To think natural deodorants don't work?

Has anyone had a good experience with natural deodorants? Being a bit of a hippy I finally succumbed to the advertising and switched to a natural brand. Feel a bit damp and a bit smelly a lot of the time for the first month. Nothing dramatic but I can't wear the same top two days in a row now if it's a tight one, it has to be washed. As it was quite a cheap brand I signed up to the Wild eco friendly deodorants that send you the refills in the post. Hasn't arrived yet. Had high hopes for it until I received an email from them thanking me for my order and saying a lot of people find they sweat more when switching to their product but not to worry as your body adjusts eventually. They also used the word "detoxing" several times which is usually a buying red flag for me.

Has anyone found there's a period of stinkiness and then everything's fine or do they simply not work?

I tried Wild and it gave me an underarm cyst which thankfully went away with antibiotics, otherwise would have had to be operated to remove!!

DaisyWaldron · 31/03/2021 18:17

I keep on trying them and they have all been rubbish, and I've gone back to Dove, until I tried Akt which is extremely good, works brilliantly and smells wonderful, but is obscenely expensive. So I'm using it for the time being, and I really like it, but I don't think I can justify the price enough to make a permanent switch.

Cable1905 · 31/03/2021 18:21

I use We Love the Planet. Comes either in a tin or in a push up container. Tin seems to last longer.

I think it is effective even when on holiday in hot countries and my daughters have started to use it as well. Over the years tried lots of natural one and always went back to Mitchum but been using this for 3 years now.

notlovinglockdownlife · 31/03/2021 18:23

This one works, and it's less than £10 (from Amazon). Crystal Body Deodorant, Rock, 5 Ounce. Mine is now in 2 pieces as I dropped it but I've been using it for 2 years and think it will last at least 3. No smell even after exercise. I am post menopause though so perhaps less moist than when I was younger.

ZaraW · 31/03/2021 18:23

I use Tom's of Maine. It works really well in hot weather.

TooYoungToNotice · 31/03/2021 18:31

I've got a crystal one that works great for smell but does nothing for dryness at all.

I've got the solid bar company's aluminum free push up deodorant. Packaged purely in cardboard for environmental reasons. Not at all bad for dryness, not as good as the crystal one for smell, but for me I can get a full day from one application and I'm a fat lass in a physical job.

Someone on here kindly recommended their solid shampoo and conditioner after I had been struggling with the type of solid shampoo that required a transition and vinegar rinse and I have to say their products are good.

redcandlelight · 31/03/2021 18:31

tried and failed.
however, I discovered there is something in the 48h claim most anti perspirants have. I apply it every other day now.

SplendidSuns1000 · 31/03/2021 18:32

I've tried countless natural deodorants and made a few myself and none seem to work. I'm not particularly sweaty or smelly generally but I found they made me sweat a lot and get smelly very quickly. I wish there was one that actually worked but for now I use a low fragrance aluminium free stick.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 31/03/2021 18:33

I use either Salt of the Earth or Nuud (a silver based cream that only needs applying every few days) and both have been very effective for me after all the standard ones (Mitchum etc) proved useless for me.

GoWalkabout · 31/03/2021 18:35

Pitrok solid salt block works for me but probably took a few weeks at least to build up. None of the others did.

ZaraW · 31/03/2021 18:37

I wish there was one that actually worked

Some do you haven't found one that does. The one I use mentioned above got me through summers of travelling in Asia and working in the Middle East.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 31/03/2021 18:43

tried one a few years ago - had horrendous BO

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/03/2021 18:44

They just don't work, unless you are a person who doesn't sweat and could skip deodorant altogether.

Not only have I tried them, but I have been in the company of people who believe them to be effective. They do prevent full on BO, I'll give them that, but they don't prevent a basic sweaty smell, and it gets into clothes and stays there.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 31/03/2021 18:48

I bought wild. I just found I felt too sweaty, it just didn't reduce the amount of sweat (even after months). I don't think I'm a terrifically heavy sweater either. Basically unless you are wearing very loose floaty cotton clothing in a relatively warm climate where perspiration will evaporate, you inevitably end up smelling less than fresh because the dampness never quite goes and it's a bit like if you leave wet washing in the machine all day.

Enidblyton1 · 31/03/2021 18:51

I’m no hippy, but have been using natural deodorants for the past few years and would never go back to anti perspirants because I prefer the feel when I’m wearing the natural ones.

A friend of mine never wears any deodorant and she swears by the fact that none of us need to wear it. She never smells. I guess some people are just lucky!

missbridgerton · 31/03/2021 18:57

I've been using the charcoal natural deodorant, and it works brilliantly but the bicarb made my underarms raw. I had to phone our GP in the end and get some steroid cream, as I was in such discomfort. I've actually got scarring from using it Sad

I'm now using Moo Goo, but I didn't realise it's a roll on which takes forever to dry. I feel damp but there is no odour. Not sure it will be enough for the summer.............

coconutmonkey · 31/03/2021 18:58

I always thought I was a really sweaty person and couldn't find any particular ant-perspirant which worked long term. Hesitantly switched to a natural deodarant after my sweaty other half made the change and swears that he sweats less now he's cut out antiperspirant.
So far, I'm really impressed! Will await the warm weather before I say I'm completely sold but I definitely am not sweating as much or getting that horrible surge of wetness which used to come with anxious or stressful situations.
I have been using Earth Conscious stick deodorant and he uses Ben&Anna.

gothicsprout · 31/03/2021 18:59

I use Wild at the moment and find it ok? I’m not totally sold, but I did buy a refill pack recently.

I don’t know if they’ve had a formula change or if it’s different for the different scents but I’m having much less problem with white marks on clothes with my latest refill than I did initially. It took longer than I expected, but I do think I sweat less now with using it consistently too - maybe just a placebo effect! The refills also last me much longer than they suggest they should.

JuniperBeer · 31/03/2021 19:00

Deodorant basically just attempts to cover up the smell- antiperspirant physically stops you sweating.

Deodorant is fine for people who might not sweat a lot. But otherwise a decent antiperspirant is what you want!

enjoyingscience · 31/03/2021 19:01

I’d worry that the detoxing period would just be to let yourself go nose-blind to your own smell 😂

LividLiving · 31/03/2021 19:03

I use Pitrok religiously and I used to be a Mitchum girl.

Never feel smelly or any more sweaty than I did with Mitchum. I’ve always washed tops after one wear, though.

(Trousers can do forever)

PepperPotty · 31/03/2021 19:06

I’ve been using Pitt Balm from my local refill shop for a good few weeks and so far so good. Will see how it goes as the weather warms up!

MissCrowley · 31/03/2021 19:07

I use wild and have done for a year, I love it! Probably just depends on the person.

PepperPotty · 31/03/2021 19:07

(No ‘detoxing’ period for me, if anything it’s better than the anti perspirant I was using before)

GertrudeKerfuffle · 31/03/2021 19:09

I've been using natural deodorants for 20 years and used all sorts. The thing that has been a massive help has been switching to soap for washing - proper soap (not stuff like Dove bars that isn't actually soap Hmm) which I did for environmental reasons. Soap seems to clean the pits much better than shower gel, so now all I use is a salt stick. There was a lengthy thread on here a while back the amazing difference people found when using soap (don't know how to link from the app though).

The only time I tend to get stinky is if I get stressed out - that horrible fear sweat, which in my experience can't be stopped by anything! I've also found the armpits on my clothes have been staying fresher too since using soap.
