Re shop openings on the 12th April

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and think it’s a really really stupid idea that they are planning on opening shops half way during the half term. I work in a clothing retail and I’m itching to go back to work after being furloughed since Christmas Eve but I think this is by far the stupidest idea Bojo has suggested. I think it would be better to wait a week and ease into it as kids will be at school.

Half term ends on the 11th where I live, I assume this is also true of many other areas.

delilahbucket · 16/03/2021 22:26

The kids will be back at school.

stressbucket1 · 16/03/2021 22:26

Same for our area too. Schools are all back on 12th April

CoRhona · 16/03/2021 22:27

Mon 12th April is slap bang in the middle of the Easter holidays here (SE England).

It's yet another ridiculously ill thought out plan.

mum2jakie · 16/03/2021 22:29

Delay any longer and there won't be any shops left to reopen!

Same here, I just thought the Easter holidays were the same everywhere like Christmas 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s the day school starts back here (NW)

BramStoker · 16/03/2021 22:31

Schools go back on 12th April where I live

The Easter weekend is in the middle of the 2 week school holiday

cardibach · 16/03/2021 22:32

Easter holidays vary, Easter can be at the start, middle or end. OP is unreasonable in referring to it as ‘half term’. The confusion of this really fucks me off. It’s simple. It’s been the same for donkeys. 3 terms, holidays Christmas, Easter and Summer. Half terms fall between those. This is marginally less irritating than people referring to eg October half term as ‘the end of term’

Blessex · 16/03/2021 22:33

It is done on a strict 5 week timetable as explained by Chris Whitty.

maddening · 16/03/2021 22:33

I don't think that it will increase cases, we had shops open in the summer and there was no surge then, plus they expect to have vaccinated 32mill by then. It is not a high risk for infection providing measures are in place.

TheRaccoon · 16/03/2021 22:33

I think we’d have waited long enough by then.

cardibach · 16/03/2021 22:34

Although, in response to the OPs comment, Christmas holidays aren’t all the same either. How have you missed this basic knowledge?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 16/03/2021 22:34

@Timeisavirtue we often have different Christmas holidays in the North too, obviously covering the important days but breaking up earlier. I work in travel, there's always variations across the country.

However I would have throught the week containing good Friday followed by the week containing easter Monday is the most obvious choice for schools at Easter. Hopefully most are back on the 12th.

icecreamgirl94 · 16/03/2021 22:34

I don’t see what difference a week makes as the kids are back at school and mixing anyway. I don’t think it’ll make much difference either way in terms of how busy the shops get.

IdblowJonSnow · 16/03/2021 22:34

Kids are back at school by then in Yorkshire.

Blessex · 16/03/2021 22:35

He explained why 5 weeks too. He said during that 5 weeks they will be able to assess the impact of the change they had made 5 weeks previous eg 8 March - kids back the school. I mean however you feel it is meticulously planned.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 16/03/2021 22:35

It's not half term though. Half term is in October, February and May.

Glad it's not just me that finds this irritating!
RampantIvy · 16/03/2021 22:38

The children go back to school after their two week Easter holidays (not half term Grin) on 12th April round here.

Our local authority always sets the Easter holidays with Easter in the middle weekend.

kowari · 16/03/2021 22:38

I think it's good if they open while children are still off. Parents may need to buy their children clothing and shoes, especially school shoes. I think it's better to spread that over a week than a weekend.

Well, as reasoned above - a week either side and it's holidays somewhere. They can't delay it just to please a few mums.

PinkGiraffe1 · 16/03/2021 22:44

My child's school and that of my friends are both back 19 April. Both North West and different counties.

Not in Leeds - they go back on 19th April here.
