OK let's settle a debate. Should Mumsnet have a LIKE button? Or not?!

Debates have been going on over several threads this past few days.

Some people think we need a LIKE button on here. Like on facebook, and Digital Spy, and I think Money Saving Expert may have one.

So, should Mumsnet have a LIKE button? So people can 'like' a post when they think it's good? (And it may save people having to post to say they agree?)

Or is it a bad idea? Because it may create cliques and ganging-up, and may give the person with the most 'likes,' the impression they are correct, and may make the other person feel isolated and ganged up on.

So click YANBU, for we do NOT NEED a 'like' button.

or

YABU, for we DO need a 'like' button?

Thanks Smile

I don't know about a like button, but an edit button would be fabulous!

whenthebellsring · 05/04/2021 20:37

Came to aibu threads for this. Knew a smart cookie would start it. No. Absolutely not. Stand your ground and speak your mind or "nod sagely" and move on, like we're advised to do instead of writing This.

Lockheart · 05/04/2021 20:37

No but I wish we could get rid of the buttons in AIBU to get rid of the incessant polling which has nothing to do with AIBU.

MazekeenSmith · 05/04/2021 20:37

No like button!

Absolutely! But it would have to show "edited"
FlyingBurrito · 05/04/2021 20:39

How will this settle anything? This issue has been raised for years and MNHQ couldn't be clearer that they don't want a like button.

What happened to the thread on this about 2 days ago? Why do you need to start another one?

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 05/04/2021 20:39

No, it would end up being a different kind of popularity contest. More showy-offy, less useful. If I want to ‘like’ something I’ll go to Reddit.

Crockof · 05/04/2021 20:40

'Let's settle a debate' What the actual fuck?

RJnomore1 · 05/04/2021 20:40

The debates been going on For years not days and the decision is always no by the majority

Agree about the voting buttons being a pain in the arse too

There’s other forums for that kind of thing

YES TO THIS! Smile
GoToSleepBabyPlease · 05/04/2021 20:40

@SchrodingersImmigrant Yes, or only be available for 2-3 minutes after posting- I think people realise they've made a typo pretty quickly.

TheVolturi · 05/04/2021 20:41

Definitely no!

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 05/04/2021 20:41

It has been debated for years on MN, the answer is always a resounding no because people will click like instead of contributing to the thread.

whenthebellsring · 05/04/2021 20:43

Those who want like are busy clicking yabu and doing nothing else, while those who don't want it are busy posting. That's exactly what MN is for, to post, not click a button and disappear.

I agree. Even MNHQ have repeatedly said no.

I do wonder if we will wake up one morning there it will be though (complete with a Dislike button if that's the case) Remember when Most Active was inexplicably changed to Trending for no reason. Grin

Definitely not. The voting is annoying enough because it's not visible to everyone.

Geamhradh · 05/04/2021 20:51

Settle the debate started on yesterday's thread saying exactly the same thing?
Was that thread not enough? We only usually have this "debate" about once a month.

I think the lack of action on MNHQs part is that they probably don't want to invest a load of effort doing all these extra enhancements on the current platform which is aged and pretty much defunct.

If you look at most other modern forums, eg Xenforo, Reaction emoticons (Like, Love, Shock, Angry, etc) are standard features. HQ need to migrate this website to a modern platform that supports Like as standard.

It looks like more people on here want Likes, based on the voting, which is probably because people are used to them from other Forums.

Is this what you are referring to 'To think mn would be better with a thumbs up/down for each post. (88 Posts)' from Thursday? It's a 50/50.

Op is referring to a different thread from today Smile.
