I think it would be interesting especially in debated topics, I see this on newspaper comments section and it's interesting as you see what the majority thinks of comments.

Facebook is a completely different platform from MN though. It's about sharing stuff with friends - updates, pictures, thoughts etc. It's really not about chat or discussion in the same way that MN is. So responding to your friends with a like or a laughing emoji is much more straightforward and acceptable. You're not going to go on and have a full-on debate about the quality of the photograph they took in the park.

Here, we're about chat, discussion and (sometimes) heated debates. To just 'like' or 'dislike' totally shuts and dumbs down this kind of conversation, and it would be a really detrimental addition to the site.

It's bad enough already with posters who can't be bothered to engage with a thread but just bitchplop on the end with their 'words of wisdom'.

whenthebellsring · 02/04/2021 16:40

But the content/membership would remain broadly the same if MN made the site more modern.

But all the other websites are modern, can't we just have this one? Must they all be the same?

There's something to be said for the "vintage/antique" MN amongst all the "updated" identikit forums, to me at least. I hardly go on any of them for all the likes, follows and whatnot. I prefer this.

Cornettoninja · 02/04/2021 16:47

@SoupDragon but just because it’s popular and on other websites doesn’t automatically make it bad. Sometimes things that are good/useful become popular with good reason.

MNetters were very vocal about opposing the voting and quoting functions and I think they’ve been really good. I might be wrong but I don’t think they’ve taken anything away from the site.

Maybe a ‘no negative’ option could work. No thumbs down or equivalent so you could only mark a post positively..

WorraLiberty · 02/04/2021 16:54

@SoupDragon

I'm not sure the OP is looking for innovation, just a more up-to-date version of what we have now.

No, they're looking for a carbon copy of pretty much every other website out there. Just because other sites have something doesn't make it "up to date" just sheep like following of everyone else.

There is a difference between "dated" and "simplicity"

But back in the day, MN was also a carbon copy of most other chat forums.

If HQ decide to update, it'll become the same again, just more attractive (probably) to new/younger members.

But is that partly because a lot of members don’t expect to be engaged with? A lot of the time you are just posting a random comment along with a load of other random comments, there’s a lot of noise on popular threads and you do just have to say what you’ve want to say. Surely that’s part of the idea of being welcoming and open to all? I think most MNetters read through many more threads than they participate in because they don’t have much more to add to what has already been posted even though they’re actively interested. I think it’d make the place much more interactive.

MNHQ need to attract younger members though in order to keep going in the future.

I'm not sure the 'vintage' look will be for everyone.

whenthebellsring · 02/04/2021 17:16

But some young people also like vintage the same way some older people also like modern. Many younger people happily use MN as well as other more modern forums. So it's more about preference really.

The point is this is possibly the last of its kind, why does it need to go when everywhere else has what you're looking for? Some of us want this to stay.

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

Oh how I’ve missed the familiar regular MN threads.

No. For all the reasons stated upthread and on every previous thread.

I’m off to start a MN royalty thread (joking).

I’m not understanding this, has something changed?
MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2021 17:35

OP wants a 👍🏻👎🏻 but switches off voting on AIBU.

Ironic, much?

Sparklingbrook · 02/04/2021 17:35

I don't have FB, will never have FB, but I don't think it's a relevant comparison to MN.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/04/2021 17:37

Aaaaaaand just realised I'm on the app so didn't see voting.

Who's the idiot? That would be me.
