I’m at a much much higher chance of a blood clot from either of those factors than I ever was from w vaccine.

Leapyleaffrog · 14/04/2021 18:04

Do you read the side effects on the box of all your medications? I’m looking at a box of ibuprofen at the moment- possible kidney failure, jaundice, meningitis, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure....... I still take it without blinking.

Honestly, for something that carries approximately the same risk as driving 200 miles (which has never ever occurred to me not to do in case I was injured or died) I wouldn’t think twice. Denmark hasn’t so much banned it as decided to use something else. They apparently have that luxury, we don’t.

Kazziek · 14/04/2021 18:05

I am the same age and had mine a couple of weeks ago. As others have said, you stand a much, much higher chance of being killed in a car crash. Does that stop you going in a car? You stand a much higher chance of a clot from otc paracetamol; do you still take lemsip or anything for your headache? Everything has a risk. This isn't a risk worth getting worked up about.

Lunar567 · 14/04/2021 18:09

It is still in trials until 2023, only has emergency authorisation.
Thousands reported side effects.
If you want to risk your health - go for it.
I am a little older than you and will not have any Covid vaccine. I prefer to rely on my immune system.

Lordamighty · 14/04/2021 18:10

I’ve had the AZ as have most of my friends, similar age group, we are all grateful to have had it.
One of my relatives died from taking paracetamol, should we all stop using it?

Oly4 · 14/04/2021 18:12

Risks are tiny!! You probably do more things in a week that are a far greater risk. Covid could kill you, the vaccine is highly unlikely to

Natural selection? Wink

I can't add anything further to the good points other posters have made - but in case it helps to reassure you further, both DH and I have had it and we're fine!

Lucky you with your perfect immune system.

Some of us have immune systems that already want to kill us.

The 'rely on immune system' argument is ridiculous, it didn't work for polio, smallpox, measles etc etc. But, yeah, as Jesus says, natural selection and all that.

Well, If you want to risk your health....
LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 14/04/2021 18:22

There have been 79 blood clots in the U.K. strongly linked to the vaccine and 19 deaths. The chance of getting a clot is one in about 250,000 and the chance of dying is about 1 in a million. It’s not that the problems are thought to apply more to under 30s, it’s that the risks from covid are so much less for that age group the risks/benefits analysis are much more finely balanced. For this reason I am pleased that my daughters will be offered an alternative vaccine.

I am 54 and had my first AZ jab on 23 March. I’m due my next on 12 June. I shall definitely have it.

Truthfully; if I had the choice I would probably choose to have the Pfizer. But I don’t presently have that choice and I am able to acknowledge that such a feeling is informed by understandable anxiety rather than rational thought. I would much prefer to be fully vaccinated with the AZ vaccine than risk covid; despite having no additional risk factors other than my age.

My assessment is that the risk from the vaccine, whilst present, is very, very small indeed.

I hope I have given you a measured response designed to be reassuring and accurate.

hedgehogger1 · 14/04/2021 18:23

COVID itself and things like the contraception pill have a higher risk than the vaccination. You're safer having it than not.

Urbanhymngirl · 14/04/2021 18:26

I have quite bad health anxiety to be honest. The way my mind works is that it disregards the data and thinks I will be the unlucky one 😬
