To expect beef encroute

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 17:49

To actually contain a piece of beef and not be some weird burger like patty which actually contains more pork than beef?

I bought this from Aldi it was nasty don't know what I expected tbh but not that!

Well I'm an outlier as farbas MN goes befUse I hate lidl akd aldi.

Now whereas an item should be as described obviously , expecting anything more was probably a tad naive.

Meat is expensive. If its cheap which aldi is there's a reason for it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 14/02/2021 17:53

Excuse typos Blush

Timeforabiscuit · 14/02/2021 17:55

That is crap :( - I'd complain, especially if it's not clear from the description.

steff13 · 14/02/2021 17:57

Aldi here in the US had a double your money back guarantee. Do they have that there? If so, I'd just get the refund.

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 17:59

@whatwouldscullydo it's more the fact that it's called beef encroute and actually contains mostly pork. Is that not odd?

@timeforabiscuit I'm not going to complain CBA but wanted to see what others thought as in would you expect an actual piece of beef or some sort of reformed patty?

BallsToYouSue · 14/02/2021 18:00

Gross! I refuse to buy Aldi meat since I read a thread here about their chicken 🤢

BallsToYouSue · 14/02/2021 18:01

And yanbu btw.

Whatwouldscullydo · 14/02/2021 18:02

My own judgement of the standards and quality of aldi it wouldn't surprise me .

But yes if you buy something called beef Wellington it should he as labelled.

What does the packet say. I bet there's sone really tiny writing that says reformed meat or something. Tiny writing no one looks at is how most supermarkets rip off /mislead their customers Angry

mootymoo · 14/02/2021 18:03

Look on the description/ingredients, if it says mince then that's what it is. I'm not sure what I would expect, beef Wellington is a piece of steak but en croute just means in pastry, we have salmon en croute in the oven, recipes vary

Alternista · 14/02/2021 18:05

There’s loads of reasons why someone might not want to eat pork, and if they’re buying something called beef, they should be able to trust that’s what it is!

Ylvamoon · 14/02/2021 18:05

I don't buy cheap meat anymore. All you pay for is water, fat and grizzle!

Honestly, buy from your local organic / farm shop if you can. And have 1-2 meat dishes a week.

It's still cheaper than supermarket meat every day ...

Crappyfridays7 · 14/02/2021 18:08

Sounds revolting just don’t buy it again. Salmon en croute from Tesco is lovely although a bit rich for me at the moment but it is so nice. I like beef but don’t really eat it much so not something I would choose. I’d just never buy it again and move on

I did shop @ Aldi for a while as it is cheaper but I don’t like it. There’s stuff I get from other supermarkets I can’t get and I can’t be bothered going to 2 places & the quality just isn’t always there, it’s cheaper to shop carefully elsewhere for me tbh.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 14/02/2021 18:10

What do the ingredients say?

AlwaysLatte · 14/02/2021 18:12

YANBU. Didn't it say on on the box, though?

tttigress · 14/02/2021 18:13

Could be be hitting peak Lidl/Aldi?

I do occasionally shop at Lidl, but as stated, you can't get everything there, so you have to do 2 supermarket shops per week which is a pain (depending non how much time you have)

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:13

It was definitely my fault for not reading the ingredients but still if something says need you would expect beef to be the main ingredient. Oddly there is no image available on Aldi website but the description is and there's no mention of pork until you find the ingredients list

But it says chorizo beef - chorizo is pork Confused

missrm · 14/02/2021 18:15

Hahaha what do you think chorizo is made from?

dancingbymyself · 14/02/2021 18:16

Oh please do complain Grin

BergamotMouse · 14/02/2021 18:17

Chorizo is pork?

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:17

Haha I know but the chorizo was in cubes on top the pork was minced in a patty

OP posts:
SpiderinaWingMirror · 14/02/2021 18:18

Lol.
I'd expect the main ingredients to be tomato and chorizo. There are strict rules about how things should be described and Aldi are masters of it

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:19

My AIBU wasn't that it contai ed pork, it was that it's called beef encroute and it contains more pork than beef also (probably wrongly) I expected a piece of beef not a burger. The chorizo was diced on top.

OP posts:
sunflowersandbuttercups · 14/02/2021 18:23

Sorry, but I really don't think you have grounds to complain here! The ingredients even say Pork (18%) and Beef (13%).

The description also says: Legal name Minced pork and beef topped with a cheese and tomato melt sprinkled with chorizo and mozzarella cheese topping encased in puff pastry.

happystrummer · 14/02/2021 18:23

lol thats not beef en croute ..there is more pork then beef in it. Pork (19%), Beef (13%), Its also got a load of cheese in it. It would be better described as Mush En Croute.... Anyway looks like Aldi were looking into it as they have had a complaint about it already :)
