OK let's settle a debate. Should Mumsnet have a LIKE button? Or not?!

Debates have been going on over several threads this past few days.

Some people think we need a LIKE button on here. Like on facebook, and Digital Spy, and I think Money Saving Expert may have one.

So, should Mumsnet have a LIKE button? So people can 'like' a post when they think it's good? (And it may save people having to post to say they agree?)

Or is it a bad idea? Because it may create cliques and ganging-up, and may give the person with the most 'likes,' the impression they are correct, and may make the other person feel isolated and ganged up on.

So click YANBU, for we do NOT NEED a 'like' button.

or

YABU, for we DO need a 'like' button?

Thanks Smile

Sorry, my second sentence sounds garbled. (Need an edit button!)

I meant...

Also, surely most people don't go on mumsnet on the app ALL the time. Constantly posting on here on my phone would do my head in. It's much better/easier on a computer/laptop.

God this comes up every few weeks someone asks this, the response is clearly no we should not.

It’s not insta, we don’t post for the likes, it’s not a popularity contest. Loads of people liking a response doesn’t mean it’s anywhere decent advice. As we have seen by the multiple pile ons and “leave the bastard” simply because he doesn’t write poems for you or some other shit. 😂

ilovesooty · 07/04/2021 14:16

@lubeybooby

I really wish there was a like button, I often want to show someone their post was great/I agree etc but cba to actually post anything. A like button would be awesome
No. Posters as just admitted above would use it instead of engaging.

On another note, some posters already cba to read the OP's posts, let alone the thread.

Lovingspring · 07/04/2021 14:19

It has been suggested many times. I don't think Mumsnet want a popularity contest, it might put some off posting.

Agree with this. ^ Smile As I have I said, I don't want a' like' button. But an EDIT one would be nice (but with a 2 minute window ONLY, to enable you to correct typos.)

I was previously against a like button. Mainly because folk would be whining how could anyone have not liked my post. Now I think it would be a really good idea.I also like the voting in AIBU.

I had noticed that. Grin

I agree with this. Also, as I (and some others have said,) if there were 2 posters arguing, it would make the person with the most 'likes' on their posts, assume they were 'correct,' and the one with very few 'likes' would feel like shit.

Basically, it would create cliques, and divisions, and bullying, and ganging-up. I have seen it happen before on some forums. It's not nice to see, and it's horrible if it's YOU who is the one getting the least 'likes' and the 'popular girl' gets loads, because all her minions are upvoting her!

I want a "Hate" button.

I want a "Hate" button.
Ooooooh, that's a bit dark! Shock

If we are having a hate button then I would like a

'Did you mean to actually post this load of old cobblers?' button or maybe a 'WTF' button?

I virtually never MN on the laptop any more.

A 'like' button would be great as you wouldn't have to quote a poster's lengthy post to just agree with it.
Simply press 'like' and leave your own comments.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/04/2021 19:47

I think a hate button is a bit nasty. You might not always, agree with what people say, but It doesn't mean their opinion is less than ypurs.
Who is anyone to imply people shouldn't be posting on here. I can take it. Im not here to be praised or likes. Idolize or despise my comments you're not going to change my thoughts and opinions.

I got called a bell end on Reddit and thought it was hilarious. So pleased I was important enough to piss that bitch off. Like I said though I can take it, but not everyone can.

Constant dislikes can be very upsetting to some. There are real people behind these usernames.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/04/2021 19:48

Also to the person who suggested the "hate" button. Do you rule the roost

Mysterian · 07/04/2021 20:03

I even designed the button!

Sorry it's a bit small. Still looks good and full of hate though.

Loving that hate button!Grin

Hastybird · 07/04/2021 21:08

A few others have pointed it out, but the tecky platform this board is on is ancient, changes to it costly, and a like button won't be 'out of the box' or even a basic change of functionality but require hacking around with pre-historic code to get it to do something it's not designed to do. Think asking your builder to install a roof garden and pool on top of a Victorian terrace. All things are possible but not economically viable. Replatforming is expensive but then all the bells and whistles are included... maybe we should have a whip round?!

Strangekindofwoman · 07/04/2021 21:33

I'd pay premium for that hate button.

Mysterian · 08/04/2021 10:17

If MNHQ get in touch I'll give them permission to use my new button. For only a tiny fee.

MrsMackesy · 08/04/2021 11:00

That button reminds me of certain people I've unfortunately come across on here or IRL. Is it modelled on anyone in particular @Mysterian ?

MrsMackesy · 08/04/2021 11:04

The word acts as a moustache - is it an incandescent Capt Mainwaring?
