To think natural deodorants don't work?

Has anyone had a good experience with natural deodorants? Being a bit of a hippy I finally succumbed to the advertising and switched to a natural brand. Feel a bit damp and a bit smelly a lot of the time for the first month. Nothing dramatic but I can't wear the same top two days in a row now if it's a tight one, it has to be washed. As it was quite a cheap brand I signed up to the Wild eco friendly deodorants that send you the refills in the post. Hasn't arrived yet. Had high hopes for it until I received an email from them thanking me for my order and saying a lot of people find they sweat more when switching to their product but not to worry as your body adjusts eventually. They also used the word "detoxing" several times which is usually a buying red flag for me.

Has anyone found there's a period of stinkiness and then everything's fine or do they simply not work?

I use the pittock stick and it’s excellent.

When I used normal spray or deodorant I would often get a random smelly pit and it’s was awful.

For the first week or so of switching I was a bit damp and smelt a bit towards the end of the day but now I really don’t. If you are expecting to be bone dry I think none of them will do that but they do work for the smell.

On another note, utterly amazing on waste. The pit rock stick lasts absolutely ages.

The pit rock spray might be a good way to ease yourself in.

Must say I’ve been using a rock Crystal one and it’s excellent.

I use Native, it’s an American brand. It’s really effective.

GalaxyGirl24 · 31/03/2021 19:30

I use Salt of the Earth (spray not roller) and find that it works loads better than normal deodorant. There's also the added bonus of it not aggravating my asthma when I spray it like normal deo does.

steff13 · 31/03/2021 19:31

Lumé works great.

claireb7rg · 31/03/2021 19:31

I am normally very sweaty (used to use dove maximum strength and still sweated lots - attractive much 😂)

I switched to wild deodorant about a month ago and I love it, definitely feel like I am sweating less, it did take about 2 weeks to feel that though, it wasn't an instant thing

Ooh I started using wild about a month ago and I love it. Smells amazing and I don’t feel i smell bad even the next day.

bellabride · 31/03/2021 19:52

I like the Salt of the Earth spray, and feel confident all day.

Gubanc · 31/03/2021 19:54

Fit Pit works for me except right before my period.

Shampoo bars though... I gave up after trying pretty much everything on the market.

Pepperminttea16 · 31/03/2021 19:56

I use salt of the earth - perfectly decent deodorant

DaphneDuBois · 31/03/2021 20:00

I used the Aurelia one for about six months. There was no smell but it didn’t leave me dry and I got daily damp patches. Never get that with Mitchum or most other deodorants, so never again.

TrickyGoldfinch · 31/03/2021 20:03

I tried Wild and it wrecked the skin under my arms, was so itchy and painful for weeks afterwards 😭 I have super sensitive skin though so YMMV!

NearlyTheHolidays2 · 31/03/2021 20:03

We make our own. Even after a long sweaty bike ride my husband still smells good, which he never did before with regular deodorant. There are lots of recipes online but this is the one we use.

I was quite a sweaty/smelly person Blush and found it took a while (months maybe?) for natural deodorants to work. I don't think it was detoxing but something definitely changed (maybe I just got used to the smell Blush!).

I've tried Jason, earth conscious, a crystal one (this one really didn't work), a tea tree one from holland and barrett (also not great) and the Natural Deodorant Co. ones (probably the best but more expensive than earth conscious which are a close second). At the moment, I'm using an Earth Conscious bar that is really easy to use and good:

Malin and Goetz Eucalyptus changed my life! I tried some others first, including Weleda, and they were all dire. I'm a sweaty person and I actually find it much more effective than regular deodorants.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 31/03/2021 20:14

I love natural deodorants. I'm a very, very sweaty person and my clothing would end up stinking. Didn't matter how much I washed clothes the pits would get that build up. Horrible.

Natural deodorants have fixed it. At the moment I love awake organics, both the vegan one and the extra strength are excellent. I think the vegan one is better.

They don’t work, it’s just marketing. If you’re used to antiperspirant, a ‘natural deodorant’ will simply add a bit of perfume to your sweat to disguise the smell.

I have a couple of friends who use natural deodorant. Different brands. They both think they work but I think they’ve become immune to their natural body odour and just don’t notice it. It’s not very nice for the people you work with to stop using effective antiperspirant, armpit smell can be awful in a shared office.

Sunshineonarainydayy · 31/03/2021 20:35

Salt of the earth (fragrance free one) works great for me

Sunshineonarainydayy · 31/03/2021 20:36

Oh and it works for DS which is saying something

StrudelSoup · 31/03/2021 20:46

@Enidblyton1

I’m no hippy, but have been using natural deodorants for the past few years and would never go back to anti perspirants because I prefer the feel when I’m wearing the natural ones.

A friend of mine never wears any deodorant and she swears by the fact that none of us need to wear it. She never smells. I guess some people are just lucky!

Your friend is very wrong (or lucky in the company she keeps). She's just fortunate. My husband is the same - never wears deodorant and never smells. He does manual work as well.

I have to use Sure Maxi Strength or I stink. I sit at a desk. It feels very unfair! lol.

I've tried various natural deodorants over the years with no joy. Would love to find one that works. Unfortunately with natural products in general (skin cream, sun lotion, deodorants) I am prone to bad allergic reactions (hives and even facial swelling) from "natural" ingredients.

NotMeekNotObedient · 31/03/2021 20:49

I've used the salt ones but they don't react well on my skin.

I now use Ben & Anna brand. Really like it.

It does work as a deordorant but not so much as an antiperspirant.

icebearforpresident · 31/03/2021 20:57

I love Wild, been subscribing for almost a year and never had any problem.

Ijustlikedthename · 31/03/2021 21:02

I have been using Wild for around a year. It really works for me but I had to test the different 'flavours' as not all worked with my body. The 2 I found that keep me smelling good (and dry, which I was really impressed by as I sweat a lot!) were the mint one and the fresh linen/sea salt

Hoohaahoo · 31/03/2021 21:07

I’ve tried this one and this one. Both worked brilliantly but the Aurelia one had the best results.

Hoohaahoo · 31/03/2021 21:07

They both lasted a long time too.
