Anti sickness medication

Hi, sorry for positing in AIBU but I am desperate and needed the traffic.

14 weeks pregnant, third lot of anti sickness meds can someone please please tell me what I should ask for? I remember seeing a post about one that began with D and apparently the doctors don’t like to give it out because it’s expensive but I really am desperate I’ve got a 3 year old and I’m struggling.

Have tried cyclizine (worked for 3 weeks then stopped)

One that begins with P and it dissolves in your mouth (used as an anti psychotic in high doses apparently)

And I don’t know the third one now but if anyone can give me advise on what to ask for that would be really appreciated.

Also if anyone fancies a laugh,
I’ve been having to wear a mask to change nappies 😂

My dog came out from the kitchen saw me changing a nappy with a mask on, mustn’t of realised it was actually me that was near the youngest member of his pack and he bloody pounced on me 😂😂😂😂 he’s not got a nasty bone in him I think I really scared him!! 😂😂😂 I took it off straight away gave him some fuss said it’s your mum you silly lad and he was fine when he realised it was me but bloody hell 😂😂

I was given Doxylamine/pyridoxine (brand name: Xonvea) and it sorted me, once cyclizine gave up.

RaspberrySocks · 23/03/2021 16:02

How sick are you? I had cyclizine, it stopped me from being physically sick but I still had quite bad nausea but decided not to have any other drugs incase of problems with baby.... But this totally depends on how sick you are and whether you can put up with constant nausea or not. I found eating particular things and frequently helped get me through along with just the cyclizine.

Have you looked at the Pregnancy Sickness Support website? There is help out there.

Mishmased · 23/03/2021 16:08

Prochlorperazine did not work for me so I was prescribed Cariban. Had to take 2-3 Cariban for it to work during my really bad days.

LucieStar · 23/03/2021 16:56

@RaspberrySocks

Ondanestron or however you spell it can cause birth defects like cleft lip and pallet

My GP and consultant obstetrician told me the risks of this happening were extremely small.

Also I've just thought back to early pregnancy (not something I do lightly as I actually felt so ill I thought I might die at one point) and remembered the horrors of pregnancy vitamins. If youre trying to take something like Pregnacare with iron in, stop! Just take plain vit D and folic acid. This is on my local hospital guidelines for management of HG. Iron supplements are vile even when not pregnant. Things might not be perfect but they will definitely get better as pregnancy progresses.

JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 17:27

@gretagreengrapes yep I’m just taking basics I learnt that with the last pregnancy bloody awful! fab advise tho thank you.

I’m not being sick anywhere as much as what I was but the nausea is unbearable. I’ve had a lot of broken bones and would rather that ten times over, spoken to the midwife and she wants to see me tomorrow to check my urine and decide if I need hospital admission. I don’t think I need to be admitted but I will do anything for some relief from this, she also mentioned an anti sickness injection which I’ve had before but not for pregnancy and it was amazing so I’ll try anything at this point. Hopefully she will be able to jab me tomorrow. shes such a good midwife really thorough I really appreciate her

I'm on a combo of 3: ondansetron, metoclopramide and cyclizine. There is some evidence that ondansetron can cause birth defects so they no longer like prescribing it in the first trimester but will do for severe cases. I see you're already on ondansetron so definitely push for a combo!

youremyperson · 23/03/2021 17:33

Domperidone?

YouBoggleMyMind · 23/03/2021 17:35

Dunno if the other one on this list helps or not.

Anti sickness medication
JJSS123 · 23/03/2021 17:35

Yeah the doctor mentioned she wouldn’t like to give it to me in the first trimester I’ve only had it for about a week and I’m 14 weeks tomorrow so hopefully should be ok?

I’ll add domperidone to my list thank you

If it's more nausea now then I recommend metoclopramide. It saved me

monkeycat · 23/03/2021 17:52

I took ondasatron during both my pregnancies , it was the only medication that worked for me. The injection is definitely way more effective than the tablets but obviously you can't keep going to hospital for injections in reality.

I also had cyclazine which just made be extremely sleepy , anti-emetics are sedatives. Also tried stematil which worked for about a week then stopped.

Really don't feel bad about taking meds - you just have to do whatever it takes to get through this.

I'm sure you have tried loads of different things to help but the main thing for me was to not get hungry . I ended up grazing all day and it was the only thing , other than the meds, that helped.

@Catsarerubbish

I’m not a medical expert but I would suggest that if you have any cats you get rid of them ASAP! They are well known for causing nausea and vomiting just from looking at them! When I got pregnant with my first DC I threw my 3 in the wheely bin as advised by my midwife. Best of luck with it #RIPsmokey #RIPmittens #RIPcyril
Wtf?? Confused

Anyway OP I just wanted to say as a fellow HG sufferer, contact Pregnancy Sickness Support for advice and support. They have a peer mentoring scheme which I am using now with my 2nd HG pregnancy. Like many pps I seriously considered termination of my first (planned) pregnancy because I was so ill and so depressed. This time around I've avoided hospitalisation through medicating earlier and being more assertive in ensuring I get the support I need and using the peer mentoring scheme has helped protect my mental health so I haven't got anywhere near as low as last time either. All the best, at 14 weeks hopefully you will start to see a lot of natural improvement over the next few weeks too.
