To expect beef encroute

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 17:49

To actually contain a piece of beef and not be some weird burger like patty which actually contains more pork than beef?

I bought this from Aldi it was nasty don't know what I expected tbh but not that!

Just don’t buy it again, problem solved Hmm

Veterinari · 14/02/2021 18:24

@rabbitheadlights

My AIBU wasn't that it contai ed pork, it was that it's called beef encroute and it contains more pork than beef also (probably wrongly) I expected a piece of beef not a burger. The chorizo was diced on top.
It's not called beef en croute though

It's called tomato and chorizo beef en croute.

The tomato and chorizo are first and therefore tomato and pork would be the main ingredients.

Not Aldi's fault that you misread a clear description.

Weedsnseeds1 · 14/02/2021 18:25

Legal name i.e. the description that appears directly below the title name of the product "minced pork and beef, topped with a cheese and tomato melt, topped with chorizo and mozzarella, encased in puff pastry"
It clearly states on the front face of the pack what it is!

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:27

@sunflowersandbuttercups I have no intention of complaining I said up thread it was my fault for not reading the ingredients, however wanted to know what other posters would expect from beef encroute in terms of piece of meat or burger patty, I wish I could get an image of the packaging but I can't fi d one online, but there is no suggestion of pork (aside from the chorizo diced on top)

OP posts:
SarahBellam · 14/02/2021 18:30

So it’s a fancy sausage roll?

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:31

@Weedsnseeds1 if I could find an image of the packaging you would see that is not the case it says BEEF encroute and the tomato etc is in small writing

But it's not called beef en croute Confused

Your expectations are off simply because you didn't read the packet properly.

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:33

It's disgusting one of the worst things I've ever eaten @sarahBellam that's what it is! Haha that'll teach me for being lazy.

Starting to worry about the Aldi chicken en croute that husband is currently cooking for tea!

cardibach · 14/02/2021 18:35

Aldi Salmon en croute is delicious and definitely a chunk of salmon.

DavidsSchitt · 14/02/2021 18:36

It literally lists the pork before the beef 😂

muddyford · 14/02/2021 18:37

I bought the equivalent thing in Lidl. It was actually beef but mostly gristle. I won't be buying it again. But the salmon Wellington is first class!

TitusPullo · 14/02/2021 18:38

I think you’ve confused Beef en croute and beef Wellington. I’d not expect beef encroute to not be minced.

WineInTheWillows · 14/02/2021 18:43

I reckon PP hit the nail on the head here- it's the difference between 'wellington' and 'en croute'.

DavidsSchitt · 14/02/2021 18:46

Ooh yeah. OP, you were expecting a Wellington!

userxx · 14/02/2021 18:52

The beef Wellington in Aldi looked nice, wish I'd grabbed it now.

12frogsincoats · 14/02/2021 18:56

I had this from Aldi recently! It's awful!

RubyFakeLips · 14/02/2021 18:57

I wouldn’t buy processed meat from Aldi, but I do agree with you actually, that I would expect this to be tomato, chorizo and beef.

I don’t eat pork, if I envisage a scenario where a friend unwittingly served this I’d assume from the title I just needed to fish the chorizo out, I would not have thought it would contained minced pork or minced beef for that matter.

But ‘Cheese analogue’ also blew my mind....

rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 18:57

@sunflowersandbuttercups it is called Beef encroute and if I could show you the packaging you would see, maybe there is a reason the image has been removed from Aldi website

OP posts:
rabbitheadlights · 14/02/2021 19:00

@12frogsincoats did you expect a burger and did the packing lead you to believe that beef was the main Ingredient? I'm contemplating making an unnecessary journey to Aldi just so I can take a picture of the pack to show you all

OP posts:
CottonSock · 14/02/2021 19:03

Dh had a Tesco one and it was the same. Like a burger wrapped in pastry. It did get better once cooked more (he had two).

orangenasturtium · 14/02/2021 19:06

I am with you, OP.

I would expect beef en croute to be a slice of beef, not a burger, but I would probably blame myself for not reading the packet.

However, I would be mightily miffed to find that the main constituent of that patty was pork, not beef. That will taste totally different, like Ikea meatballs. The law for a "beef" burger is that it must contain at least 62% beef. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a law that would cover this...

12frogsincoats · 14/02/2021 19:07

I was expecting proper beef, but to be honest I didn't take too close a look at the ingredients.

AndreaMartelsCoat · 14/02/2021 19:09

We had these recently, note I didn't buy them dh did. God they're an abomination, truly revolting and as much as I detest food waste, these were slung in the food waste bin.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 14/02/2021 19:09

I don’t think you should have to read the list of ingredients to see what’s actually in it, not if it’s labelled Beef En Croute.
Given that label I’d expect a piece of beef, not a mix.
