This is just so depressing. I understand it couldn't be shown to be premeditated and therefore murder, but how can it be such a short sentence in view of the fact she was found with keys in hand trying to escape and it wasn't therefore something that happened in the space of a few seconds? Manslaughter sentences can still be hefty - I just can't understand this. Just another devastating end of a life for a woman at the hands of a man, with another miserably short sentence for the perpetrator. Awful. Just awful.

It's absolutely disgusting how this murderer has been portrayed. It isn't unusual though. He attacked her upstairs, she got away, he followed her down and continued his attack. He broke her neck with his bare hands. He's an utter fucking animal. Another womans life is taken and the justice robbed from her.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/02/2021 18:51

And they threaten 10 years if you lie about which country you've flow into the UK from.

PandoraP · 18/02/2021 18:52

This story shocked me so much I have no words!

Sparklesocks · 18/02/2021 18:54

It was barely two weeks into lockdown and they had a paid off mortgage and £148k in savings, so I don’t buy that he was driven by ‘money worries’ and the stress of lockdown.

LouHotel · 18/02/2021 18:55

5 years! It was horrendous enough that it was manslaughter. But 5 years.

A womens life really is viewed as worthless, this will be the precedent for all DV assaults in the last year. The lockdown defense.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/02/2021 18:56

If he wanted to go down the insanity route then life in a psychiatric hospital should have been the minimum sentence given.

Imissthegym · 18/02/2021 18:56

This is local to me and the press write ups are horrendous. They portray him as a victim.

What that poor woman went through at the end, and very likely throughout their long marriage really doesn’t bear thinking about.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 18/02/2021 18:56

She must have been so frightened. Sad

Wishitsnows · 18/02/2021 18:57

A woman's life is just not valued. Can't believe his ridiculous reasons for 'snapping' were believed

HeidiHaughton · 18/02/2021 18:58

I doubt this was the first time he 'snapped'. The poor lady.

AnotherKrampus · 18/02/2021 18:59

This story really depressed me, mainly due to the shocking media coverage! Sad

NiceGerbil · 18/02/2021 19:01

YANBU I was horrified when I read this on the news and how the crime was described.

His snapping involved attacking her and then when she got away chasing her to finish the job.

Fucks sake

Vallmo47 · 18/02/2021 19:01

Shocking!!! Like another poster said, you get more for breaking covid rules. Hmm

Flapjak · 18/02/2021 19:03

Can we get this reviewed by contacting the AG, this is as bad as the men that accidently strangle women during sex

timetest · 18/02/2021 19:04

Outrageous. His defence doesn’t hold water. She was running away, she had the car keys in her hand. 10 years for flying in without quarantine, 5 years for murder.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 18/02/2021 19:04

There is a Twitter account called 'Counting Dead Women'. Imagine a world in which a social media account exists to count and document the instances of women murdered at the hands of men, that seemingly no one else cares about. And it reports constantly.

The fact that such an account exists is shocking on its own. It's full of stories that are just like this. The stories it links to perpetually play down the actions of the men who murdered them. It's every, single, day. Every other week, it seems, some man is using 'rough sex' as a reason for killing us. I, personally, have feared for my life at the hands of men. And that more than once. Were this being perpetrated against any other group, there would be an outcry.

Yet - fucking radio silence. Women are murdered, brutally, horribly, on a daily basis. Some are not even reported in the media. And no one bats an eyelid.

Why? WHY?

ImAllOut · 18/02/2021 19:04

And when a member of the Senedd disagreed she appeared in court because she may have prejudiced the jury...

Murder doesn’t have to be premeditated in this country. The facts of the case absolutely point to a murder charge.
However he pleaded that his mental state was such that he shouldn’t be held fully accountable for murder. The jury and the judge apparently believed him.

This is a well/balanced thread from a feminist lawyer - although she hasn’t yet commented on the sentence.

LadyJaye · 18/02/2021 19:04

I've just the report in the Guardian and the description of her injuries is horrific.

I'm not squeamish or easily unsettled, but the level of violence involved in her death is truly shocking.

GreenSeaGlass · 18/02/2021 19:05

He also said he’d planned to kill himself after he killed her. How was that not premeditated?

Gil55 · 18/02/2021 19:06

Fucking savage. And his sentence sums up everything that's wrong with our legal system. Yet another woman dead at the hands of a man.

StrangerHereMyself · 18/02/2021 19:07

@GreenSeaGlass

He also said he’d planned to kill himself after he killed her. How was that not premeditated?
Premeditation is irrelevant, his defence was diminished responsibility.

@Sparklesocks

Yes, it makes no sense- 5 years is ridiculous.
Muskox · 18/02/2021 19:09

This is absolutely shocking Sad

littlepattilou · 18/02/2021 19:13

Agree. It's outrageous. I can't get my head round it. Why only 5 years? Confused

As a few people have said, 'stress through money worries?' Confused

MOST people have had that. What a shockingly poor excuse.
