To wonder if Holly , Davina etc really use £5 hair colour?

I use these dyes and they’re not brilliant. If I had millions I’d definitely use a salon. I kinda doubt that Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall really use them - but I know advertising regulations are so strict these days maybe it’s true! So do they really dye their own hair or not?

I look at it not as, “this is Davina modelling this product” but “this is Davina whose shade - wherever it came from - is close enough to shade in this box.”

I’m 99% against false representation, and 1% if you’re stupid enough to believe that celebrity got that look from this product and zero styling, lighting, touch upping etc then you deserve to be conned 🤣

Btw hairdressers will tell you "professional" dye is somehow drastically different, it really isn't in terms of the basic ingredients.

Well it is if it's bleach/peroxide based. Box dyes can only contain 3% (I think?) whereas salons can use a mush stronger formulation.

the peroxide in box dye is 40 vol, to make good on those 'covers all greys' claims, allowing for user error. the absolute maximum we would use in the salon is 30 vol, and then only for high lift colour or if someone was 80% grey or more. for most women covering greys, 20 vol is what we use. 40 vol peroxide is what makes box dye look so shiny and glossy at first, then rapidly fade and look dull, as it damages the cuticle of the hair more than a lower volume would. so although the differences in product is not necessarily "drastic", they are different, and the differences in outcome can most definitely be "drastic".
Oooohbehave · 26/03/2021 18:19

I can't see Holly lashing a nice and easy on her barnet to be honest!

Troublewaters2021 · 26/03/2021 18:21

I have done one of their hairs quite a few times. I can’t say she defo never uses the boxed ones but I doubt regularly.

TheVolturi · 26/03/2021 18:39

@LisaStansfield 🤣🤣🤣perfect

I have my hair dyed blonde at a salon, there is no way Holly is achieving the colour she has from a box dye. Perhaps if she was already quite fair but her natural hair colour is very dark. The strength of the bleach in those boxes isn't higher enough to lift the hair that blonde. During lockdown I had to buy my colour from a salon stockiest so that I was able to get my hair very blonde otherwise the box dye would have made my hair go yellow. Holly does have some brassy tones but I think it's just coloured badly.
Davina has a youtube account and apparently, as already mentioned is in relationship with a stylist.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 26/03/2021 18:45

No they don't and they shouldn't be allowed to say they do.

kissmelittleass · 26/03/2021 18:58

Davina has a YouTube channel and in one of her recent videos she said she genuinely used the hair dye she advertises!

SunshineCake · 26/03/2021 19:08

I wish someone would tell Holly her hair is wonky. If it is meant to be like that it is not a good look.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/03/2021 19:10

This is just not true. If anything box dye is more likely to be 20 vol (lower strength) and salon dye stronger.

HermioneMakepeace · 26/03/2021 19:10

The one that got me was Beyoncé “because I’m worth it”. Her hair is EXTENSIONS. You don’t dye them, you buy them that colour.

Sparklingbrook · 26/03/2021 19:12

I’ve seen clips of Davina and Holly applying the box dyes while on a video call to each other. 🤷‍♀️
Davina’s boyfriend is a celebrity hairdresser and on his Instagram hair talks (which are very informative) he says box dyes are fine as long as you apply them correctly you can get great results.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 26/03/2021 19:12

I reckon they get away with it because bollocks do they use three packs of Nice n Easy every month to keep the roots hidden by doing a test strand at the back where it can't be seen if it needs to actually be on their head and more likely, cut off and done when they aren't even in the same city as the box dye.

Pumperthepumper · 26/03/2021 19:16

I don’t think there’s a huge difference I ingredients, although my hair is always nicer for longer after a decent dye job. It’s the usual problem - if you want a professional job, pay a professional. And (and genuinely, sorry if this offends) you can always tell the difference between a box dye and a professional one.

littlepattilou · 26/03/2021 19:17

No WAY do they!

Remona · 26/03/2021 19:18

Isn’t there also one where one of the Kardashians advertises a home hair dye? As if!! Advertising agencies must think we’re all pretty dense.

It’s like the Skoda advert. It always makes me shout at the telly - “No way on this planet does Paloma Faith drive a bloody Skoda!”

Whoopsies · 26/03/2021 19:19

They did a joint Instagram live during the last lockdown where they used their own box dyes on themselves to touch up their roots and colour. They might not use them all the time, but they did at least once!

OH MY GOD I’d love to know how much this cost L’Oréal! It’s like the Oprah Winfrey interview, they didn’t get paid for the actual interview but I bet they got a hefty lot for the gender reveal!
Pumperthepumper · 26/03/2021 19:21

Sorry, that sounded sarcastic but I really did mean it genuinely!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 26/03/2021 19:32

Bollox.
Anyone remember the short lived advert with Sharon Osbourne shopping is Asda? Just as believable

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 26/03/2021 20:20

Also all the skin care.

Promoted by folk who look as though they’ve been tweaked and hoiked and have had filler for breakfast lunch and tea.

Welllllllllllllllleyellellllllllllll. Not looking at anyone in particular.

My arse.

ApplyWithin · 26/03/2021 20:27

Well, I’m not sure about Holly but I follow Davina on Instagram and she often talks about her hair dye and swears blind she uses the box dye. I’ve watched several videos of her applying the stuff. I actually think they both do use box dyes as neither has highlights, their hair is all one colour. They don’t have very nice hair actually and would both look better for going to a salon and having a less harsh tint.
