What does the term 'Occasional Chair' mean to you?

I've been browsing online for armchairs and some of them seem to be labelled as "Occasional Chairs" so I'm wondering what to make of this. I've googled the phrase, and the headline results just state the obvious - that they are chairs intended to be used occasionally. Perhaps it's simply a marketing tag, interchangeable for 'Accent Chair'. But I'm wondering if there's more to it than that - perhaps it means they're more likely to be uncomfortable and/or not very resilient. The chairs I buy will be used 2-3 evenings a week for watching tv, which may or may not be considered occasional. If they split or sag after a few weeks, perhaps the seller will have an excuse to dismiss my complaint, because our usage wasn't 'occasional' enough! Smile

Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, of Occasional Chairs?

A fancy chair that you wouldn't really sit on!

TrialOfStyle · 06/04/2021 18:11

A chair that sits in the bedroom as an additional wardrobe?

Arbadacarba · 06/04/2021 18:11

I think it's a word for any chair that has no defined function - so not an armchair, dining chair, desk chair, recliner, etc. etc.

growinggreyer · 06/04/2021 18:12

I believe they are meant to be decorative chairs, not for sitting in several times a week.

moochingtothepub · 06/04/2021 18:12

Occasional use eg in a hallway, bedroom or corner generally decorative

madmara · 06/04/2021 18:13

They are individual, not part of a set/suite of furniture.

I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of use they will get and I can't believe that they come with a clause of the amount of times they can be sat on!

notlovinglockdownlife · 06/04/2021 18:13

a chair that's not very comfortable

JosephineBaker · 06/04/2021 18:13

Form over function - looks good, not really for using.

LegendDairy · 06/04/2021 18:13

The fancy chair in the lounge that nan wouldn't let anyone sit on.

FireflyRainbow · 06/04/2021 18:13

I have what I call an occassional chair but i just mean we only sit on it if all the other chairs are taken. It's the least comfortable chair I have and it's basically my cats chair where I occasionally sit 😆 I know that's not right though

BruceAndNosh · 06/04/2021 18:16

An occasional chair is only a chair on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The rest of the week, it's a table.

PourMeAGlassOfMilk · 06/04/2021 18:16

A chair in your bedroom to chuck clothes on, or a decorative one anywhere in the house that's only sat on occasionally.

AnnaSW1 · 06/04/2021 18:17

It means if you use it all the time it'll soon break.

GlacindaTheTroll · 06/04/2021 18:20

It's only a chair when a non-householder is looking.

The rest of the time it's either a wardrobe or a towel rail

RaininSummer · 06/04/2021 18:20

It's a chair which identifies as a junk store most of the time unless you have house inspecting guests.

It's a piece of furniture that seemed like a good idea at the time but which you quickly realise is not only surplus to requirements but also too uncomfortable to use anyway.

Mistressinthetulips · 06/04/2021 18:24

I am sitting on one right now.

1Morewineplease · 06/04/2021 18:27

A chair that isn't part of a suite?

whenthebellsring · 06/04/2021 18:31

I'd think decorative - something not practical enough to be a main chair. Not something you'll want to sit on often or for a long period of time - either because it's design is fragile or uncomfortable but nice to look at.

teddybearsbear · 06/04/2021 21:32

The chair that lives in my bedroom and provides a home for the clothes that are worn and too dirty to make it back into the wardrobe but too clean to go in the wash bin!

ClashCityRocker · 06/04/2021 21:48

They're for when you've got sufficient chairs most of the time, but have an odd corner of your bedroom or lounge where a chair would look good and it can be used in an emergency as an actual chair.

Mostly used to pile clothes on.

amusedbush · 06/04/2021 21:51

An accent chair. I have a very pretty teal velvet one that is placed in the corner of the living room and nobody is allowed to sit on it Grin

Akire · 06/04/2021 21:53

Fancy looking but uncomfortable to sit on Grin
