To think mn would be better with a thumbs up/down for each post.

I think it would be interesting especially in debated topics, I see this on newspaper comments section and it's interesting as you see what the majority thinks of comments.

I've sometimes wondered this. But I think I'd be freaked out knowing that hundreds or thousands of people had read my post.

Well yes, but these boards are very dated which seems odd given the money MN must make each year. The UI is about 20 years out of date really.

I don’t understand why lots of posters want MN to be exactly the same as every other website they go on. I like it because it’s not.

Oh God, please never. People should stand by their words and stop expecting feedback from strangers.

I don’t disagree with this sentiment but a thumbs up would stop the replies that sometimes clog up a thread of people just copying a response and saying “I totally agree” or “this ^” etc without adding any additional comments.

There are times when I'm lazy or don't see the point in adding my voice but agree/disagree strongly with a particular post, but on the whole, I'm grateful that MN doesn't have thumbs up/down. The voting is enough, and the threads where I can't be bothered to reply somehow muddle on without my opinion. It's a nice little lesson in "you don't have to vote/comment/make your voice heard on everything".

I wouldn't like a thumbs down button but yes, I'd like a 'like' button.

There's many a time I join a long thread and strongly agree with someone but don't want to go quoting their posts from 5 or 6 pages back.

It doesn't tend to stop conversation on other chat forums, so I don't see why it would on MN.

It's weird how OTT some people are in their response to this subject though.

No, they are just different.

It is surprisingly dated, quite slow and dare I say it a bit drab Blush

Awful idea.
Fb has all that sort of stuff. Netmums has tickertapes. I appreciate MN because it has neither.

And yet I'd say the vast majority of MNetters also use Facebook.

No way. Yuck.

A load of people just wouldn't bother commenting any more. Hate this idea.

This is what we like about it - the "dated" UI. If I wanted modcons, I wouldn't be here. There are lots of shiny websites and spaces to spend time on; a little old-school is great for us old-timers who don't enjoy lots of new-fangled, unnecessary buttons.

Indeed. 'I like it so much I want to make it known that I do but cba to use words; I just need a little thing to click and feel better'. People 😆

Facebook calls.

But the content/membership would remain broadly the same if MN made the site more modern.

When I'm on other websites, I just don't use the buttons I deem unnecessary but at least others can if they want to.

It isn't "dated" though, it's just not the same as other websites. In fact, all other websites are pretty much just little copies of each other - nothing new at all. Hardly innovative.

I'm not sure the OP is looking for innovation, just a more up-to-date version of what we have now.

I do really think MN has become dated.

Nah.

This isn’t fakebook.

Plus you’d have irate weirdos making many accounts to thumbs down a comment that offended them.

I’d quite like ‘something’. It’s interesting, on here two practically identical threads can go in completely opposite directions and I think sometimes it stunts conversation because one side basically shouts down anyone with a differing opinion. I think that can put people off posting and joining in.

Forums are meant to be interactive and on busy ones it can feel like talking into the ether, it’d be interesting to see what the effect from lurkers or those who don’t want to partake for whatever reason could have on the atmosphere.

Why do we need to see what people think of every comment?
My thoughts entirely.
Either reply to give your thoughts, agree, or disagree and if someone doesn't want to then they can read, scroll and move on.

I've had my opinion changed on threads by reading some very heated debates and seeing posters discussing ideas, adding their thoughts, sharing that they agree but with different reasons. It would be rubbish if instead of that there was 3 posts with a load of upvotes.

I agree. Sometimes the voting on AIBU threads doesn't always reflect the comments posted on them but I suspect that's because some people want their opinion known, but really can't be bothered with the constant shouting down on certain subjects.

No, they're looking for a carbon copy of pretty much every other website out there. Just because other sites have something doesn't make it "up to date" just sheep like following of everyone else.

There is a difference between "dated" and "simplicity"
