To wonder if Holly , Davina etc really use £5 hair colour?

I use these dyes and they’re not brilliant. If I had millions I’d definitely use a salon. I kinda doubt that Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall really use them - but I know advertising regulations are so strict these days maybe it’s true! So do they really dye their own hair or not?

I very much doubt it!

I know Jerry Hall used to swear she used L'Oreal or something - again about a fiver. I doubt that, too!

HollowTalk · 26/03/2021 17:33

The companies may create something just for them, though, so they can say that's the brand they use.

Love51 · 26/03/2021 17:33

At the moment they might! Especially if paid a million.
Also just because they use X product it doesn't mean they do it themselves. They might in non covid times have their hairdresser do it for them.

I highly doubt Andie MacDowell used it either.
1FootInTheRave · 26/03/2021 17:35

Do they balls.

Shoppingwithmother · 26/03/2021 17:35

Angela Scanlon, who used to do an advert for one of the dyes was on the Fortunately...with Fi and Jane podcast last summer and she said she did have to!

THisbackwithavengeance · 26/03/2021 17:35

I agree. Box hair dye is shit. No way does Holly get those highlights from a box at home.

I use box dyes because I am too busy and tight to go and have my hair done properly. But if I were a celebrity on TV, I'd be at the hairdressers every week.

It all just insults our intelligence.

CanIHaveAHolidayPlease · 26/03/2021 17:37

I'd say Holly does. Hers is very yellow since she's had this contract with whoever the cosmetics company is. It used to look lovely years ago. Still, if I was paid millions to dye my own hair I'd jump at the chance!

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/03/2021 17:38

Honestly? I've had my hair done a few times in salons including some quite expensive ones. They were average at best. My mother and sister both do a better job on my hair with a £5 box.

The art of the hairdresser is in getting the right dye blend to achieve the colour you want from your natural starting point. With practice and care you can achieve excellent results with cheap home boxes, it's just about finding the right shade.

Devlesko · 26/03/2021 17:38

I always wonder why they don't get normal people with problem hair, or the skincare ads, people who need the stuff.
It's obvious their stuff is shit and only good for those who had it done in a salon, or a private hairdresser in celebs cases.

TheVolturi · 26/03/2021 17:38

If Holly is only doing her roots then I imagine she does use it from time to time because I've definitely noticed her roots looking a bit orangey in the past.

Zancah · 26/03/2021 17:38

Davina is in a relationship with an excellent hair stylist!
I follow him on social, he's been doing free hair clinics and tutorials for at home hair colouring and, well basically- how to bodge it until the salons open again. He's a little goldmine of information.

Megan2018 · 26/03/2021 17:38

They have to use the product for the ad.
This does not mean they use it again, just enough for the ad narrative to be true. And it can be applied by a pro....

Same as shampoo ads etc. Their hair has to be washed in it and they will be given quantities of it. Doesn’t mean they wash their hair with it after the ad

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/03/2021 17:39

Lol.

It's advertisement. I highly doubt anyone doing adverts foe anything is actually properly using it.

Jetsthebestgladiator · 26/03/2021 17:40

Hollys hair doesn’t look great. They could both be box dyed

CounsellorTroi · 26/03/2021 17:40

Same with whitening toothpastes. Only advertised by people with gleaming teeth.

LisaStansfield · 26/03/2021 17:41

I'm a hairdresser and can confirm that no, that isn't box dye. I don't know what the regulations are wrt being allowed to make claims about what a product can do while showing hair that has been professionally coloured, whether for example you'd be allowed to show someone who'd had their hair professionally coloured with eg a l'oreal salon colour while advertising l'oreal box dye - I don't know. we talk about this at work a lot! but can never work out what the law is.

what do you use? what do you struggle with? are you covering grey, are you lightening, what's the deal? obviously Grin I would always recommend a professional colour (and it doesn't have to cost loads - if you have an FE college locally, the hair and beauty students always need people to practise on, and although they are students, they will be closely supervised by an experienced colourist, depending on what you want and how much of a free rein you want to give them this will cost either very little or nothing at all) but I fucking miss doing hair and I live in the real world and I know box dye's not going away, so if you tell me a bit about your hair I can maybe advise you how to get the most out of home colouring.

Katrinawaves · 26/03/2021 17:41

Holly’s hair is a really nasty shade of yellow. Having seen her in person I can confirm that’s not just bad TV lighting. If she pays good money to a colourist for that, they saw her coming! So I’d say she genuinely uses a box dye.

I’ve never seen Davina or Angie McDowell in the flesh but their colours also look potentially home dyed - they don’t have much subtlety about them certainly.

EachandEveryone · 26/03/2021 17:44

If Davinias bloke does it for her using the box dye then its bound to look good. My hairdresser friend said box is just as good its down to the colour you choose and how you apply it.

Zancah · 26/03/2021 17:47

It's definitely easier, and safer, to box dye browns and reds than it is blonde. I'm a fairly experienced box-dyer but honestly wouldn't attempt blonde at home.
Luckily I went dark again at the start of 2020 so I haven't had the roots problem or been at all tempted.

TheVolturi · 26/03/2021 17:48

@LisaStansfield I didn't know you'd become a hairdresser! 🤣

1FootInTheRave · 26/03/2021 17:49

What would Brad Mondo say?

megletthesecond · 26/03/2021 17:49

I assume it's the box dye done by a professional colourist.

Fandangoes · 26/03/2021 17:50

I agree with a PP and think that Holly actually does! Her hair is very yellow and brassy looking and looks like a hone dye job. My hairdresser and I have discussed this before, you would think with her money and contacts she would be able to get a better colour job on her hair

Zancah · 26/03/2021 17:50

What would Brad Mondo say?

Bloody love watching his videos Grin
