Re shop openings on the 12th April

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and think it’s a really really stupid idea that they are planning on opening shops half way during the half term. I work in a clothing retail and I’m itching to go back to work after being furloughed since Christmas Eve but I think this is by far the stupidest idea Bojo has suggested. I think it would be better to wait a week and ease into it as kids will be at school.

My home town has had 27 shops shut down in the last year. Soon a busy town will be a thing of the past. Those hanging by a thread are desperate for the day to come when they can have customers again.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 17/03/2021 09:41

Back 19th in Kent too. I might go to Bluewater one of the days just for the novelty value.

notacooldad · 17/03/2021 09:44

Same here, I just thought the Easter holidays were the same everywhere like Christmas
Even in my small town Christmas dates aren't the same! There was different breakup and going back days!

notacooldad · 17/03/2021 09:50

And calling the Easter holidays “half term” is very irritating. It’s a factual inaccuracy. It’s not just a different term for the same thing.
😂😂😂😂😂
Its not issue of the post though.
Christ on a bike, people frothing because the op used the wrong phase while make a point about something else!

@BarbaraofSeville

I don't think they were thinking about your childcare arrangements when they devised the roadmap OP.

On the matter of school terms in Yorkshire, I looked this up yesterday, because I'm very close to Wakefield, Leeds, Kirklees and Bradford LAs and have a few days off work just before Easter and wanted to know if I could go out for a walk without the country parks I will then be allowed to drive to being overly busy. I think three of the above four are on holiday from 2nd April, and only Wakefield taking the two weeks straddling Easter.

I don’t have an issue with childcare.... I have an issue with the hoards of people that will come to the shop with thier whole family and some of them don’t social distance and nor do they wear masks.

@DavidsSchitt

Waiting a week simply because you want the whole of your Easter holidays off will further damage the economy and mean that everything else waits another week. Where I am schools will be back in that day.

You honestly don't sound like you're "itching" to go back.

You've had plenty of time to watch Chris Whitty explain why there are 5 weeks between each phase of reopening. Why haven't you?

I am itching to go back! I’ve worked in the same store for 12 years so I know the ins and outs of retail. I haven’t listened to any of the updates because quite frankly I’m fed up listening to them. I hear the bits I need to hear. Okay so they’ve decided to open based on thier timeline but I honestly think it’s a bad idea especially in places where schools don’t return until the 19th. I was at work when we reopened last June and it was like people had never been to a shop before. The stupidity of Some people has exceeded my expectations, I don’t have very High ones. Yes I know that shops are struggling but if people come out in full force and it forces another lockdown businesses won’t be able to survive another lockdown.

Eh? how one earth is that even possible?

Tbh you're not coming across as being particularly clued up on stuff, you may have missed that by today over 25 million will have had their first jab and will be more than 3 weeks away from that by the time shops open plus all the other millions with some of the first dose protection and all the experts agree that transmission will be much reduced by then.

minniemoocher · 17/03/2021 10:29

School goes back on the 12th here

MissDollyMix · 17/03/2021 10:38

My children’s term starts on 12 April. Either way they’re not exactly champing at the bit to hit up Zara so I don’t think it’s going to make the slightest bit of difference. If anything it’s going to be the areas where children are at school and parents are free to go shopping that are going to see the biggest increase in footfall.

DavidsSchitt · 17/03/2021 11:35

Funny how the two posts that suggested you might not be itching to go back because you want the holidays off are the only two that touched a nerve then! Interesting 🤔

"I haven’t listened to any of the updates because quite frankly I’m fed up listening to them."

Make your mind up, you've either listened or you haven't. It was made quite clear why there will be 5 weeks between each stage. It has nothing to do with school holidays and quite honestly, it is going to be complete different to last time we reopened non-essential retail.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/03/2021 11:36

It’s half way through the holidays for us, but I’m pretty sure more places that not (in England) go back on the 12th.

Lemons1571 · 17/03/2021 12:23

It’s school shoes that are impossible to do online. With somewhere like Clarks you have to pay for a range of sizes and styles upfront then try them all on at home. Hardly practical to spend several hundred pounds up front, to order 12 shoes in 3 different styles because you don’t know what size / width/ style will fit.

SleepingStandingUp · 17/03/2021 13:00

I agree Lemons but given a choice between too tight or supermarket I'd buy supermarket shoes they can try on

But really schools should have suspended / relaxed uniform rules. Would plain not logo'd bottoms and tops and enclosed toe shoes be so awful for a year?

Mylovelyhorsee · 17/03/2021 13:08

@Timeisavirtue

First off Christmas holidays aren’t the same everywhere either.

Also we need to get shoes back open and the economy moving again!

ConstanceGracy · 17/03/2021 13:17

@CoRhona

Mon 12th April is slap bang in the middle of the Easter holidays here (SE England).

It's yet another ridiculously ill thought out plan.

I’m south east and lots of schools here will already be back on the 12th .
