Donate, right?

Someone is stopping by in 20 minutes to an hour to pick up bags and bags of clean used clothes and toys to donate to an orphanage abroad. (We’re not in the UK, and yes she’s definitely genuine. Not a reseller.)

Some of it is playmobil (a big collection) and a few days ago I’d listed it on our Gumtree equivalent, before this woman got in touch again. I could probably get about 35 euros for it.

But I should just pull the ad and give her the playmobil too, shouldn’t I? I’m on the verge of
doing it and I need to be reassured that it is indeed the right and responsible thing. And it will get the bloody box out of my life once and for all!

YANBU = what’s written with you woman? Save yourself the hassle and give the kids some fun!

YABU = are you mad? You should never give away what you could get a few quid for.

I'm self-employed and I've very recently gone through this myself.

I have girl/boy twins and I'd kept all their clothes from over the years, plus there was some toys that were still in good nick. My house is too small for us all really (need to move or extend) and I desperately needed to get rid of the stuff. I could do with the money tbh and planned to photograph it and stick it on Ebay but I have very little time to myself.

People wiser than me pointed out that the time was worth more to me than a few quid from the clothes etc. Like you OP, I would earn more by working during that time than I would photographing and flogging stuff off. It felt very wrong to me at first to pass up an opportunity to make some money but oh my goodness, the relief of clearing out the space! Since then I've done it several more times with other things and I can say it was the best decision I ever made.

If I had loads of spare time and wasn't self-employed, or if work was a bit scarce I'd have sold it. But it really didn't make economical sense and I had been meaning to get round to doing it for literally YEARS.

@MenaiMna

Give the Playmobil to the mumsnetter who gives us pandemic scenes in Playmobil!
Great idea! I wish I could - Brexit has made that a massive faff, much more than selling it.

Do you need the money?

I just donated loads of clothes that I could have sold because I didn't need the money & cba to advertise/pack/post.
