To think drinking alone is utterly boring?

The idea of a few glasses (bottle) of wine on a childfree night always appeals to me but then when I actually do it I find myself sitting and mindlessly staring at the tv, twiddling my thumbs, looking for something interesting to do but can't decide on anything. I feel less relaxed with it.

AIBU?

Still manage to force it down though 😂

Ooooh YABU!!! I love a couple of glasses of wine, or a couple of whiskies on my own with a few snacks, and a good horror film, with one cat on my lap and the other on the couch! I do this once or twice a month, when DH goes to bed at 9pm - ish.

I do love evenings with him too of course, but like one to myself sometimes!

The most boring thing for me, is not drinking alone, but going out to the pub (or a party) with a teetotaller. They just clock watch from the minute you get there, and want to leave after about an hour and a quarter, (usually by 9.00pm-9.15pm,) because they're starting to get 'tired....'

Totally UGrin
I’m enjoying my child free night alone with wine and it’s great knowing no one will be looking to be fed in the morning (including the dog who goes to ex with the kids!)
Seriously though I get the feeling a bit lost when you are alone but I say go with it - find something on Netflix or chat on MN- I would prefer to be drinking with someone but I’ll still enjoy my wine alone.

rawalpindithelabrador · 27/02/2021 20:09

doing anything alone is fabulous. YABU

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 20:10

YABU. I love chilling with a glass of wine when I’m on my own. Total relaxation!

LegendDairy · 27/02/2021 20:11

I prefer cooking alone with a drink rather than just drinking of an evening.

sbhydrogen · 27/02/2021 20:11

If you'd enabled voting it'd be 99% YABU (because there's always one) 🤣

lockdownalli · 27/02/2021 20:12

YABU. I do really like my own company though Smile

mineofuselessinformation · 27/02/2021 20:14

Nothing better than a glass of wine in the bath on your own! Smile

HangOnToYourself · 27/02/2021 20:14

YABVU I love my weekend bottle of wine and a film. I am single tho so I suppose I am used to my own company.

lovelilies · 27/02/2021 20:15

I agree, would rather have a brew (tea) 😆

georgarina · 27/02/2021 20:15

YANBU

I used to occasionally like it when I got home from work but now can't stand it - just makes me headachey and tired especially after working from home all day.

Soundbyte · 27/02/2021 20:15

YABU and I absolutely can’t wait to be able to have a few drinks and listen to music, dancing badly around my kitchen again 🤣

FrankButchersDickieBow · 27/02/2021 20:15

Sorry, another yabu.

I love it when my husband is on nights and daughter is asleep.

Crack open a bottle of delicious red and watch whatever I want in blissful peace, having a cuddle with our dog.

LucilleBluth · 27/02/2021 20:16

I’ve just had a glass of wine in the bath. I also love listening to music and having a wine while DH is playing video games (he’s 46 😀)

Embrace it op.

ifyourehappyandyouknowsimon · 27/02/2021 20:17

I'm single and used to my own company as well, I love being alone, sitting with a book, binge watching a series, stuffing my face 😂. I love a drink too, however, just can't get into it myself, for one I feel so guilty as if it's something I shouldn't be doing for some reason. I feel I'm fine once I'm drunk but those few glasses in between when I feel a bit tipsy I just feel very deflated and blah.

YABU. It's one of the best things ever.

TheWaif · 27/02/2021 20:18

I can only enjoy it if I'm chatting on WhatsApp, Facebook and Tinder whilst listening to music or watching a podcast Grin

ifyourehappyandyouknowsimon · 27/02/2021 20:18

Almost feel lonely even though I don't feel like that any other time. It's very strange.

I second the music option. A few wines and a YouTube 90’s rabbit hole is one of my favourite ways to spend an evening.

userxx · 27/02/2021 20:24

Drinking wine alone is rubbish, makes me miss my friends 😞

JustAnotherOldMan · 27/02/2021 20:26

Alcohol is a mood enhancer, so if you feel a bit down, alcohol will just enhance that and vice versa , if you’re in a happy/ relaxed mode alcohol will enhance that

ifyourehappyandyouknowsimon · 27/02/2021 20:30

@JustAnotherOldMan I don't necessarily believe that. There's been many a time I've been in a very bad place/low mood and alcohol has brought out the carefree, fun me and allowed me to laugh for a few hours with my friends (back in the day) and vice Versa there's been times I've been in an amazing mood and behaved like a loony, just depends.

I agree, I live alone and never drink alone because I have learnt from experience that it makes me feel meh and sad. For me drinking is all about spending time with friends and family.

This means that I have spent most of 2020-21 being teetotal - I thought I might feel really healthy as a result but sadly I just compensate for the lack of booze by eating too many biscuits.

Drink faster 😂 I’m an enabler. Joking 🙃 I think there is a bit of a stigma around drinking alone as if you are some kind of alcoholic saddo. It’s also easy to slip into drinking every day as a wind down so my compromise is Saturday night- a few glasses of wine with some chocolate or crisps and I associate it more as a nice treat rather than a wind down, forget the day type of thing.
