Why are all architects twats?

JustFromExperience · 09/03/2021 21:36

Just that really.

GENERALLY They seem to be jumped up, know it all, entitled, twats. The worst person to have to deal with on site. Separated from reality. The person that no one on site wants to deal with or respects.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

(I have a lot of experience of working with architects)

Ha! I’ve not really thought of it in the “white male privilege” sense but I think it may be a thing.

I’ve always done the measured sketches myself and then got a technician to pop them onto CAD - much cheaper than an arch and they don’t ignore what you ask for and give you something different. I’m not usually one to diss another profession but it does feel like a lot of what architects do is money for old rope.

Gosh that was cathartic!

Hoppinggreen · 09/03/2021 22:16

I used to work in an industry that had me sober most of my time with Architects and Interior designers. There was a certain amount of white male privilege amongst the Architects but they were generally ok and I really liked some of them. The Designers were worse, I’m not sure if I disliked the Bitchy Gay ones or the Rich Wives doing it as a hobby business more. To be fair I did meet quite a few I liked as well

Liquorishtoffee · 09/03/2021 22:16

Oh I hope people with architect loved-ones aren’t feeling a bit under attack! But they can be a bit... precious!

Liquorishtoffee · 09/03/2021 22:18

I don’t get it being a white make thing. Our architect colleagues are a variety of races and of both sexes.

Goldenbear · 09/03/2021 22:19

I'm married to one, he is not an 'extension' or 'loft conversion' architect though so he wouldn't be debating measurements with a homeowner!

I would disagree with the comments above, he designed our extension (only one he'd work on) and the builders had no problems building it!

Springyspring281 · 09/03/2021 22:20

I dont get to make any decorating decisions in our house unfortunately!! Dh will always have the last say on carpets, curtains, lamps etc... and dh is minimalist so no bookshelves etc...

PatchworkElmer · 09/03/2021 22:20

Don’t be daft. It’s like any other profession- good ones, and bad ones. If you have serious concerns then report them to the ARB.

2021Vision · 09/03/2021 22:22

Gosh yes I agree OP. Charge you a fortune, throw their toys out of the pram if you want something they don't like. They act like it's their own house they are building and you are just funding it!

NothingIsWrong · 09/03/2021 22:23

As a structural engineer, we are natural foes. Luckily I get to say "yeah but gravity, mate" and I then win the argument.

Handsnotwands · 09/03/2021 22:24

Yup. Ego with a dollop of artistic temperament

Liquorishtoffee · 09/03/2021 22:25

My dad used to tell them ‘yes you could do that... but it wouldn’t stay up...’

adeleh · 09/03/2021 22:25

My brother is an architect. He’s not twatty at all. He’s lovely.

Conkergame · 09/03/2021 22:26

I dated one for a bit, he was a twat! Very up himself but also insecure at the same time.

Goldenbear · 09/03/2021 22:26

It takes 5-7 years to qualify as an Architect and it is seriously difficult to qualify. It is frustrating when people don't equate the expertise and design side of things to the money they are willing to pay. Our experience is that people think you can knock up a drawing for them overnight and that is the extent of the effort!!

chalkyc2 · 09/03/2021 22:27

Oh 😦

I'm an architect.

I don't do small residential projects though (actually I don't really design individual buildings either...go a scale up...)

Most of my work colleagues and friends are super hard working, dedicated and amazing. It's a tough gig (partic as a woman or a minority) and comparative to other professions the pay is pretty terrible.

Sorry on behalf of my rubbish idiot colleagues who are not performing....😬

cormorantes · 09/03/2021 22:29

Arrogant and supercilious are the words I would use ( that's the ones in my extended family)

YoComoManzanas · 09/03/2021 22:30

I used to be an architect. There is a higher percentage of white male privilege. But there are lovely, clued up ones too.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 09/03/2021 22:33

@Cocomarine

Going to throw out a theory without having any proper data to substantiate it...
  • you need good grades to get on the course, good academics correlate with well off families
  • you need confidence to go after a sought after course, confidence correlates with well off families
  • you generally need family financial support to get through an unusually long course... you see where I’m going with this!

I’m going to theorise that the profession has more “white male middle class privilege arrogance” in it than many others.

#notallarchitects

This hadn’t actually occurred to me but you could be on to something...

🤣😂🤣😂🤣
ScarfaceCwaw · 09/03/2021 22:35

We hired a double-handed female practice to design for us. They did a great job and added some really good ideas.

vimtosogood · 09/03/2021 22:35

I've always found them polite enough when working for them.

ArcheryAnnie · 09/03/2021 22:36

My first office job was working for lovely architects.

However, the one I've dealt with recently - the epitome of that saying "Lord, give me the confidence of a mediocre white man". Ego, ego, ego, and didn't listen to the client at all. Was more interested in building a monument to himself than a building which would serve it's purpose.

YANBU at all, OP. YANBU.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 09/03/2021 22:37

You’ve been unlucky OP if you’ve only found the twatty ones, there’s lots of lovely ones out there too! I often work with big practice architects and know who the good ones are now after years in the industry - generally the ones who can listen!

WizardOfAus · 09/03/2021 22:38

@sweetnessnfight

I work with architects daily from the land buying side and we think they're great. Decent people. Site workers always spot architects errors and think they are rubbish at their job but I have no complaints.
Well, as long as you’re not affected by their errors and it’s just the site workers to have to clean up their shit... so who cares, right?!?!
CuriousSeal · 09/03/2021 22:39

A lot of people think they can knock up a drawing on their own. I've seen some people's attempts and they're usually horrendous. The world would be a much uglier place without architects.
