If you calorie count do you weigh salad and veg etc ? X

OP posts:
ChequerBoard · 25/03/2021 19:47

Yes, otherwise how did you know how many calories you have consumed?

Chocolateicelolly · 25/03/2021 19:48

That's what I thought, ahh it's stressful

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 25/03/2021 19:48

Salad leaves etc, no (other than when I had an eating disorder). More calorie-dense veg, yes.

ExplodingCarrots · 25/03/2021 19:50

Weigh everything. You'd be surprised how much it makes a difference.

PinkOnWednesday · 25/03/2021 19:56

honestly, I wouldn’t. It’s easy to get stressed abs addicted about it. At first maybe for a rough idea of quantities but the few calories difference it’ll make will not make any difference!

DIshedUp · 25/03/2021 19:58

No. Not salad or veg

Veg I take an estimate at e.g. 1 carrot, 1/2 courgette etc.

Once your weighing salad leaves thats very much eating disorder territory

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 25/03/2021 19:59

Yes, it can easily add a couple of hundred calories over a day, depending on what veggies you have. Lettuce isn't necessary tho. There's 14 kcal in 100 grams of iceberg lettuce and I doubt you'll have more than 300 grams in a day.

Nomoreporridge · 25/03/2021 20:02

Honestly- with salad leaves, I wouldn’t bother. You’d need about a tonne to even register 50 calories!

Vegetable - generally yes. They can sometimes be quite calorific, so it’s worth keeping an eye on how much.

However, I found weighing everything else to be really helpful. It’s really difficult to exercise portion control otherwise.

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 25/03/2021 20:02

I did initially. You can kind of estimate salad etc if you always buy the same pack and grab a handful when you have weighed it a few times so you don’t need to keep weighing it obsessively after the first few goes if that makes sense?

I do weigh vegetables though.

livingthegoodlife · 25/03/2021 20:03

Not lettuce. I usually go by the grams on the pack. So if recipe says 100g then I go for about half a bag. If whole lettuce then I guess.

But I do weigh other veg. Otherwise the ratios for the recipe are off.

LindaEllen · 25/03/2021 20:04

I honestly ignore things like salad and veg, perhaps add 50 cals combined at the end of the day for it. Fruit is more calorie heavy so I will add for that. On the whole though you soon just get used to reasonable portions so you don't have to be so worried about it anymore.

That’s not very nice. OP can post where she wants, you don’t have to open the thread, it was clearly titled after all.

I do old WW pro points where lots of veggies/salad/fruit are zero pointed to encourage healthy eating. DH does calorie counting and doesn’t count the zero rated ones.

Thehop · 25/03/2021 20:06

I’m only 5 weeks in so I’m weighing EVERYTHING, including lettuce.

Working though, I lost 18lb in 4 weeks

Minikievs · 25/03/2021 20:10

I don't weigh everything but I estimate it.
Eg one carrot or 100g lettuce
So I do log it but don't weigh it.
I use MFP

Chocolateicelolly · 25/03/2021 20:15

Thankyou for your replies, @Thehop wow that's amazing ! How many calories was your daily intake ? Xx

It will definitely add up to more than 50 if you're having some broccoli, some pepper, some tomato, some butternut squash etc. It soon adds up, depending on the amounts you have, which if you're calorie counting is probably a handsome amount.
SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/03/2021 20:21

At the beginning yes. Just to see the porrtion size. Now I don't do leaves, I don't weight cucumber (I am pretty good in getting right portion) justaybe tomatoes if unusual size. Peppers, radish, and other light salad veg is easy to learn how much after weighting few times.

I weight as pp dense veg. Carrots, butternut squash, cauliflower etc.

My roblem were portion sizes so I weighted everything to learn. Now I just test myself with these once in a while to see if I don't try to claim 200g is 100g again🙈

Also, since someone mentioned weight loss section. Have a look. Many lovely support threads if you fancy ir need it.

JRKismyhero · 25/03/2021 20:23

Yes I weigh absolutely everything

Thehop · 25/03/2021 20:25

@Chocolateicelolly I’m 41 and started at 19stone. Disgustingly obese so that’s why it’s falling off.

I’m trying to stick to 1200 but don’t beat myself up if o go to 1500. Im making an effort to walk more too. Not loads, but an effort.

I find staying quite low on carbs and eating plenty of protein rich food is helping...... and I had fish and chips one day! I’m making an effort to drink water too.

I googled “what is my basal metabolic rate” to find out what I was using, and bought a step counter that links to my fitness pal to tell me what I’m burning. I upload progress pictures there too to keep me motivated! Apparently you need to have a calorie deficit of 1000 calories a day to lose 2lb a week. That’s what I’m aiming for after this initial big loss.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 25/03/2021 20:31

I don't weigh low calorie veg like lettuce, I use cup measurements or if they're prepackaged I estimate half the package, a third and so on.

It's worked for me, I'm 8 months in and 58lb down with a daily average of 1400-1500 calories. I lose 1-2lb a week when I stick to the calorie counting and have gone from 233lb - 175lb.

Bairnsmum05 · 25/03/2021 20:32

@Thehop a calorie deficit of 1000 is massive. I am on 1700 a deficit of 250 and losing one pound a week. Slow but I don't want to starve and I want to integrate this as a way of life and not a quick fix. 😊

Oh here comes the thread police.

Move along.

I don't weigh salad or veg.

Alwaysandforeverhere · 25/03/2021 20:42

I guesstimate salad.

So I’ll say I had two cups of mushrooms when really it’s only six small ish mushrooms, I’ll say again two cups of lettuce when it isn’t. I’ll put. Awhole pepper when I hate one. I’d rather over estimate than under.

Thehop · 25/03/2021 20:43

@Bairnsmum05 oh that’s interesting! I am keeping up that deficit but I wonder if I’ve misunderstood? I did find out on google 😂
