Stole my card and spent all my money - advice?

PearlescentIridescent · 20/03/2021 16:47

Has anyone had experience with losing a bank card and someone spending their money on contactless? How long does it take to get the money back? Do they try and get out of getting your money back? (Barclays)

Currently on hold with the bank, can't check balance so don't know how much has gone but my tesco shop (through Pay+) declined....

That's my tax credit money that I rely on to feed my kids. Bastards.

@SilverDoe Are you the OP then? Confused

Monsterjam · 20/03/2021 17:00

Have you reported card lost / stolen?

PandaFluff · 20/03/2021 17:02

Name change fail?

Just keep on hold to the bank they will help

LIZS · 20/03/2021 17:05

When did you notice it was lost. Are you sure it was all contactless transactions if you have not checked your account?

greyspottedgoose · 20/03/2021 17:06

I dread losing my card it's so scary how easy it is now to pay for things, hopefully the banml can help

Givemeabreak88 · 20/03/2021 17:08

Don’t you have online banking then?

Lougle · 20/03/2021 17:08

If it's Barclays, you need to turn off contactless payments in the app immediately, or they'll hold you responsible for the transactions because you were aware it's been stolen.

Whammyyammy · 20/03/2021 17:09

I dont think the bank refund any payments made before the card was reported lost just after.

What with the higher limit contactless due soon...losing cards could be costly

bestbefore · 20/03/2021 17:12

They do refund all "stolen" payments, my sisters card was stolen and we were too busy reporting the break in to immediately cancel the card, by the time we did they'd spent about £400 and she got it all back. Soo annoying though, I think it took about a week. The spends were so different to her usual pattern they should have asked for a pin anyway.

Lougle · 20/03/2021 17:14

DH's card was cloned and we had our entire account wiped. We got it all back. But it was very easy to see that we never shop where they shopped.

diamondpony80 · 20/03/2021 17:18

I didn’t lose my bank card but I did get money stolen from my bank account through online transactions. To this day I don’t know how it happened - the only time my card was ever out of my sight was at a restaurant, but I also shop online a lot. I knew how much and where the money was being spent by checking my online banking. I cancelled the card immediately, had to put in a police report and eventually did get refunded by the bank. About €800 (was an Irish bank account)

Tablegs · 20/03/2021 17:26

Tell the police and get a crime reference number.

Livelovebehappy · 20/03/2021 17:33

It takes a while currently. I work in a bank, and fraud is rampant atm, which means lots of delays. Although I guess each bank is different.

Jaxhog · 20/03/2021 17:35

As long as you reported it as soon as you realized, the bank should refund you. They will also stop the card.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 20/03/2021 17:35

Definitely turn off via online banking if you can, that's a really useful feature from a lot of banks nowadays.

Longdistance · 20/03/2021 17:39

When funds were taken from my dms account with Barclays they sent loads of statements. I’m talking about 6 with different transactions. It was 6 fraudulent transactions for PS or done such gaming bollocks. She used an in store cash machine weirdly and that’s when it was caught my dms card and pin.
It may take about five days unfortunately Sad

PricklesAndSpikes · 20/03/2021 17:50

Did you lose it or was it stolen, you have mentioned both? If it was stolen, do you know who stole it and have you reported it to the police? If you lost it, do you know roughly when / where? And if so, how quickly did you report it to the bank? Both those things could make a difference as to whether you get your money back.

OscarWildesCat · 20/03/2021 17:51

It’ll take time but you’ll get it back.

AnotherKrampus · 20/03/2021 17:54

Barclays has been super good with me both for my personal and business banking account when my cards got cloned and suppliers tried to steal/rip me off. Their fraud team is pretty on the ball. I got every penny back. With some payments, it took a few days.

makingmiracles · 20/03/2021 17:54

For future reference with my bank at least(Lloyds) you can ring them and ask to issue you a non contactless, i presume most banks with oblige.

I did this when contactless came in and I’m glad i did as the limit is £45 isn’t it? Which means someone can wipe £135 from your account in one day. I also don’t have that to lose week by week so non contactless was a must have for me.

Hope you get your money back successfully soon op.

sneakysnoopysniper · 20/03/2021 17:59

Someone got access to the details of my Paypal debit card and used it to withdraw £300 from my linked bank account. They then attempted to withdraw £900 more but the bank blocked it pretty quickly. It took a few days to return the money to my account. Paypal quickly blocked the old card and issued me a new one and made me change my login. All in all it took about 14 days to sort everything out as Paypal limited my account as part of the process. So I had to go through some security checks.

The card can only access money in sterling and fortunately most of the money in my Paypal account is in US dollars. I no longer link the card to my bank account . I just make sure there is enough in sterling to cover the purchase whenever I use it.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/03/2021 18:01

I'm not surprised fraud is so high, with the new higher limit and infrequency of pin requests. I'm sure I can go for weeks on contactless only. The limits going up to £100 soon too.

Hope your bank can help you OP. Do you have another card you can use while it's sorted out? if you don’t, apologies for the unhelpful comment, but as a warning to everyone, you really need a second method of payment in case things like this happen or there's a problem with your bank. Saves you from being stuck when things go wrong.

UnderwaterSymphony · 20/03/2021 18:11

Call the Fraud Line at your bank, contactlless money doesn't always go out straight away, transactions often show as pending for a couple of days particularly on the weekend.

Your contactless will have a limit so they may not be able to get everything (ours is 30 pounds for pin requests).

SofiaMichelle · 20/03/2021 18:21

I thought you only got back anything spent after you report it stolen?
