Reassure me about the AstraZeneca vaccine as Denmark have banned it

Urbanhymngirl · 14/04/2021 17:33

I have my first vaccine tomorrow and it’s the AstraZeneca one - Denmark have banned it today over the risk of blood clots- Aibu to ask for some reassurance? I feel REALLY anxious 😬

OP posts:
notanothertakeaway · 14/04/2021 18:27

I had AZ vaccine and was totally fine

Geamhradh · 14/04/2021 18:27

As a Mumsnetter said on one of the first AZ clot threads:
Given that the % of people suffering blood clots at any time who have NOT had AZ is higher (extrapolating like numbers) than among those who have, it's virtually an anti-coagulant.

rainbowunicorn · 14/04/2021 18:29

Hi OP please take a look at the following link. It gives graphs showing your risk of being seriously ill with covid compared to the risk of a blood clot from the vaccine. As you can see you have a much higher change of being very ill from covid even when cases are very low at your age. wintoncentre.maths.cam.ac.uk/news/communicating-potential-benefits-and-harms-astra-zeneca-covid-19-vaccine/

I'm almost 48. I'll be having the guinea pig vaccine when hell freezes over.

LavendulaAngustifolia · 14/04/2021 18:31

The WiFi speed is excellent.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 14/04/2021 18:31

I'm 48.

Had mine in February. Not dead yet.

DancingInTheDaffodils · 14/04/2021 18:32

Someone put this on another thread which I thought was really interesting

Reassure me about the AstraZeneca vaccine as Denmark have banned it
catsrus · 14/04/2021 18:32

Prof Claire Hopkins posted this comparison on Twitter re bloodclots

Risk from AZ is 0.0004% (4 in 1,000,000)
Risk from contraceptive pill 0.05% - 0.12%
Risk from smoking 0.18%
Risk from COVID 16.5%

it's a no brainer, seriously.

Bonus Grin 49 and had mine a month ago.

Older people refusing it should look at this relative risk
MarshaBradyo · 14/04/2021 18:34

By older I mean my age group 40s

Probably not that dissimilar for 30s

Chloemol · 14/04/2021 18:44

There are other medications taken daily that have far higher risks than AZ. Pfizer also have blood clot issues but for some reason it’s not so well publicised.

I have had AZ, as have family members and friends. Only one of us felt unwell, the rest of us you wouldn’t know you had had anything

Personally i think I have a good immune system, however unlike @Lunar567, I think it’s my responsibility to have the jab not just to protect me but also my family, who have some health issues, and anyone else I come into contact with. Also @Lunar567 people who caught it and died also had good immune systems, but absolutely your choice, just one I wouldn’t be making

Umbivalent · 14/04/2021 18:46

@Lunar567

It is still in trials until 2023, only has emergency authorisation. Thousands reported side effects. If you want to risk your health - go for it. I am a little older than you and will not have any Covid vaccine. I prefer to rely on my immune system.
Best of luck with that.
Umbivalent · 14/04/2021 18:47

@Urbanhymngirl

I have quite bad health anxiety to be honest. The way my mind works is that it disregards the data and thinks I will be the unlucky one 😬
Well then imagine if you got Covid and were the unlucky one? There's far more chance of that, than of this vanishingly small blood risk.

Almost the same age as you, had both jabs now, still able to type on mumsnet!

You are 48 -50?

And prefer to face the risk of Covid due to your immune system. Ok but you are facing a higher risk than from vaccine.

Dobbyisahouseelf · 14/04/2021 18:51

Understandable that you feels anxious with the concerns over the covid vaccinations, especially AstraZenica. However, no medicine or vaccination is completely safe or symptom free.

I had AZ last month and felt a little bit worried the day before but still went ahead as the effects of Covid-19 or long Covid-19 complications worried me more. I had a few minor symptoms for less than two days so am happy to have my second jab next month.

Urbanhymngirl · 14/04/2021 18:52

Ironically i have actually had covid - I had it last year and was really ill in bed for 2 weeks - it was genuinely bloody awful. So I don’t know why I am so anxious about the vaccine!

Glittertwins · 14/04/2021 18:53

@underneaththeash

You have considerably more chance of dying in a car accident on the way to the vaccine centre than dying of an AZ induced blood clot!
I hope not as I only have to walk 200m 😉 I'm not fussed which one I have, I just want it done!
Umbivalent · 14/04/2021 18:54

Do you ever have a drink, OP? All alcohol is ethanol, which is carcinogenic and poisonous. So you probably want to never have a drink again, if you're assessing risks.

Sadsiblingatsea · 14/04/2021 18:58

If you feel anxious about it don’t have it.
Your chances of dying from Covid are minuscule but many are suffering side effects from the vaccine.
I just wouldn’t take the risk.

Many more are suffering side effects from covid - long covid affects a high proportion of those who have had the infection.
cardibach · 14/04/2021 19:01

Oh, and also @Sadsiblingatsea, most of those side effects are ‘a bit of a headache’ or ‘slightly dizzy for a day’ or ‘a bit tired for a couple of days’. Not serious side effects at all.

londongirl12 · 14/04/2021 19:02

I hope the people of Denmark will never fly in a plane again, as you've got more chance of getting a blood clot that way.
