to let DS get his hair cut without me - he's 10!

Too late if I am as he asked this morning if he could go to the barbers (very close to our house and he walks past all the time on his way to the shop) and I said yes!

He's super proud of himself although acknowledges he struggled to explain what he wanted. Grin. It looks fine. At our local there are really only two hair styles (short all over, or short on sides and longer on top), with slight variations based on whether the sides are number 2 or number 5 so it's not like it had any chance of coming out crazy!

I’m very surprised the barber did it

Userg1234 · 14/04/2021 16:31

He's the one who has to live with it. So you should let him. I was about 8 when I first went on my own in the 70s

tonicwaterparty · 14/04/2021 16:33

Yeah, this sounds absolutely fine - he should crack on!!

Marylou2 · 14/04/2021 16:33

The was a huge queue of children outside the Turkish barbers near me yesterday. Your son would have been fine!

skeggycaggy · 14/04/2021 16:34

Yes fine. My DD went by herself age 10.

GreenClock · 14/04/2021 16:36

My kids were Year 7 and 11yo, so a year older. They’d go to the barber near their secondary school immediately after school. No big deal.

rainbowunicorn · 14/04/2021 16:44

Of course it is fine. Our local barber has a queue of boys under 12 most Saturday mornings during normal times. Parents don't hang about with them. They just get on with it.

SpaceOp · 14/04/2021 16:53

Phew, was slightly expecting to be told I'm a terrible parent! Grin. Not that it would have stopped me. I'm a big believer in independence for children!

I had my first haircut and style without my mum at that age - she dropped me off and picked me up. I was having a much longer-for perm, and they asked if I wanted my (thick, shiny, poker-straight) fringe permed too. I said yes because I didn’t know better, and ended up looking like Deirdre Barlow with a mullet. Hopefully he won’t have a similar disaster!

arethereanyleftatall · 14/04/2021 17:00

Eh? Of course it's fine.

poppycat10 · 14/04/2021 17:04

My ds has been going to get his hair cut on his own for years. I am not sure he went when he was 10, but certainly from secondary school age, so around 12 or just before he was 12.

Maybe I have been a bit trusting, but he knows what his school will allow, and it's not worth having anything too "out there". His hair has always been fine.

underneaththeash · 14/04/2021 17:17

At least it didn’t backfire. One boy in DS2’s class convinced his mum to let him have his hair cut abs he came back with tram lines. School refused to admit him and she had to take him back to have a blend done.

Brakebackcyclebot · 14/04/2021 17:18

I’m very surprised the barber did it

Why? It's a hair cut not a tattoo.

Of course YANBU, OP

So why even ask?
RickJames · 14/04/2021 17:39

I'd definitely send DS 10 alone if the barber was close, as it is I have to drive him there. I'm always the only woman there and it's a very 'manly' place so I always feel a bit odd!

Aprilshowersandhail · 14/04/2021 17:44

Better than sending him with a dh ime..
Dh let a ladies hairdresser do this to my ds...
The barber who attempted to fix it post dw rant didn't even charge him!
Poor bloody kid!

halcyondays · 14/04/2021 17:56

Of course. It’s not as if you were sending a three year old in by himself.

No need to have unnecessary extra people cluttering up the place at the mo.

Spied · 14/04/2021 18:16

I'm also very surprised the barber did it.

Insomnia5 · 14/04/2021 18:20

@Spied

I'm also very surprised the barber did it.
There’s no legal age limit to get a haircut

Grin As if it's like a tattoo.

Hagqueen · 14/04/2021 18:25

Used to be my job - i would be impressed and in all honesty, its way easier not to have to consult with two people when doing kids hair haha! But if i didn’t know a kid was coming in alone, i would’ve asked for parental permission first. Parents used to phone to book (or give us a heads up) for their kids to come alone, and possibly give us an instruction - ‘he can have what he wants but not grade 0 all over’ etc Grin

Pinkyavocado · 14/04/2021 18:27

I let my son go about the same age. He came back with an undercut, it looked absolutely hideous😂😂😂

Hagqueen · 14/04/2021 18:27

@rainbowunicorn i’ve had 16 year olds whose parents have come in screaming when their precious kid cut hair short etc, so you can imagine what an irate parent of a 10 year old would like if they didnt like their child’s choice!

I’m all for child autonomy with hair but most stylists aren’t risking their rep on a 10 year old.

GrumpyHoonMain · 14/04/2021 18:28

Sounds good to me. Lol our local barber tries to go the extra mile in trying new styles for kids & usually ends up messing it up, so DN isn’t allowed to go alone.
