Has anyone used a Ouija board?

Inspired by the tarrot cards thread.

I think I would let my children mess about with tarrot cards but I would always say no to ouija boards. Not sure why. Its the only thing I couldn't get peer pressured into as a teenager Hmm
I'm not woo (well not really woo) but I think that ouija boards would be a 'my house my rules' situation...

yABU ouija boards aren't really going to doom you
yanbu don't mess with that!!

My DD used one at her last birthday party and her and her friends loved scaring themselves. Its harmless fun.

biddybird · 18/02/2021 18:29

It's just a toy like any other.

WorraLiberty · 18/02/2021 18:33

Yes, in my mate's old dark cellar.

It was hilarious and a great night in 😃 Wine

UrAWizHarry · 18/02/2021 18:34

It's a toy made by the same people who make monopoly. Of course its not anything sinister.

malmi · 18/02/2021 18:36

As I posted on the other thread, it's a board game made by Hasbro and suitable for ages 8 and up:
shop.hasbro.com/en-us/product/ouija-game:86117134-5056-9047-F5E1-46EB2553A56A

Here's the instructions: www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/Ouija_Board_(2001).pdf

Any claims of woo or danger or spirits or ghosts or whatever are entirely unsubstantiated.

aLilNonnyMouse · 18/02/2021 18:40

It's a toy, nothing more nothing less. Sometimes it's fun to try and scare yourself with some friends. Nothing bad can actually happen.

snowblower · 18/02/2021 18:44

Yes, I used to play it most weekends with my cousins while our parents got drunk on home brew. It was a lot of fun. We had 2 cousins who really believed it, we used to spell out all kinds of nonsense.

FolkyFoxFace · 18/02/2021 18:50

My best friend and I used to scare ourselves silly with them when we were teenagers! I remember one time setting up my living room all seance-like, and inviting a group of our friends around. It was hilarious and scary - large amounts of wine definitely helped. Wine

I did it again in my early twenties, and for some reason that wasn't as fun. I don't think I was comfortable emotionally so it didn't feel the same, the people I did it with were very serious and a bit mean, and I did get properly scared... despite not being remotely religious or even woo at that point!

I wouldn't do it now, mainly because I've got an overactive imagination and the last time played on my mind for ages. 😂

Cpl1586407 · 18/02/2021 18:51

Yep it was our weekend activity as young teens not yet allowed to go to nightclubs!

Harmless really. It's literally a bit of card board and plastic

BSintolerant · 18/02/2021 18:53

The dead won’t harm you: people should be more frightened of the living!

BashfulClam · 18/02/2021 18:59

Nope, it can be more of a psychological thing that affects people if they really believe in it.

Ijustlikedthename · 18/02/2021 19:12

Meh, couldn't get worked up about it. We used to try it as kids in a graveyard that hadn't been used in over 100 years. Obviously nothing happened

grannyinapram · 18/02/2021 20:30

oh how disappointing! I was half hoping for some ghost stories Blush

I can't offer one but even now, I know people who go pale and shudder if you say the words ouija board. Then they win't say what happened.

One went to acting school so I don't take him too seriously but the others are genuinely frit.

PastaAndPizzaPlease · 18/02/2021 20:41

I’ve heard enough stories of people who’ve had scary experiences that I wouldn’t dare use one.

Zevia · 18/02/2021 20:54

I think they're absolute bollocks but I don't see them as a good or productive toy and people seem to be prone to traumatizing themselves with the things.

I'd consider letting DC play with one only if they first learned about how they've been entirely debunked.

Zevia · 18/02/2021 20:56

Hmm, now I'm less sure. Pretty sure we've had some demonic possessions playing Monopoly.

GeordieGreigsButtButtZoom · 18/02/2021 21:24

CovidLockdownmustend · 18/02/2021 21:54

It's not real. Nothing happens when you play with a board

I get VERY angry if I can't be the dog.

This.

Some people are gullible and easily scared so if that sort then avoid

janlevinson · 18/02/2021 22:02

Yes and it spelled out someone's name. Can't be sure it wasn't one of my friends but I know it wasn't me and there were only three of us playing. That left one person that I'm 50/50 on but she claimed to never have done it before..

AnnaFiveTowns · 18/02/2021 22:04

We used to use one when we were in our early teens. They do "work" in the sense that the glass moves but it is just everybody pushing it without thinking that they are; it's really weird because I honestly believe that not one of us was deliberately pushing the glass but collectively we did and it felt like a spirit. All bollocks of course - we asked it to predict who we would marry and guess what? It told each of us we'd marry our particular crush at that time - and none of us did in the end. They can be dangerous in the sense that if you believe it and it tells you something disturbing then it can cause issues. But I am absolutely convinced there is nothing supernatural about them.
