AIBU?

Difference between bras and bikini tops?

Genuine question here and it's in relation to a Dailymail article (yes I know):

mol.im/a/9417311

There is a picture among tons of images of women on the beach with bikinis and among these pictures is a picture of 2 women on Barry Island wearing shorts and a bra.

A lot of the commenters on Dailymail are saying how the women look like 'typical Barry island girls', 'why are they wearing their underwear and not a bikini?' "Walking around in bras - classy"

AIBU to think that these ladies are getting a hard time over the bra picture? I mean, I wouldn't personally walk around in my bra but I wouldn't resort to calling these ladies 'scummy', 'not classy' 'typical Barry girls'.
There are tons of images of women in bikinis so I really don't see the difference apart from they're wearing bras... but bikinis look like bras?

Also men can walk around topless? I don't see commenters being disgusted by that.

Also: please no covid comments aboit the amount of people on the beach, i'm sure there are plenty of forums to discuss that on; this one is about bras and bikinis

It’s bonkers really, there’s no difference between a bikini top and a bra.

Well to me, bras are underwear, for wearing under clothes and not to be seen even bra straps.
Bikinis are designed for the beach / beach resorts.
But what do I know.

@TeenMinusTests but what is the difference between a bra and a bikini?
It seems outdated that, God forbid, a woman shows a bra strap but a man can walk around with his nipples on show

The fabric & design are different.

In the same way boxers & trunks are different

It does look tacky/cheap to be walking around in a bra.

@AmelieTaylor I think I just find it a crazy conept that bras and bikinis both have a similar look - especially non-padded bras - yet one is "right" and one is "wrong";
I still don't think these women should be ridiculed online over it though - considering they were just going about their day and then Dailymail take a photo of them

Judgemental Julie's wear your bra with pride I say but on the other hand I am slightly embarrassed when my mother does this and cringe inwardly whilst knowing I am being a total hypocrite

@Stoppissingonmyheather Does your mum wear a bra as a bikini top? Haha I really don't see the different (showing the same amount of skin haha); I wouldn't personally do it but at the same time wouldn't look down on someone wearing an orange bra rather than an orange bikini top

I guess bras are flimsier, Lacy and more see through?
I wouldn’t wear a bra thinking it’s just like a bikini top, I agree with the opinion it’s tacky.

@Stoppissingonmyheather you hardly see comments about those "topless men are typical", "that topless man's mother must be ashamed", "god, that man without a top on is so unclassy"

I agree op. Though you wouldn't catch me in my bra or see a bra strap under my t-shirt as I don't wear one 🤣

@Mellonsprite none of my bras are see-through; and not all bras are lacy;
Bikini tops can also be flimsy - I have an orange bikini top that is rather flimsy

your life would be so much more pleasant if you stayed off the daily Mail site

In that case someone might struggle to actually tell the difference then?

@LST I also go braless quite regularly under topsBlush
I think my problem stems from the fact many men are topless on the beach and during hot weather, yet people have a problem with these ladies just wearing a bra? I'd hate to see the heart attack the DM commenters would have if they were topless on the beachA

@mackleless life would be more pleasant if people didn't judge people and that's whether Dailymail was about or not

ILovetheSunshine1234 yep true double standards shouldn't be allowed (daily mail comments that is)

Well it depends on the bra and bikini but I don't see anything at all wrong with what those women are wearing. All my bras are a plain black lightly padded t shirt style as fitted by bravissimo and they cover a damn sight more than a lot of bikinis.

But it's the daily mail, they write ridiculous shit about women. They're probably not going to stop, so what can you do apart from not give them the attention they crave.

I wouldn’t personally walk around in my bra but I can’t get worked up about other people doing it especially on the beach. On the beach I probably wouldn’t notice. The daily fail comment section is a parade of cunts and their judgments don’t surprise me at all.

If you're so upset about the Mail being sexist, why are you linking an article of theirs to get lots of clicks?
Bras and knickers are designed as underwear, bikinis are outerwear. It's the same argument about people wearing their pyjamas out. They're not indecent and are very similar to clothes but some people don't think they should be worn outside the house.

I am shocked! There is a woman in a bikini in the Daily Mail who is 24 years old. I thought that the Paper that Supported the Blackshirts only photographed teenage young women in bikinis.
