To ask what the difference is between ‘mom’ jeans and ‘boyfriend’ jeans?

I bought a pair of ‘mom’ jeans from Topshop last Spring and have worn them twice. I really struggle to make them look good. I’m a size 8 so hardly massive but they make my area look huge!

They just didn’t live up to my expectations sadly. I’m wondering what the difference is between those and boyfriend jeans and wonder if those were actually what I should’ve bought?

I don't understand the fashion for 'mum' jeans. They make me think of this SNL sketch and they're just so ugly!

FallenSky · 30/03/2021 12:37

I think mum jeans are higher waisted and slightly more fitted on the legs. Boyfriend jeans seem to me mid rise and baggy all over. I've never found a pair of either that look good on me.

Absofruitly · 30/03/2021 12:40

The high waist is definitely the most prominent feature of the mum jeans. It's a rare person who can pull that off. Boyfriend jeans I think of as more slouchy, but not with a high waist.

CocktailOnion · 30/03/2021 12:42

I think they are pretty much the same ill fitting, unflattering frumpy looking garments .

MatildaTheCat · 30/03/2021 12:42

I have a pair of some hybrid of these jeans and my DH (who very rarely comments on my appearance) asked with some astonishment where they’d come from and they looked as if I’d bought them at a jumble sale.

They are now my 2nd/3rd/last choice of dog walking jeans. Grin

NotATomato · 30/03/2021 12:43

Now that skinny jeans are supposedly out, I was wondering about mom or boyfriend jeans but they just seem to be unflattering around the arse area! I’m only 5ft2 and don’t want to look shorter. And I am never going back to bootcuts.

brogo · 30/03/2021 12:44

Might depend on your body shape. I am an hour glass with a small waist and big bum and mom jeans suit me better than skinny jeans, however I don't think baggy boyfriend jeans would suit me.

whatswithtodaytoday · 30/03/2021 12:44

Mum jeans were ugly in the 90s and they're ugly now. Hot 17 year olds can wear them because they look good in anything, but they would look better in something else.

Purplelion · 30/03/2021 12:50

I love mum jeans! I’m 5”2 and a size 10 and find them really flattering. They only work for me with a fitted top, so I tend to wear them with a body suit

misselphaba · 30/03/2021 12:51

Mum jeans look best on people who aren't actually mums, I think.

Same as granny chic only looks good up to a certain point at which point you start to resemble your Nan.

Jennyennidots · 30/03/2021 12:53

Yanbu for asking, I’m afraid I have no idea and have also bren wondering what sort of heans to buy now that skinny jeans are on their way out.

Jennyennidots · 30/03/2021 12:53

been jeans 🙄

NowWeAreFuckingWeasel · 30/03/2021 12:54

Is this the weird (and extremely unflattering) Brosette trend I've noticed? I'm a fan of high waisted jeans as they hold my belly in, but baggy, stonewashed and the hem being halfway up your calves is not a good look, not on someone of my age anyway - I would just look like one of those eccentric old ladies wearing her 30 year old jeans.

Men will be wearing high waisted, super-pale stonewashed loose fit jeans with black loafers or brogues next. Betting shop chic is in for the boys.

3Britnee · 30/03/2021 12:56

I'm going to go back to 501's. Mum jeans aren't nice.

SaskiaRembrandt · 30/03/2021 12:59

@CocktailOnion

Yes, this.

And I know someone will say they work on slim people, but that's not true. My niece and I are both very tall and regularly described as willowy, effectively, we are the people they should suit. Yet, we both look like a bag of mashed crabs in those hideous monstrosities. They suit no one!

ExhaustedFlamingo · 30/03/2021 13:01

I still have my bootleg jeans which I bloody love.

I’ve never owned a pair of skinnies due to having legs like bursting sausages.

I’m gleefully going back to my bootlegs. When I lose enough weight to get my fat arse back in them 😂😂😂

Mom jeans are high waisted, boyfriend are mid rise.

If you have small waist mom jeans a better bet. If you have slim hips boyfriend a better bet.

Both tricky though. You have to get for and length absolutely spot on to stand a chance.

N4ish · 30/03/2021 13:07

I'm very much a mum and I love mom jeans! Same as a previous poster I have small waist and biggsh bum and hips, somehow the mom jeans shape is the most flattering.

DuchenneParent · 30/03/2021 13:17

I love my mom jeans after years of only skinny/slim fit! Free your legs, I say.

alltoomuchrightnow · 30/03/2021 14:02

BF slouch
Mum high waisted, always unflattering

Delatron · 30/03/2021 14:54

I don’t like Mom jeans, they don’t suit my shape which is size 8 but with slim hips. I think you may need more definition between hips and waist for them to look good. Boyfriend jeans drown me though.

I like a girlfriend jean (a bit slimmer than boyfriend) or a straight cut but with a crop. Maybe also a kick flare for summer.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 30/03/2021 15:01

I can't get my head around this either

Teen DD has pronounced that she will not wear skinny jeans (which she looks really good in due to being skinny) or leggings now but Mom/ boyfriend jeans and joggers. They look a lot worse on her in my opinion. She couldn't look bad exactly but not as good. She asks me what to wear with them and
I have no idea what would look good. I think it has to be cropped tops or very fitted tops but both those are quite revealing of her chest which she isn't comfortable about. It's a pretty horrid fashion IMHO

LizBennet · 30/03/2021 15:50

As pp, I have a small waist and large bottom, mom jeans look best on me imho.
