Donate, right?

Someone is stopping by in 20 minutes to an hour to pick up bags and bags of clean used clothes and toys to donate to an orphanage abroad. (We’re not in the UK, and yes she’s definitely genuine. Not a reseller.)

Some of it is playmobil (a big collection) and a few days ago I’d listed it on our Gumtree equivalent, before this woman got in touch again. I could probably get about 35 euros for it.

But I should just pull the ad and give her the playmobil too, shouldn’t I? I’m on the verge of
doing it and I need to be reassured that it is indeed the right and responsible thing. And it will get the bloody box out of my life once and for all!

YANBU = what’s written with you woman? Save yourself the hassle and give the kids some fun!

YABU = are you mad? You should never give away what you could get a few quid for.

You have already agreed to donate so give it to the orphans

TheWitchersWife · 29/03/2021 16:48

I'd give it away.
I had someone collecting a cot before that I was selling for cheap, and gave them my baby bath and some clothes too.
I was originally selling the other things but not for much and it felt like a good deed.

LubaLuca · 29/03/2021 16:48

Donate it. It's worth more to the orphanage than it is to you. Good deed done for the month.

Wanderlust20 · 29/03/2021 16:49

Was the PlayMobil stuff included originally or are they a separate advert on the Gumtree type site? If separate, don't feel you NEED to? But if they were included then of course you should include. Sorry if I have wrong end of the stick!

Wigglegiggle0520 · 29/03/2021 16:49

What do your kids want to do? I assume it was theirs? Could 35 euros go towards something they want?

Sounds like you’re donating a lot which is very generous so I wouldn’t feel bad about selling the playmobil.

Wanderlust20 · 29/03/2021 16:50

But agree with others, probably easier to just get rid in one go!

mackleless · 29/03/2021 16:50

here’s your gold medal 🥇

No she just knows I have some stuff for her to pick up. I hadn’t mentioned the Playmobil.

My children aren’t bothered. Thanks to extremely indulgent grandparents they have more toys than they could ever reasonably play with. We had the clearout in Jan/Feb (delay in collection is for covid reasons) and they’re not bothered what happens to it as long as it’s put to good use.

I'd sell the Playmobil. You're already giving away bags and bags of stuff, no harm selling some bits.

ConcreteUnderpants · 29/03/2021 16:56

Donate
Get it out of the way, clearing space (headspace also) plus helping others. Job well done.

TimeForTeaAndG · 29/03/2021 16:58

I'd sell it. Stick it on Facebook marketplace if you have a fb account. I've found it much better than gumtree type sites.

Buckingafout · 29/03/2021 16:58

I'd donate, but it depends on whether that 35euro would make a big difference to your household finances.

It’s more that I can’t be arsed, I’m pleased to see the back of all the rest of it! I sold masses of stuff in January, but somehow this never got listed. (Sorry for arguing with you, I think I already know what I want to hear Grin)

JackieTheFart · 29/03/2021 16:59

I would just donate it. But there’s nothing I hate more than trying to sell stuff.

MiddleClassProblem · 29/03/2021 17:01

Unless I needed the money I’d donate it. As you say it takes away the faff of selling.

But if selling means you have somewhere the money needs to go then so that.

PinkArt · 29/03/2021 17:01

Is the money or the space once it's gone more important? Sounds like it's the space so I'd say donate

ThePricklySheep · 29/03/2021 17:03

Donate it and then don’t feel bad about not giving to charity for the next few requests by school/friends etc.

stackemhigh · 29/03/2021 17:03

Are you rich? If yes, donate it. If not, sell it.

There is no shame in not donating everything.

DaysAreGettingLongerNow · 29/03/2021 17:09

Definitely not rich, but as a single mother I’m also time-poor so it’s always a trade-off.
This thread has certainly made me check my privilege though, to coin a phrase.
There will doubtless be other times she can collect and I can always donate it then.
I’ve pulled the Hot Wheels though, it’s been on the site for a month and no interest. I’m sure the kids will love that.

I would donate; selling always ends up being more painful than it should and I feel like I’ve wasted so much time in the process that the cash isn’t much of a bonus!

RB68 · 29/03/2021 17:19

I would sell the playmobil as it is relatively valuable if clean and sorted and packaged - especially in original box e.g. As a single Mum a bit of cash wouldn't go amiss - charity is covered by the clothess and shouldn't be making you feel bad about needed some money back from your belongings.

That’s my feeling.

They’re not here yet, I’m still on the fence 🤣 Absolutely ridiculous of me. Such a primal urge to keep hold of our possessions even when we don’t even want them!

I can make more working than for spending time packaging up the stuff. I enjoy it more too!
