Why are all architects twats?

JustFromExperience · 09/03/2021 21:36

Just that really.

GENERALLY They seem to be jumped up, know it all, entitled, twats. The worst person to have to deal with on site. Separated from reality. The person that no one on site wants to deal with or respects.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

(I have a lot of experience of working with architects)

I have never forgiven the architectural profession for 1960s brutalist style (if you can call it that).

Never dealt with any professionally though.

NovemberR · 09/03/2021 21:57

I lurve George Clarke.

Does he count?

(I have no experience of working with architects)

NormaFoster · 09/03/2021 21:59

I'm not a twat

Saz12 · 09/03/2021 21:59

We had one recently for a small project on our home.

He was utterly, UTTERLY crap, to the point I considered complaining to governing body. His drawings were completely wrong - I had to point this out twice, explain his error and re-measure (sending him a video of my doing so), before he’d believe me.

WhoAreYah · 09/03/2021 21:59

I have yet to find one who actually has an idea that I haven’t put in their hand for them.

They always take forever to reply.

If I didn’t need one for structural plans I wouldn’t use one as I’ve done all the bloody work anyway.

Einszwei · 09/03/2021 22:00

As an architect, I agree with you! In my experience at least 75% of the profession are egotistical twats.

There are a few good ones out there though!

Saz12 · 09/03/2021 22:00

... by “wrong” I don’t mean a few cm - it was a wall 450cm long he swore blind was 310cm long.

Liquorishtoffee · 09/03/2021 22:01

Hahahahaha🤣

Dad was an engineer - if he came home in a grump... ‘architect?’ ‘Yes... architect...’

I work in a field where I do work with a lot of them. Yes, there’s a type isn’t there? I’ve heard some funny stories about rather precious behaviour in some forms!

Pancake4life · 09/03/2021 22:01

agreed huge egos and a lot of shit work

Cocomarine · 09/03/2021 22:02

@NormaFoster

I'm not a twat
Ah, I get your user name now 👍🏻
Wilkolampshade · 09/03/2021 22:02

We've had to deal with 2, on two separate projects. One terrific, (professional, available, informative) one ABSOLUTELY awful,... arrogant, deceptive and tone deaf.
I guess like all peeps, some good, some bad. 🤷‍♀️

Reinventinganna · 09/03/2021 22:03

My Dh is an architect, he’s lovely.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 09/03/2021 22:03

Ours way shite too. Our extension plan got rejected because the roof want right and for life nor money would he return calls to sort it.
Down to the last hour before time ran out for free amendments and I was in FB begging for an architect. Got my ass saved by a FB friend who I couldn't remember how I knew and he simply amended the pitch and emailed me new plan. Didn't know he was an architect.

jakeyboy1 · 09/03/2021 22:04

I have one for our building project at home and he is lovely and v down to Earth.

However.... I work in corporate real estate and the corporate architects are truly special. I mean they are not just architects.... they are artists, community creators, marketing experts, facilities managers, surveyors and literally any other skill set you can imagine - in their opinion. Grin

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 09/03/2021 22:04

Oh yes - afraid I do agree.....we got totally fleeced by a guy who designed a project that, when it was costed, came to SEVEN times the budget we had said we had. These days I just go to a surveyor who specialises in design and ask them to do it....architects are not worth the money I’m afraid!

OhCaptain · 09/03/2021 22:04

Yeah complete twats and they’re all getting less talented with time, apparently!

CuriousSeal · 09/03/2021 22:04

My DH is an architect. I must admit that he is never in a hurry to turn things around unless there's a specific deadline. However, he's great at his job and is able to provide creative solutions to his clients that they had never considered. A lot of clients come to him after working with bad architects mind you. Engineers often recommend my DH because he is one of the few they seem capable of measuring accurately in our county!

Cocomarine · 09/03/2021 22:06

Going to throw out a theory without having any proper data to substantiate it...

  • you need good grades to get on the course, good academics correlate with well off families
  • you need confidence to go after a sought after course, confidence correlates with well off families
  • you generally need family financial support to get through an unusually long course... you see where I’m going with this!

I’m going to theorise that the profession has more “white male middle class privilege arrogance” in it than many others.

#notallarchitects

Springyspring281 · 09/03/2021 22:08

My Dh is an architect. He can be a twat but not to his clients!! Only to me :(

I think there is some mega-ego in designing buildings that will outlive the person who designed them. Some architects have a messiah complex and think they are beyond trendy. I think those ones are twats (dont get me started on the twirly moustaches).

Lots of people want to be architects... even Brad Pitt!! He is obsessed with eco-archiecture and knew an architect I used to work for. I think hed be in the laid back hippy camp if he ever trained!!

AnneElliott · 09/03/2021 22:08

DH would agree with you - he's building control. He's always moaning that they get planning for something that can't be built and then bugger off and leave it to everyone else to sort it.

Agree it's likely to be a white make privilege thing.

sweetnessnfight · 09/03/2021 22:08

I work with architects daily from the land buying side and we think they're great. Decent people. Site workers always spot architects errors and think they are rubbish at their job but I have no complaints.

Silurian · 09/03/2021 22:09

The one we’re dealing with for an extension is great and fast becoming a friend.

SaucyHorse · 09/03/2021 22:12

My mum's an architect and consequently so are a lot of her university friends. I think they're all lovely. But obviously I don't work with them, maybe they are annoying in a professional context.. I'd bet anything my mum isn't, though.

DeeplyMovingExperience · 09/03/2021 22:12

Shit. We've hired an architect. My alarm bells are going off.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/03/2021 22:13

MiL is an architect and seems alright. I've got a couple of acquaintances too who are architects, one is admittedly something of a twat, the other is lovely.
