Anti sickness medication

JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 09:35

Hi, sorry for positing in AIBU but I am desperate and needed the traffic.

14 weeks pregnant, third lot of anti sickness meds can someone please please tell me what I should ask for? I remember seeing a post about one that began with D and apparently the doctors don’t like to give it out because it’s expensive but I really am desperate I’ve got a 3 year old and I’m struggling.

Have tried cyclizine (worked for 3 weeks then stopped)

One that begins with P and it dissolves in your mouth (used as an anti psychotic in high doses apparently)

And I don’t know the third one now but if anyone can give me advise on what to ask for that would be really appreciated.

Promethazine was what eventually worked for me.
I so feel for you. Just thinking back to that nausea makes me feel anxious. It will pass but that doesn't help you right now! Get back to the doctor Flowers

One that begins with P and it dissolves in your mouth (used as an anti psychotic in high doses apparently) That would be prochlorperazine buccal tablets.
You could ask to try Ondansetron, Granisetron or Palonosetron.

Thank you so much both of you, it’s bloody horrible. I was like this with my first pregnancy but just slept a lot but obviously can’t do that now I just want to feel semi bloody normal!!!!

Now I've seen the other poster say Prochlorperazine I think it might have been that...it looks familiar. I know I tried a few.
Promethazine, cyclizine and something else. Good luck anyway! Hang in there.

TheGumption · 23/03/2021 10:25

Also I found the hyperemisis support threads on here really helpful. You can't really do anything practical to help each other but just being able to rant about it with women that get it made me feel a bit better.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/03/2021 10:29

I ended up on promethazine, and something else combined. Didn't want to take the 4th different kind because they had some suspicions it could cause complications or deformities (can't remember what specifically). That helped a bit. Hope it passes for you soon OP. I've just had my third 7 weeks ago and I honestly was losing my mind while pregnant, to the point I actually just wanted to die.

polkadotpixie · 23/03/2021 11:06

There's a new one called Xonvea. It's an existing medication with added vitamin B6. It's called Diclegis in the US so maybe that's the one you're thinking of

justwant2beamum · 23/03/2021 11:18

Prochloperazine tablets you swallow are what I got. I think they are the brand name for the drug stemitil. I also had a stemitil injection first. It helped mostly but I was still sick.

bloodyhell19 · 23/03/2021 11:21

Oh you have my sympathies! I was floored for weeks with HG. Eventually I went on Cariban 4x a day & literally took effect overnight. They said it could take a week but it was fairly instant for me. I hope you get sorted.

LucieStar · 23/03/2021 11:47

Prochlorperazine and if that doesn't help, ask for ondanestron. I took all 3 in combination (cyclizine with those two). I still struggled because I had HG, but it was so much better with than without the meds.

ClaraLane · 23/03/2021 11:48

Lots of suggestions on here but don’t forget to ask for a laxative at the same time because I found all the antiemetics I tried bunged me up and that was worse than the HG.

LucieStar · 23/03/2021 11:49

By the way many GPS will be reluctant to prescribe ondanestron as its expensive and usually a last resort type medication for severe pregnancy sickness. I had to push a little for it. But it did help.

IHateThinkingUpANewUsername · 23/03/2021 11:56

I think it’s ondansetron you’re after. My mum always thinks it starts with a D too, must be because it’s quite a hard D sound?
Anyway, miracle drug for me. Second pregnancy haven’t even been sick once after multiple hospitalisations in my first pregnancy.

gretagreengrapes · 23/03/2021 12:02

Ondansetron. They'll only give it past 12 weeks but I had no problem getting it from my GP. Get laxatives prescribed at the same time too as the side effect is constipation which just adds to feeling awful! I'm still using ondansetron at 36 weeks.

The prochlorperazine that dissolves in the mouth didnt work for me but the tablet version you swallow did so may be worth also trying that.

I was on ondanestron much sooner than 12 weeks. From about 8 weeks I think.

Honestly I could cry. Thank you so much everyone, I’ve been constipated for weeks and you’ve just made me realise it’s the tablets not just the pregnancy! I’ll get that sorted. I think it is Ondansetron, at my 12 week scan the midwife said if what I was taking stopped working then to ask for that she said it was the one she preferred to give to ladies as she knows it works.

My midwife is ringing me this afternoon she is fabulous and has made it clear I don’t have to suffer and she wants to help, I don’t think she can prescribe not sure but I know if I speak to her and get the advice I can just email my doctor and they can sort it straight away. They are fab like that but sometimes difficult. I was given a medication in my 1st pregnancy which the doctor told me was safe to take, I went to collect from the pharmacy and luckily the pharmacist knew me from work and he said not a chance am
I giving you that so that scares me massively also!! Thanks so much everyone I’m in tears, I’ve considered abortion of a much wanted and tried for baby because I simply cannot cope thank you again x

I considered abortion too and felt awful because of it but I just felt soooo ill and it was horrific. Hope the ondansetron works for you!
LucieStar · 23/03/2021 12:29

@JJSS123

I was hospitalised with HG at its worst (I'm towards the end of my pregnancy now and due any day). In my worst moment when I couldn't hold water down I also considered termination of a much wanted baby. It's such a dark, horrible place- your post really resonates with me. Hang in there and push for the right meds that work for you. Suck on ice lollies or ice cubes to stay hydrated if you can't swallow water. It does get easier I promise - mine passed completely by about 18 weeks but some feel better sooner than that. Thanks

justwant2beamum · 23/03/2021 15:27

@JJSS123 yep I had those thoughts too, I wanted it to end and the sickness to stop. It did and Id had a MMC. I'd now do anything to be hugging the toilet and feeling sick

JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 15:39

Just realised the tablets I’ve been taking are actually Ondansetron. So that’s worrying if they aren’t even working 😩.

@justwant2beamum I’ve had multiple miscarriages and MMC and even I can’t believe how I’m feeling mentally, I hope you are recovering well

Is it ondansetron in tablet form? They do a tongue film one if you can't keep the tablets down I had to have that first and move onto the tablet forms when it was under control
JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 15:54

Yeah 4mg tablet form. I’m going to ask if I can take these alongside the cyclizine because at one point that was taking it all away so maybe with the combination of the two it could help? I think a pp said they had taken the two

Yes you can take both together I'm prescribed cyclizine and ondansetron O 2 twice a day C 1 3 times a day I'm managing on just one cyclizine a day at moment at 30 weeks There is a light at the end I promise Thanks
RaspberrySocks · 23/03/2021 15:58

Ondanestron or however you spell it can cause birth defects like cleft lip and pallet

JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 15:59

@99redspottedducks
Amazing I’ve got some of them in so may take one now.

You’ve all really lifted my spirits when I thought I couldn’t carry on so thank you so much
